The smoke and flames cause extensive damage to the medium-security prison's kitchen, medical center, canteen and visitation area, as well as a 196-bed dormitory. Eight staff members and eight inmates are injured in the melee, but none severely.

A leading U.S. stunt pilot dies after losing control of her plane at the World Aerobatic Championships in Britain. Fellow pilots say Vicki Cruse, a former member of the U.S. national aerobatics team, appeared to have mechanical problems during her flight and was unable to bail out because of the low altitude at which she was flying.
