Haircolor too dark? Here are your options!
Halloween is over. Time to pick up your pumpkin and go home.
“Hairstyle too Dark?”
If you dressed up as Mortisha this year and dyed your hair blue-black, you may be realizing it’s not the easiest haircolor to wear, or, to get out of your hair.
It’s not an uncommon mistake to get your haircolor too dark, but it is a mistake that’s tricky to fix, especially for non-professionals. I can’t tell you how many of these types of hair color disasters I’ve seen and been asked to fix over the years. It can be the hardest hair color correction to handle.
Many times, hair color correction requires multiple steps, bleaching out the old hair color and then adding back the base hair colors that make up the shade you want. The basic principal theory of color applies here, if you at all confused about what artisitic colors mix to make other colors, don’t take it into your own hands. It takes a trained colorist to understand how to get you there with the least amount of added hair damage. There is high potential for major catastrophes here. Here are two recent comments on my blog to support my point.

Hi, I dyed my hair jet black over a year ago. I want to lighten my hair to a nice light brown and put blonde highlights in it. My hair is course, curly and extremely frizzy. When i used to dye my hair it never took. I don’t want to go to a salon because i have a beauty store by my house that sell the same products. Is there a way i can strip my hair and get rid of the jet black dye? what should i do? i don’t want to mess it up because my hair gets dry easily. Should i bleach it? please help me
thanks
Comment by Melinda — September 22, 2005 @ 2:34 pm | Edit This
this comment is towards Melinda??I have the EXACT same problem, I bleached my hair blonde and my hair is naturally dark brown with subtle red highlights (in the sun) the colour turned out to look freakishly orange and to cover up the embarrassment and colour I dyed it blue black. But the colour looks to drastic with my warm brown skin. I look pale and scary. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although my best advice is to have a professional colorist fix this kind of problem, I know many of you don’t have the money to invest in a hair color correction service. Here is an option I teach in my online class, Finding the Right Hairstyle for You! just keep in mind it also will dry hair, so if you choose to do this, follow the directions.
How can I undo a haircolor? — The chemical process of undoing a hair color treatment, and then getting the hair color you desire, requires an experienced hair colorist to get it right. There are different solutions depending on what hair color your trying to correct, what chemical processes are already on your hair, and how much more abuse your hair can take.
L’Oreal, Revlon, and Clairol all have consumer hotlines that take thousands of calls a year from customers who didn’t get the haircolor they were hoping for. Do you know what they all have in common? When asked if they did a strand test, the overwhelming response was “No.” Why? The excuses are similar, “didn’t have the time,” “didn’t want to cut off some of my hair,” “didn’t think it was really necessary.”
Clairol — 800-223-5800
L’Oreal — 800-631-7358
Revlon — 800-4Revlon
You can try the hotline, but beware and think twice before trying hair color correction at home. A better bet here would be a consultation with your hair dresser. If they are specialized at hair coloring, great, otherwise let them refer you to someone who is.You may be able to get close to the original hair color you intended, but not without spending some more time, more money and possibly doing irreparable hair damage.
All of that being said, and you still want to try a home remedy to lighten some hair color, here are your options:
- Use a clarifying shampoo
- Metalex by Clairol
— A product that claims to remove problem overtones that occur from hair colors that have deposited too much ash, red, copper, or lavender. It contains sulphonated oil, which supposedly does the stripping. The product only works for temporary hair dyes, not permanent hair dyes. You can find this hair care product and many other specialty hair care products at your local Beauty Mart or my favorite Folica.
- Soap-bleach shampoo cocktail — The most effective, and will be the most challenging to use. To lift out hair color, combine one packet of bleach powder to two ounces of shampoo. You can add some water for longer hair. Mix it up and shampoo into your hair. WATCH CLOSELY for the hair turning lighter as the old hair color leaves. Wash it out when the hair color has lifted out. It’s better to wash it out early as you can redo this step as often as needed. Now you can apply a level two hair color that you wanted in the first place.

Skip all of this and search dilligently and carefully for a stylist in your area that is familiar with using color correctors like elimin8 from rusk or modulat from schwarzkopf. These are tricky and need to be used by an expert correctionist. However, with the right know how they can truly remove dark dye pigments on damaged/unruly hair and leave it ready for corrective/dimensional color applications. Search for a colorist that seems to understand the judgement necessary to achieve your desired color, not just one who understands how to remove pigment with these tools. Also pick a colorist in a location that you will be comfortable with for 4 to 5 hours as it may take that long to go back from black!!!

