Facebook now lets advertisers use your picture
Filed under: Sex Sells, Technology
How is this so? By default, Facebook users have been opted into a new Facebook Ads program which places your image in select advertisements based on partnerships (read a profitable selling of your likeness) that Facebook has made.
According to Facebook:
Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user's friends to create Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. While most users would be OK with their likeness being used to advertise a product that they are a fan of on Facebook like Snickers or the World Wildlife Fund; fewer would likely be happy to see their profile picture being used to pimp dating services and the like.
Fortunately it's very easy to opt out of this asinine decision by visiting the "News Feed and Wall" section of your Facebook settings. Cheryl Smith, the aforementioned "Hot Single," has more detailed opt out instructions available for those who need them.
For a company that was just criticized for calling dibs on everything posted to Facebook; enabling this feature for advertisers, especially without an announcement to users, flies in the face of its attempts to work with users for an agreeable environment.
If you don't want to end up with a slew of vulgar wall posts or having your boss and coworkers think you model for singles dating websites on the side, you best opt out pronto!
Clarification: There are many innocent uses of your profile picture by Facebook that fall under this opt out form including using your profile picture on Fan Pages and on Fan modules (like the one to the right of this article). The trouble comes when Facebook lets a company advertising "Hot Singles" use your profile picture because you have not taken steps to become a fan of "Hot Singles" like you would for WalletPop or any other company with a fan page on Facebook.

So, what's the big deal? If you are scared of anyone using your image, without consulting you; then stay off the internet!! Only add those that you really trust, don't accept anyone into your friend's lists that you don't know (otherwise it's not a friend's list!)
Dear, oh dear; one would have thought that people knew how the "internet" works; if you put some image, text etc., onto the internet there is a heck of a lot of chance that someone will save it, and then maybe later post it somewhere else, as his own (or not), a day from now or many years from now.
Just check this story out from the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jun/11/smith-family-photo-czech-advertisement
(Headline of the story is: American family's web photo ends up as Czech advertisement)

I know the SECRET to weight loss success. I work out each morning on an empty stomach and take all natural ACAI eez. Acai eez suppresses my appetite, increases my metabolism, and gives me a natural energy boost that lasts all day. Acai eez NEVER auto bills or auto ships like most of the acai berry companies on the net, so I know I can order without having to worry. I always order their deal of Buy 3 get 1 free so I lose weight while I save money! Lose weight and feel great and get your Acai eez at http://www.acaieez.com

My photo was used in the same singles ad, but my BROTHER was the one who saw it!
But, I do have to say that Steven is a dumbass to tell people not to use the Internet if they're scared of their images being used. People shouldn't have to copyright all their pictures, and facebook should have announced to their users that this would be happening and told them how to opt out of it if they didn't like it.

I have to agree - Steven - you are an idiot. Bet you wouldn't like it if you face was on an ad for erectile dysfunction.

Myself, I would not like my picture being used for any ad without my written permisssion. Since the opt out don't seem to work, I will remove myself completely from Facebook. I don't like those places anyway...facebook, twitter....etc. They are for kids who like to play stupid games. I only signed up because my grand daughter asked me to. I never go there unless she or another of my family sends a message there.

I totally agree. At the age of 28 I think that those sites are for teenagers and young adults. I think that grown adults have no place on these sites, and would love to see where they have made a site for GROWN ADULTS. I don't know about you, but I do not care to be on a site where there are 12 and 13 yr olds. I have no use for them. I do feel that if you post something on the web, you should be aware that people can take it and do whatever with it! DUH!!!!!! I am not sure why people don't grasp this. I do not post my pics, or will I until I know for sure that they are safe (which is not possible), until then, people should beware. And I feel like everyone should know this. I mean if you can look up anyone and find information about them, their lives and even their families. What would make you think that this couldn't happen with pics???????

AOL News is really going after Facebook! Earlier this morning they had an article about a nun whose nude pictures were posted on facebook from before she was a nun dating some guy.
It's seems like AOL is a bunch of poor losers who can stand to see an awesome online idea making more money then them! Poor babies...
Grow up, selective new reporting agenda'd fart hats!

This is exactly why I don't put photos up on facebook. They can't use them if they don't exist.

People are going to use the internet. you should be able to do so without feeling that your image is going to be used for advertising when you have not given permission. As for people saying social networking is only for kids it's probably becasue you're happy in your little box and don't want to venture out. Your mom probably has facebook. It isn't up to you to say who it's for and who it's not for. You do have the right to not participate. i have a right to use it and not have my phots be used with out my permission. It isn't rocket science...

I checked the privacy settings on Facebook. The advertisements are only shown to your friends. So if you have your profile set to private no one will see the adverts but people desiginated as your Facebook friends. Big deal. They can see all your pics anyway. This is a non issue.

Facebook's original idea was great. Communicate with the world. Sounds good but greed and the wackos will ruin it for every one else. As great things go the wierdos will come out from under thier rocks and ruin it. I believe facebook needs to change. It should be broken up ito groups. Children, teens, young adults and seniors. Also They shoud change the rules to protect pictures and written works just like a copyright would.
You want to believe that the world is perfect and mankind is in the image of some holy ghost. But in reallity, thirty three percent of the people are insane and don't know it, Thirty three percent are border line stupid and don't know it, and the rest don't know what the hell they are doing.
Richard (not in any group).

There are always privacy concerns with any site where you post your picture. It will always be good practice to review your account settings on any site where you have pictures up and make sure that your settings are to your liking. If not, take them down and find another site to put your pics up. It's not that difficult really...You don't even show up in ads outside your friends listing. If your friends can't get a giggle out of you being in a single ads, you might wanna think about finding new friends.
Bev:
There are too many stupid people eh? How about the ones who don't know the difference between your and you're like yourself? For someone who doesn't know the difference between "In other words" and "Another words" to be calling anyone else stupid is awfully bold, don't you think? Instead of telling people to get a real life, perhaps you should try looking for a life where you're actually literate.

I wouldn't like my face used on a porn site or a dating site, but Facebook does offer a lot of great value for FREE! I am a huge fan of flax and eating healthy unprocessed foods and have set up a fan page on flax and its benefits and the only cost is putting up with some ads.
I am not a fan of going on and off diets, and it seems like she has just changed her way of life. I feel you need to try to
change your day to day habits for best results. I tried Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem and found that I lost weight with both but when I
stopped buying the food, I gained it all back, plus more!
What I find works best is being more aware on a day to day basis of
your calories and eating a high fiber diet and cleaner like she has.
I am a also huge fan of fitflax http://www.fitflax.com that I started
eating only for weight loss, and found it also made my skin glow an
my hair thicker and glossier. I recently lost 30 pounds by being
more aware every day of how many calories I consume and making them
worthwhile calories. I have a low fat yogurt with golden roasted
fitflax (nutty/low carb/low cal). It is a flax and chia blend and
was written about in O mag. It tastes nutty and does not need to be
ground. They also listed a code to get 10% off. The code for 10% of
is fit10.
