LONDON (Aug. 22) - A leading U.S. stunt pilot was killed Saturday when her light aircraft crashed at an aerobatic show in central England.
Vicki Cruse, 40, from Santa Paula, Calif., died in an accident during the World Aerobatic Championships at Britain's Silverstone motor racing circuit.
Cruse, who was president of the International Aerobatics Club, is a former member of the U.S. national aerobatics team and was the first woman to qualify to race in her class at the Reno National Championship Air Races.
Team manager Norm DeWitt said Cruse had been carrying out a qualifying flight when she lost control of her aircraft.
DeWitt said in a statement that Cruse appeared to have suffered a mechanical problem in flight and was unable to bail out of her Edge 540 plane because of the low altitude at which she was flying.
"The USA lost one of its most outstanding pilots, and the IAC lost the finest president we have ever had," DeWitt said.

Air Accidents in the News
A foot-long hole opened up in the passenger cabin of this Southwest Airlines plane on July 13, forcing the 737 aircraft to make an emergency landing in West Virginia. The cabin lost pressure, but none of the 131 people on board were injured. The flight was traveling from Nashville to Baltimore.

Event organizers said Cruse was the only person aboard the Edge 540, and police confirmed no one else was hurt.
"Cruse was the sole occupant of the aircraft and the incident did not involve any other persons," event organizers Flying Aces said in a statement. "The incident is under investigation."
The event, held every two years, involved about 70 aerobatic pilots competing for world titles in stunt flying and aerobatics.
Police said accident investigators were due to visit the scene in an attempt to confirm the cause of Cruse's death.
Cruse was born in Springfield, Mo., and won a U.S. national aerobatic title in 2007. She had served as president of the International Aerobatics Club since 2005.
"Vicki was an outstanding competitor and was passionate about flying," said Tom Poberezny, chairman and president of the Experimental Aircraft Association. "Her flying skills and enthusiasm were highly valued."

Vicki was a friend of mine, and a fellow Unlimited Aerobatic competitor and air show pilot. My friends on the scene tell me and broken rudder cable was most likely for her inability to pull out after performing a one and a half rotation snaproll while flying straight down. The annual mortality rate for those of us who fly air shows or compete in aerobatic at the unlimited level is 1% to 2%. A stunning rate of carnage unmatched in any other area of sport including top-level automobile racing or rock climbing. Is it worth it? To those of us who do it.......Yes. After you do this, you can't go back to playing golf. Godspeed Vikki.Chip Beck

I can't believe how cold and arrogant some of you are... not to mention, arrogant. I know that some of you are just young teenagers with a big mouth...and I guess that is forgivable, if not laughable. But some of you are adults. Act like one. Someone lost their life, the story and the pilot deserve more than just a snide comment... if you are going to comment at all.

The number of stupid comments about this noted aviator being killed is truly amazing. It would be intereting to look into the eyes of some of these people. It's a mixture of jealousy and ignorance that prompts these type responses. The same people will have unprotected sex without a thought and wonder why they were so unlucky as to get the clap. They are also the ones that think nothing of sentencing an unborn child to death because they had unprotected sex. Participating in this risky type flying just happens to have been her "choice" and she probably didn't plan on anyone, particularly herself, being killed. Those of you who write the nasty, unsympathetci comments would probably write the same comment if she was your mother.
