Two firefighters die in Buffalo, N.Y., after plunging through the collapsed first floor of a burning building. Officials say Lt. Charles McCarthy, a 22-year veteran of the department, was searching for a person reported trapped in the building. Firefighter Jonathan Croom was killed trying to get to McCarthy.

'Last Column' Back at 9/11 Site
A steel beam from the original World Trade Center in New York was returned to the site Monday. Dubbed the "Last Column," it became the final standing steel column removed from the site of the Sept. 11 attacks. It will become part of the planned National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum.

Schools Urged to Prepare for Swine Flu

Schools throughout the country are being advised to prepare for possible swine flu cases by creating hard-copy packets and online classes that will keep students learning even if they become sick with the illness. "As the school year begins, I'm concerned that the H1N1 virus might disrupt learning in some schools across the country," Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says.

At least 1,200 veterans around the country are told they have a fatal neurological disease -- but it's all a mistake. A Gulf War veterans group says many vets are panicking after being informed they have Lou Gehrig's disease. The group says the Department of Veterans Affairs blames a coding error for the false diagnoses.