Hello, only about 2-3 weeks ago i dyed my hair black and then 3 days after dying it i got my aunt to perm it but the perm did NOT work out and now my hair is dry, frizzy, damaged and BLACK. How can i get my color and perm out so my hair can go back to its normal way? please help me!!!
Comment by alysha — November 18, 2005 @ 3:03 am
Hello Alysha,
I wish I had a magic fix for you, but the truth is I don’t. You really need a professional to look at your hair at this point. They can assess by seeing your hair if the damage is reversable or not. As Markus commented above, if they assess that it is reversable, it will end up costing alot because of the time involved. You can get a consultation for free, and maybe they will see another option for you. Good Luck,
Barb

I have natural brown hair. Around a year ago i had some ‘blonde’ highlights put in. I had them topped up a few times until it got to the point where my hair looked grey. I am only 13 so decided to dye a very light subtle shade of bown close to my own shade. Now it looks absoulutly awful and i dont know what to do. Instead of going ‘golden brown’ its has bright orange roots and dull brown and grey lenghts i think i to go to the hair dressers and ask them to do it but i dont have any money :’(
Please help

I had too many different shades of browns in my hair from auburn underneath to almost black on the sides. It looked terrible. So I went to the store and bought a product that removes all dye from colored hair, and started over with a new shade. It worked great. My hair did look horribly dry after I got thru stripping it of dye, but after I applied the new permanent hair color and conditioned it, it looks and feels great. Very shiny and soft. And it looks very natural.
I’ve been coloring my hair for years, I use mostly demi-perms, the last 2 times I used permanent dyes which were too dark compared to the rest of my hair. So I applied the hair color remover, and then I recolored my hair with a medium brown and worked it in thoroughly through all of hair. My hair looks great now and very natural. I realized the key to not screwing up hair is make sure you pick a natural looking shade and stick to that shade if you are doing touchups. Otherwise if you keep trying different shades you end up w/ neopolitan halloween hair. I also firmly believe that unless you have alot of experience, do not attempt to highlight your hair by yourself. Highlighting is very detailed coloring and I’ve never seen a home job done nicely. Go to a pro if you want natural looking highlights. I’ve been coloring my hair for years at home and learned by mistakes and experience, but if you are new to coloring, start with a semi-permant, then work your way up to demi-perm and then permanents if you really are careful. If you already have very damaged, dry and brittle hair then do not use the hair color remover. That stuff is pure chemical. My hair handled it well because my hair was in pretty good condition still since I have mostsly used demi-perms and not permanents. I would definitely go to a pro if your hair is already pretty damaged.

I’d love to ask Corrine what product she used to strip her hair also. I really would love to get rid of the blah reddish brown I have.
My bigger problem, tho, is that my natural hair color is white!

I recently got highlights using the foil method, I chose a medium golden brown color, it turned out looking copper, why is this? also I had a semi-permanent color a year ago, the top part of my hair got the copper tone but the ends remained dark, what do I have to do in order for the color to get to the ends?

Comment by kristyn — March 25, 2006 @ 7:48 am
I have some advice for anyone who hates their hair colour - do not bleach it. Don’t use bleach, bleach powder, anything with the word bleach in it, especially if your hair is already even slightly damaged.
I’ve had a few mess ups, heres an example… my friend bleached the front of my hair, it completely disintegrated. As in it turned to jelly and just started falling off any time I touched it.. I had to go to the hairdresser and she put in 3 treatments and cut a lot of it off, it was short, dry, brittle, breaking off, disgusting. I couldn’t straighten it or anything.. it’s taken 5 months for it to grow back to a decent length. I also bleached my tips to put blue into them, the blue didn’t really last. It was kind of pointless.
I’m now saving up for a trip to the salon to get it totally redone. I have about 3cm of regrowth, I have ash blonde hair dyed black and I’m sick of black, it usually fades to brown anyway.
A good way to get dye out of hair that I’ve been doing is to use anti dandruff shampoo. It probably won’t get it back to your natural colour if it’s light, but it slowly takes the dye out every time without hurting the hair or damaging it. PLEASE please please don’t make a mistake like I did - it’s un fixable, if you HAVE to bleach your hair, go to a professional!!

I have some gray, but original color is very dark brown, and have been using some brown with auburn tones or burgundies to cover gray. The results have been pretty good, but I decided to “go conservative” and tried a medium brown — the results were almost black! Someone told me this is because my natural color is very dark brown almost black. Now, I need to lighten, but what can I use that won’t damage my hair? I want to cover gray, but get away from overdark harsh look.

