(Aug. 4) -- A 69-year-old Florida man says he won $500,000 on a lottery ticket -- but then he lost it.
"I thought I had maybe won $50," Louis Tolentino told South Florida's Sun-Sentinel. "But there was another zero, and then another and another."

He went to the liquor store where he'd purchased the ticket, and the clerk there said the machine printed out a ticket confirming Tolentino had won $500,000, the paper reported.
Tolentino said he wrapped the Gold Rush ticket in paperwork and put it in his back pocket, then drove to a lottery office. But when he arrived, the office was closed, so he stopped at a gas station to ask for directions, WPBF in West Palm Beach reported.
He said someone in line behind him "was getting too close to me," and he went home, and "it was gone."
Tolentino has filed a claim with state lottery officials, who will investigate.

You are right to ask for a printout receipt of a winning/losing ticket, XNavyDan, but Dateline showed a segment about retailers stealing lottery tickets, and they were using non-winning tickets for the receipt. The best thing is to hand them the ticket, stand there and watch them insert it into the machine and don't walk around the store believing they will be honest. Some stores have a machine where you can check the ticket yourself, but sometimes it will only say 'winner' and not give the amount. Just watch the clerks when you give them your ticket!

Dateline had a segment on last night about how retailers were stealing the winning tickets (frauding the customers by telling them they didn't win then keeping the tix for themselves). Investigators were able to prove it by security cameras in the store. They could tell who purchased the ticket at exactly that moment. This man should insist that they view their security cameras to prove that he bought the winning ticket. Poor old guy. I feel sorry for him. Say what you will about him being careless, but it could happen to anyone.... even YOU!

NEVER ASK STORE CLERKS TO CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE WON OR NOT! SOME WILL LIE TO YOU AND KEEP IT. ASK FOR A PRINT OUT.

When the thief tries to collect on the ticket, he will be asked where he bought it. They will then look to see if there is video of him in the place atthe time the ticket was sold. If he can't answer the first question and there is no video of him in the winning store, but they do have the original owner on video, the case is made.

Hey tell him to offer an award for the return of the ticket with no questions asked. A win win situation for the winner and the pick pocket. I think they both deserve a little something. In the end they both will get theirs, the criminal will eventually commit another crime and get caught and the winner I mean a fool and his money will soon part...so neither of these two clowns will win in the end

The solution is that if you buy a lottery ticket SIGN IT upon purchase. If he indeed won, he should have immediately put his name all over the back of it.

Somebody will win and it won't be me, my money goes for selfpreservation and I don't have extra money to give these scam bastards. When lottery came into this state we were told of all the perks that went with it and I have yet to see any, just more lies. Buy food, fuel, pay bills or give it to feed the needy.

He will get the money. If the crook brings the ticket in he will be arrested. In the mean time they will investigate and he will be paid off
