Carly Fiorina, the next California senator?
Filed under: Economy, People, Media, Hewlett-Packard
Good thing former Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) CEO Carly Fiorina is running to be California's next U.S. senator. She wouldn't stand a chance at getting elected queen of Wall Street.
Fiorina, once considered one of the most powerful women in business, has heard the siren call of public service. Last week, the Republican filed paperwork with the IRS that will allow her to begin raising money for what likely will be one of most expensive senate races ever -- if not the most expensive. A spokeswoman for Fiorina declined to comment.
"If Carly Fiorina enters the race and becomes the Republican nominee, the voters will have a very clear choice between a senator who has spent decades fighting and winning for the people of California and someone described by many as one of the worst CEOs in America," said Rose Kapolczynski, Senator Boxer's campaign manager, in a statement.
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Eric Schultz goes further, arguing in a press release, "This is a person who was fired from Hewlett-Packard for running the company into the ground [and] fired from the McCain Presidential Campaign for incompetence."
This is all true, of course, along with the outrageous $21 million severance package Fiorina was awarded by H-P's board. Not bad for causing the tech company's stock to tank following the disastrous merger with Compaq, no? Fiorina also feuded with the McCain campaign about its choice of Sarah Palin as a running-mate, although that could be a plus among California's voters.
But Democrats can't afford to snicker too long. Of the state's two senators, Boxer is the less popular. Dianne Feinstein, California's other senator, is seen as a more centrist politician than Boxer, according to political scientists. Despite its liberal reputation, California is a moderate state for the most part.
Daniel Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California, told the DailyFinance that Fiorina may be the most formidable opponent Boxer has ever faced. Indeed, Fiorina's access to considerable sums of money probably concerns Boxer, according to Jennifer Duffy, senior editor Cook Political Report.
Poll numbers don't exactly indicate that Boxer is a shoe-in. The Los Angeles Times reported that a March poll found voters evenly split on her re-election. However, a hypothetical match-up with Fiorina shows Boxer trouncing the former executive 55 percent to 25 percent, the paper said. Both candidates should easily beat their primary opponents.
With president Obama's popularity plunging and California's finances in a disastrous state, voters are fed-up with politicians of all sorts. If times get much worse, they may be willing to give someone new a chance -- even if their tenure at their old job left plenty to be desired.

Barney the children's dinosaur would be a step up from Barbara Boxer. She has done such a great job in the senate and it has wonderous effects on the California economy??? She sides with crazies in San Fran becoming a sanctuary city while hospitals close in Ca. due to free healtchcare given to the illegals. While your article talks about the down fall of Carly (she was not "FIRED" she stepped down as CEO) she did perform a few times prior to becoming Hewlett's CEO (sr. VP at ATT and Lucent/ Board of Directors at MIT) and she did oversee the takeover of thier largets rival. She did make some mistakes (pretty big) but Boxer's resume lists stockbroker and has NEVER run a company so we will never know her true failure rate. Time to stop the spin and start reporting a true story with some facts not just quotes (that are inaccurate in content) and opinions. If you need help with that let me know.

Carly left on her own? Don't you just love right wing mythology? LOL LOL LOL
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Hewlett-Packard Co. Chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina, one of the most powerful women in corporate America, is leaving the troubled computer maker after being forced out by the company's board.
Shares of HP (Research) jumped 6.9 percent in heavy trading on the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday on the news. But at one point, the stock was up as much as 10.5 percent.
"The stock is up a bit on the fact that nobody liked Carly's leadership all that much," said Robert Cihra, an analyst with Fulcrum Global Partners. "The Street had lost all faith in her and the market's hope is that anyone will be better."
Fiorina, the only female CEO at a company in the Dow Jones industrial average, had been with HP since 1999. But the company's controversial deal to buy Compaq in the spring of 2002 -- after a bruising proxy fight led by one of the Hewlett family heirs -- has not produced the shareholder returns or profits she had promised.
"While I regret the board and I have differences about how to execute HP's strategy, I respect their decision," Fiorina said in a statement released by the company.

It's really funny when someone posts a comment to an accurate story that is full of lies and then offers to help others with the facts. That cretin credits Carly with the takeover of HP biggest rival which is exactly what got HP in trouble when she couldn't integrate both companies profitably.
One more thing, I make it a practice not to take advise about facts from someone who can't even spell "their" correctly and who specializes in fictional accounts of history.