I have medium-dark brown hair and I have been dying it black for about 1 year, but for the last 4-5 months I havent touched it, so I want to dye it now to medium brown but Im scared that it will look horrible! I bought the L’oreal Couleur Experte to do my own color and highlights.. in the span of the 4-5 months of no color should my hair be ok to redye to a lighter color?

Hi, I made a mistake with my hair and need help.
About two months ago, I dyed my hair a deep redish-brown, using a temporary dye. I immediately had regrets, as my natural hair had finally all grown back, and looked ok. On the box, it said that it would fade out after 24 washes, however, it did not. I’ve tried using anti-dandruff shampoo to get it to fade faster, and I managed to get it to a light, coppery red… that was about a month ago. I’m still washing my hair every day, and it still won’t let up. I don’t have money to go to a stylist, what can I do at home without damaging my hair?
Please give me some advice..Thank you for your time.

My hair is light to med. brown and a couple of days ago I used Loreal Coloure Experte to try to darken my hair and get a different look. It was suppose to be dark brown with dark mahogany highlights. Instead my hair turned blood red with bright orange highlights. The Loreal people told me to color my hair with dark brown in 24 hours. My hair turned BLACK with red, purple and orange undertones! I took it upon myself to put an ash brown color over this to kill the red tones. It only helped slightly. Can anyone give me advice? Until I get a fix I’m wearing a hat!

I have naturally dark blonde hair and I really wanted to dye it light brown which would be like one shad darker then my natural colour. I went to a salon and it turned dark dark brown with a bit of red. It has lightend up a lot but NOW its turned to red for my liking. The people said they’ll have to strip it to egt it back to my natural colour because I REALLY WANT IT BLONDE AGAIN!! I am just wondering if i get it stripped and died back will it fall our and break. I am only 14 and my hair is in very good condition right now and I don’t straighten it or blow dry it anymore because if I strip it I want it to be really healthy still. What should I do:(:(:(:(:(
Comment by Allie — April 20, 2006 @ 10:17 am
Andrea,
Your problem now is you have two colors to deal with…your roots and the rest. My best suggestion is go to a cosmotology school, have them diagnose what you need. You can choose for them to fix it, ( which I would) or they could suggest what to use. But, you will need to do roots and the rest, which would be v.hard for you to formulate and put on correctly.
Good luck
Comment by Barb — April 20, 2006 @ 11:31 am
Claudia,
Go to a professional, hands on, to fix this. Anything more you would do will only make this worse. Write down all colors that are on your hair now, to tell the colorist.
Also, see about this sooner than later, so you don’t have roots to blend also.
Good Luck
Comment by Barb — April 20, 2006 @ 11:38 am
Allie,
Sounds like the colorist didn’t get it right. Not sure I would want to trust them with stripping and dying back.
Clarifying shampoos will help to lighten also. Maybe you could use that and then a rinse to tone the red down—someone needs to see you to asses that. That would be easiest on your hair. If you have roots, you need two formulas, one for the roots and one for the rest.
Because your hair is healthy, it would hold up to a lift and tone back, done correctly.

Please see a professional if you want to correct your hair color. I recommend going to a cosmetology school. I’m a cosmetology student, and I can promise you that the results you will get from the school will be way better than any result you can achieve on your own. It won’t be a $7.00 box of dye, but it won’t be $100+ hair service either. I did two color corrections last week alone, and both cost less than $20.00. Trust me, I’ve done the whole strip the hair color myself, and had to walk around like a tennis ball for a month.

yeah i just currently tried to turn black hair into light ash brown. and it was a complete disaster. I overprocessed it and still wound up with a brown with brassy and coppertones. Its not awful, but after so many processes, it’s still not the colot I want it to be. Not to mention, my hair came out rough and straw-like. I wish there swas something i could do to reverse the damage I’ve done!!
Comment by Amanda — July 30, 2006 @ 2:00 am
To Amanda with overprocessed hair,
All may not be as bad as you think. But timing is important that you do something sooner than later when you will have roots to deal with as well as the rest of your hair.
Sounds like the brassiness could be toned down with the right shade to cover.
Two important things though, have a professional look at it and either do it or give you a suggestion of what color you need to use. (Go to a beauty school if money is an issue)
Also, do deep conditioning treatments as much as needed to get it in better shape.
Good Luck

