I would definately go to a beauty supply store. You could get the supplies you need and they could tell you how to do it. Also, if you have a beauty school in your area you might want to try them as they would be cheaper than a salon. Going from black to a lighter color takes a lot of work, and I would never tackle that on my own (even though I do most things to my hair myself also).
Good luck.

If you take a look at my profile pix, you'll see that I've gone through many hair-dye phases and I've also always been a DIY-er when it comes to coloring my hair.
The bleach that I've always used is Manic Panic Flashlightning. I'm pretty sure you can find it at most beauty supply stores, I get mine at Sally's if you have those in your area. It's usually by the Manic Panic dyes. Or you can order it here. It will damage the hell out of your hair though, so I'd suggest using a dye afterwards that includes conditioner.
I've tried a couple different bleaches and I swear by this one. It took me from my pitch black asian hair to this so yeah I'd really recommend it if you're trying to go from black to light.

I dont recommend bleaching the black out.I had black hair for a year (might go back) and I had it stripped with a new non chemical stripper. Went back to my natural (auburn) color and then put some brighter red and bleach blonde streaks through out it.
I cant remember then ame of the stuff she used, but my total work, stripping, then redoing my hair plus a cut. I paid $120 total and it was WORTH it. Which is cheap for stripping....andmy hair didnt feel mushy and gross. She had just got this stuff from a hair show that wknd and I was her first customer to use it on.

im a hairdresser. please do not use bleach! your hair will be fried and it isnt worth the damage. hair salons will charge alot because this is considered "corrective color" best cheap thing you can do is go to sally's and get a color stripper. they dont damage as much as bleach. you will want to use the stripper on only the colored hair (if you have regrowth try to avoid getting it on this area) follow the directions really closely and then you will have to re-color your hair after (hair strippers dont leave the hair at a good color). hope this helps! :)
i dyed my hair jet black, and i was so sick of it. (it is naturally dark brown but it's usually been light brown or brownish red) the saloon stripped the color out and then readjusted the color (it was really brassy and goldish colored after removing all the colors). you should try that, but bleach seems really harsh.
