PHILADELPHIA (Aug. 6) -- A woman jogging in a Philadelphia park has been killed by a falling tree branch just days after a similar incident in New York's Central Park left a man comatose.
Police say it was a freak accident that killed the woman Wednesday evening in Fairmount Park, one of the biggest parks in the world.
Chief Inspector Scott Small says a 30-foot-long branch fell on the woman from 50 feet above. He says she was killed instantly.
Police say it's possible the unidentified woman didn't hear the branch breaking because she was wearing a portable music player, which was still playing when they arrived.
On July 29, a Manhattan computer engineer walking to work through Central Park was hit on the head by a 100-pound rotted tree branch. His mother said over the weekend he was getting better.

Does this strike anyone else as odd? Those trees in both those places are very old..why don't they send park crews or something to check for hazardous limbs? Obviously we are destroying the world and things like this will only get worse hah

better start having people check the trees for rotting or weak branches so more people don't get hurt. what with so many people losing jobs, would be a good way to help people who need employment....

Its nice to be able to listen to music, but there are times that require complete use of all your senses, especially running alone in a park. My heart goes out to her, and all of those who are close to her. I guess this may be a valuable lesson to all us, but it comes at an unmeasuralbe cost.

The Vibration from the Jogging made the Branch SNAP! Jogging is dangerous and it should be Better Controlled and Monitored! We need more laws and we have JUST the Government in Place to give IT to us, and they are getting ready to ,GIVE 'IT' TO US, 'BIG TIME'! I'm really sorry about these unfortunate disaster's and it proves that the Government MUST do something about them! We could start a program and call it "CASH-FOR-BONKER'S"! I'm positive we could find a demokrat that would write a bill that wouldn't cost, TOO MUCH(lol)!

Gosh, what a bunch of sad people! Yeah let's blame her, it was her fault. God forbid you go jogging with your iPod. This was a freak accident, if it happened more frequently then I would say don't jog in treed areas. Let's all sit home and watch T.V, oh no maybe a plane will l crash into your home and kill you and you will be blamed for that. Let's go to the gym, oh no a sick guy who has not had any in 19 years may kill you and that will be your fault too. I should stop typing before I get carpals tunnel and that will be my fault as well.

Shouldn't the city workers who take care of the parks be keeping an eye on things like this? It's not that hard to spot a shitty tree branch, especially one that's THIRTY FEET LONG.
