Japan's finalist in the Miss Universe beauty pageant has sparked a national outcry with her official costume for the event.

Emiri Miyasaka's black leather kimono was so short it exposed her hot pink underwear and lacy garter belts.

The daring creation - first unveiled on a catwalk in Tokyo last month - was labelled by some critics as crass, sleazy and an affront to the traditional sense of Japanese beauty.

Ms Miyasaka has now reluctantly agreed to lengthen her costume.

She will wear the less revealing kimono at this month's finals of the Miss Universe pageant in the Bahamas.
