Palin Urges Supporters to Be Civil

(Aug. 10) -- After pouring gasoline on the fire a few days ago, Sarah Palin is calling for civility in the health care reform debate.
Palin claimed on her Facebook page late Friday that President Obama wants to create "death panels" to decide who is worthy of medical care. Newt Gingrich backed her up, warning that "communal standards" are dangerous. Howard Dean rejected the notion that Obama's plan would lead to euthanasia. "She just made that up," the former Democratic chairman said of Palin -- who told the media in her farewell speech to "quit making things up."
Sunday night, Palin was back on Facebook counseling against tactics that could be seen as "intimidation or harassment," which she said "diminish our nation's civil discourse."
"Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American," two top Democrats charge in a USA Today op-ed blasting reform opponents who disrupt town hall meeting. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer say people "must be allowed to learn the facts."
But what are the facts? The New York Times breaks down the major points of contention. And Slate has assembled this handy guide for following the health care debate online.
Even when armed with the facts, reasonable people can disagree -- civilly or not -- about what should be done. A USA Today/Gallup poll finds the issue is so complex that public opinion doesn't follow the usual Republican-Democratic split. Seniors are the group most opposed to changing the system, the survey shows, but opinions are also influenced by where you live, whether you're insured and the state of your health.
Flashbacks
If you saw the movie "Woodstock," you know Wayne Rodgers. Who can forget the guy who stumbled out of the porta-potty toking on a pipe only to find a movie camera in his face? With the 40th anniversary of the legendary festival coming this weekend, the Washington Post found Rodgers, now 59, living in Woodstock, Va. "I'm still a (expletive) hippie, man," he happily reported.
Old hippies might remember another anniversary that passed over the weekend. It's been 35 years since Richard Nixon resigned as president. Politics Daily's Matt Lewis looks back at a farewell speech not to be forgotten.

RKaplan473 10:23 PMAug 11 2009 Can you imagine a president with one retarded child, another one who has a child out of wedlock, a husband who has used his "influence" to get enemies of his, who thinks foreign affairs means seeing Russia from your window, who can't remember what or if she reads the newspaper, who believes she is a "hockey mom" when in reality she is a hockey puck. And this is the best the Republican party has to offer. No wonder this country is in the mess it is in.......................................Maybe if we had more common sense people like Palin in, instead of artistice people like Pelosi in we would be in a much better place!

Conservatives for Patient Care, an extreme right wing GOP group, is responsible for the loud shout-downs at public town hall meetings. They don't want any discussion on the Health Reform Bill because Americans would learn the truth about that bill.....that there is no death panel (sorry Sarah, but you're out of your freakin' mind again)....that there has been a law requiring doctors to discuss End of Life plans with patients since 1999. An End of Life Plan does NOT MEAN a Plan to End Life...get a grip, conservatives. Learn the difference, for crying out loud. What would you rather have....health insurance for everyone regardless of pre-existing conditions, or fatter bonuses for insurance company CEO's? Anyone remember AIG and it's billion dollar bailout under Bubba Bush? That was way before the GOP lost the White House. Conservatives for Patient Care is an insurance industry backed organization. 2 2 usually equals 4.

TROWEL UPShe developed lung cancer in a state that has universal care------It was her health insurance that deny her.The news from Barbara Wagner's doctor was bad, but the rejection letter from her insurance company was crushing. The 64-year-old Oregon woman, whose lung cancer had been in remission, learned the disease had returned and would likely kill her. Her last hope was a $4,000-a-month drug that her doctor prescribed for her, but the insurance company refused to pay.