hey there, (im hoping someone can help!!!!!!!!!!!) =)
alright, this is how the albert einstein works with me. so i HAD platinum blonde hair, just a week ago… and i always do my roots in the loreal ultra light ash blonde for touch ups, and i decided to run the whole thing through my hair, not even for long, and it turned my hair sky blue. SO, then i was told (not by professional) to use a natural light blonde to get rid of it, and i used that, and it got rid of most of it. and THEN, it was pretty back to platinum blonde, ACCEPT for the fact there was still a bit of blue, and mostly grey in it. so for the last thing i did, and was ALSO told, was to add a medium beige tone to it, so that i could re-bleech it and it would go back. so i added the medium beige to my hair, and now it is awfully grey at the ends, and i am walking around looking like albert einstein. i am really sc ared to do anything to it, and i would like some advice on what to do. i dont know what to do now, and i am a heartbroken albert einstein. if someone can please help me out, it would be super great…. thankyou for taking the time. xxxooo
lots of love.

hello!
well, it’s september now and in march i decided to dye my hair black.
now my hair is naturally dark brown and it’s quite absorbent, so it took on the permanent dye quite well.
problem is, now i don’t want black hair anymore=/
i want a mid to dark brown!
so i went to my hairdresser and he’s done the first step of bleaching bits of my hair and he’s told me to come back in 6 weeks for the next step.
second problem is i’m rather impatient and was wondering if in the meantime there were any subtle things i could do to get some of the excess dye out of my hair.
i’m tempted to dye it, but i won’t because that would complicate the process, but is there any home-made or products i could buy to gently lighten it?
x
Comment by Kathleen — September 5, 2006 @ 1:43 am
Hi Kathleen,
You are right to have a colorist working with you. He is taking a good route by lightening pieces at a time, a sublte and gentle way of working with your porous hair.
Another subtle thing you can try meanwhile is to use a clarifying shampoo 3 to 5 times a week. Just be sure to condition after every application as it will otherwise dry out your hair. A deep conditioner would be good to use too as needed.
Good Luck,
Barb

I dyed my hair jet black about 2 months ago. I now want to dye it to red. My natural hair color is a dark blonde to almost brown. How should I start this process? Thanks!

Yesterday I dyed my hair black and it was horrible. I bought a med brown dye and it did not lighten my hair. There is a comment at the top of this page that was INCREDIBLE!!!! You do not have to go to a salon. They will ruin your hair by stripping it. I took the advice of one the commentators which sd to mix bleach powder and shampoo, but I added 2.5oz of 30 developer and applied it. I watched my hair lift and in about 15 min my hair was a beautiful chestnut brown with red highlights. It works!!!!!!

i have a similar problem to these but its a little different. I want to dye my hair a dark blonde(almost brown) but I dyed my hair (about 2 months ago) black after dying it with bright reds. The black is still there, but patches of it have faded away, revieling sed undernieth. Since then i have inches of roots that have grown out. I want to try bleaching it, and adding the caramely shade, but im not sure if it will turn my hair too orange/ turn the red blotches and roots even brighter.

I’m a hairstylist, but I work in a single chair salon by myself. I’ve been dying my hair a level 1 black semi perm w/ 5 vol for deposit only (L’Oreal Richess) for 4 years in anticipation of eventually going back to something lighter (my natural is a level 5 auburn).
I know that color over color goes darker and though I’m using a red, not blue based black and ONLY a 5 vol peroxide, I still anticipate a bit of trouble getting out the black.
I’m about 30% grey, moreso on top and at temples, and I’m wondering if I should do a color remover (never was trained with this type of product in the 80’s) or just try to bleach to lighten.
Since I only need to lift 2-3 levels, and the color I’m going for will still be very red, I’d love some advice as to how to tackle this lightening job.
I live in SF and corrective color starts at $400 which I can’t afford.