Carly's record of failure in the private sector reminds me of the private sector failures of G W Bush. Maybe she can be as effective a Senator as he was as a President ROTFLMAO.
I love this line:
"The Street had lost all faith in her and the market's hope is that anyone will be better."
Anyone would be better

All she has to do is run as a democrat and she will be welcomed with open arms. She will be sitting (if elected as a democrat) with scores of failed CEOs, adulterers, tax cheats, serial sexual predators, sexual deviants, etc. Hey Obie hired two failed CEOs (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) for his campaign staff.
And you have to laugh at the comment from the Boxer camp, so "spent decades fighting and winning for the people of California " spoken like the POLITICIAN she is and not a stateman. She spent decades getting votes to stay in office so she didnt have to get a real job. Not unlike teddy "brain" kennedy after he allowed his sexual partner to die a slow drowning death in a lake. Look and see what California is like now. They promote allowing non citizens to be "citizens". They promote "free" education at the cost of anyone who makes money. They promote stringent environmental laws while whining that they are not getting enough industry for jobs.... Boxer, Feinstein...both are out dated dinosaurs (like teddy, barney, harry, hilliary and obie) that need to simply go to their retirement mansions, stop taking tax payer money and start spending their own money.

I don't see anything major that would prevent her from running. Voters can hear her views and make a choice. The criticism of her to date sounds like nit-picking.

Not fair of you to pick the spelling of one side of the argument. Chaz had a misspelling also but because he had your view, you chose to only criticize Pat. We all type fast and make errors. Be fair when you criticize; not one-sided.

Boxer is a Socialist and continues to win because of her connection to the liberal money machine and the poor choice of alternatives. There are many Californians who cannot stand the woman. Her being in the Senate will cost all Americans dearly if she gets her way.
I was not happy to see Fiorina stepping in. I guess she saw ebay's Meg Whitman running for governor (actually, Meg is an excellent candidate for governor) and came in as a "me too". Fiorina has too much baggage.
Darrell Issa would be a much better choice to go against Boxer.

I've been listening to ignorant and uninformed right wing extremists call Democrats socialists, commies and marxists for almost 60 years. They have no idea what those terms mean but because of their need to lie and scare people all the time, those are the easiest and most reliable lies they can come up with. As far as I'm concerned it's just a quick way to spot an extremist cretin. I love it when they call George Soros, one of the most successful capitalists/hedge fund managers in history, a socialist or commie.
Like all good Socialists Senator Boxer started her career on Wall Street as a broker, an obvious training ground for Socialists :)

At least Carly Fiorina has had some actual business success and has managed something for real. Boxer is nothing but a perennial, liberal only, for good or ill, politician who has never spent any time in the real world at all. She needs to go. She has been in too long. Anybody would be better than Boxer.

Carly had absolutely no business success and has the interpersonal relationship skills of a dead skunk. I will always remember her comment to the thousands of employees she laid off "Get over it, the company doesn't owe you a job". Compassionate Conservatism at its finest!

Yeah, except didn't she get canned at HP for being inept, and she was behind the "spying on employees" fiasco?

A candidate that doesn't think American workers are entitled to have jobs going to run against Boxer - that's going to be a hoot. I'm surprised that between Boxer and Feinstein, Boxer is the least favorite; because, I followed a couple of bills and issues and not once have I seen Boxer vote against the average man, and I can't say that for Feinstein. This ought to be intersting.

Carly Fiorina turned HP into a Walmart for computers. Reselling Apple Ipods under an HP logo. I bought HP stock, because at the time this company was full of innovators. There logo "Invent" meant something. When Carly took over, the stock dropped in half, HP was not creative, and she walked away with 60 million dollars on the Compaq deal. The best thing to happen to HP was when she was forced out. Is this what you want in your government. Another moron!

Whatever her accomplishments, or lack thereof a change from liberal democrats in California may still save them. Ummmmm- probably not. They are too far gone. CA really should be set adrift before it ruins the rest of the country.

Carly Fiorina couldn't win a seat on the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Darrell Issa and Michael Huffington found out what happens when a Republican tries to buy a California Senate seat. Save your money Carley or move to Wyoming and run.

Carly Fiorina would be a GIANT leap for the people of California. Barbara Boxer has done nothing during her reign in the Senate. She has allowed more jobs to leave California than any one person I can think of.
Don't ever believe that statement from Boxers staff. What do they know about business? Nothing. Fiorina was great for H-P and with her REAL experience in business she knows best how to get this economy rolling and bring business and jobs back to California.
