■[Action][Survival] WORLD ROSE CONVENTION STINKS! Homeless people in Utsubo park, Osaka castle park are now in the face of eviction threat!
Call for the international protests against Osaka city government.Homeless people in Utsubo Park and Osaka Castle Park are now facing an eviction threat!
This is a call for international protest against the Municipal Government of Osaka.
On January 5, 2006, Osaka City launched a legal procedure for eviction called "administrative subrogation" against all homeless people in Utsubo Park and some in Osaka Castle Park, totaling about 30.
At first, the “administrative subrogation” will be executed on January 20-23. The municipal authority is estimated to mobilize hundreds of city officials, guards and security police to destroy the tent villages of the homeless comrades.
On January 24 of last year, Nagoya City evicted homeless people in Shirakawa Park using the same method, mobilizing more than 600 officials.

In recent couple months, Osaka City has refused a negotiation with the homeless comrades in these parks, where the city has been planning reconstruction works for events like the "World Rose Convention 2006" and "National City Greenery Fair in Osaka".
On October 4, 2005, the city issued a written order to the homeless people, urging them to leave Utsubo and Osaka Castle Parks by November 30, 2005. Despite several protests carried out by the homeless comrades and their supporters, the city has never changed its attitude.
In Osaka, more than 10,000 homeless people live in the streets, parks and riversides. The largest reason of their homelessness is unemployment, but the municipal government has never taken any fundamental measures to solve the unemployment problem. Rather, it has tried to cut down social welfare expenses. Every year, more than 200 homeless people die in the streets of the city.
■[Action][Rights] Statement of Protest Regarding Waseda University Arrest, Tokyo
Waseda University Arrest, Tokyo A Statement of ProtestAround noon on December 20th 2005, on the campus of Waseda University in Tokyo, a person was distributing flyers protesting some university reforms. Suddenly seven to eight professors and officials of the Literature Department surrounded him and took him to the office of the security services. The police were called in by the professors to arrest him on the claim of intrusion of private property.
We believe that this incident is more than a local episode and should be cause for alarm: it is not just a matter of one university, but of the entire university system and Japanese society today. Moreover, the action taken at Waseda University recalls an earlier history of university repression that had taken place on a worldwide scale. What the event at Waseda dramatizes is a sad and instructive example of how the last remaining stronghold for protecting the freedom of expression simply decided to abdicate its responsibility and abandon its principal vocation. The larger consequence of the Waseda incident reveals a dangerous tendency today of society’s determination to erase the last ethical line between the domain of free inquiry and critical space from the interest of the state that needs to be defended.
We hereby protest the unlawful treatment of the person and call upon your support to strongly demand an apology from Waseda University.