Question over a color correction job I received at a salon. I went in with platinum blonde hair, with areas of canary yellow and some red, from a previous stylist that used bleach on me. I am a natural brunette. I went to have a color correction done to another stylist. I had one inch of growth at roots, of my natural dark brown hair. She bleached my roots, and then ran a different formula of a gentler bleach through my ends, to get the color uniform. Then was going to apply a tint, in the blonde shade of my choice. I told her I have SERIOUS red undertones in my hair, and in the past have used an ash blonde, to get the desired shade with NO problem. She told me the ash would make it look gray, and suggested a honey blonde, with warm undertones. I told her I worried about the red undertones, as I have hypersensitivity with pulling red, even when my hair is bleached platinum. She assured me it would be okay. I trusted her, she used the honey blonde, and my hair turned MAROON!! This is a professional, mind you. I told her no, I came in for BLONDE hair, and came in with BLONDE hair, with dark roots. She said well, we can apply ash, and hope that it will counter the red. I told her fine, that that is what should have been done in the first place, I KNOW my hair. Well, the ash helped, but I left the salon with a mahogony/brown hair, (which was better than maroon) but I didn’t go in for THAT shade. I told her I still wanted blonde, she said it will be a long time, before I can go back to blonde. For some reason I felt guilty, (as I was at the salong for 5 hours) and paid my $ 200.00 bill. She said she didn’t charge me for the color job that turned me maroon. But I should have never turned maroon in the first place. I am confused how to handle this. This stylist cuts my hair well, and I don’t want to sever the relationship, but I feel she was inexperienced with the color, and I should not have had to pay for the supposed “color correction” that left me dark mahogany brown, which I did NOT go in for. Please advice on how to handle this. I’m very upset. I have sank nothing but $$$ in to my hair the last two years, to keep it blonde, and now, here I am a mahogany brunette, and I didn’t ask for it. Thank you for your advice.
Comment by Cyndi — August 5, 2007 @ 3:14 pm
Comment for REGINA. I wouldn’t worry about the ash brown, Regina, since your virgin hair is DARK, to start out with. I have “heard” that it is platinum blonde hair, that will take on a greenish, or purplish, or grayish, tint, although I have never had that problem, either. If your hair has red undertones, you definitely want to stay away from reddish based brown, (auburns, etc.) UNLESS you want lighter brown hair, with red. I would definitely go with ash, to counter any natural red in your hair. Since your hair is dark, and you are only going a shade or two, to a lighter ash brown, I think you would be fine. You can call the number on the box of the hair dye, to be sure. Although in my opinion, they will probably direct you to something with reddish undertones, which I would personally, avoid. I’d go with the ash, if your hair has been previously unprocessed.

i dyed my hair dark brown.
&nd you know what? it turned black.
i spent almost a half a year obsessing over my hair. i tried everything to get it out. baking soda, mustard, bleach, stripping it, and dishsoap.
i pretty much ruined my hair.
finally, almost befor it was too late, my mom showed me what i was doing to my hair. colored or not, you cant mess with it as bad as i did.
its been almost 2 months since iv dont anything to it, and to tell you the truth, it looks ok. not my natrual of course, but i can live with it.
it hasnt fully recorvered yet.
so please, please, please. think twice before you do anything to it. please.

Hi, I have a color corrector, Rusk Elimin8 ID. Now, I have used this before under the direction of my stylist and she has used it on my hair to try and re-lighten it. It hasn’t had much effect on my hair. I would like to try it one last time, but have misplaced the directions. Do you know how to mix it?

Amera,
Your answer is easy . . . DON’T TRY IT!!!
You should be scared, your brain is trying to tell you something here. Your dilemma is even a tough one for a colorist to do, but the good news is an experienced colorist can get you evened out!
Good Luck!

Okay, I went to JcPenny’s and asked for Blond highlights, and the bottom to be dark brown all over, then the lady started talking about adding some red to the brown I said Okay! BIG MISTAKE, I think my hair was purple, are marroon. So.. I went back for a color correction, the girl said it looked fine…but she added a darker color and more highlight! My hair is no color that I have ever seen on anyone! Everyone keeps asking so,…what color is that? HELP! Is their anyway to fix this at home! I have already spent all my $

Rob,
JCPenney’s salon has a v.good reputation. I am quite sure if you call the salon and talk with the manager, they will make this right.
Two things about this stylist/colorist who worked on your hair . . . she’s not as experienced as she would like to think she is AND she doesn’t understand customer satisfaction.
The manager will give you their top rated, most experienced colorist to do the color correction . . . on their dime.
Don’t try anything at home . . . believe me it can get worse!
Good Luck . . . let us know!

HI, I my eyebrows are very blonde and I had them tinted brown,I thought they were ok but got home and now I believe that they are too dark. How do I lighten them?
Comment by Fran — May 15, 2009 @ 11:17 am
Hi Fran,
Try washing your eyebrows with Prell shampoo a few times! Prell shampoo should strip some color from your brows, just be careful of your eyes!

I was reading about the home remedy #3.
What kind of powder bleach? Something I need to buy at a Beauty Supply?
