The Atlantic Season's First Hurricane
Hurricane Bill, here in the open Atlantic on Friday, was expected to cause major flooding in Bermuda through Saturday. Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Bahamas were also seeing large swells from the Category 3 storm.

CIA Staged Mock Executions, Report Says

Details of a report leaked to The Associated Press show that CIA officers staged mock executions to get information from terrorism suspects. In one case, officers told a prisoner that gunfire nearby marked the sound of another suspect's death. The full report, from 2004, is scheduled to be released next week.

Inmates Set Kentucky Prison Ablaze

Rioting inmates burn several buildings in a Kentucky prison by setting fire to trash cans. The smoke and flames cause extensive damage to the medium-security prison's kitchen, medical center, canteen and visitation area, as well as a 196-bed dormitory. Eight staff members and eight inmates are injured in the melee, but none severely.

A leading U.S. stunt pilot dies after losing control of her plane at the World Aerobatic Championships in Britain. Fellow pilots say Vicki Cruse, a former member of the U.S. national aerobatics team, appeared to have mechanical problems during her flight and was unable to bail out because of the low altitude at which she was flying.
