Pyramid shaped watermelons: $560 each
July 17th, 2009 by James
A farm in Hokkaido has created pyramid-shaped watermelons:
Only 16 of the premium watermelons are being sold at a cost of 52,500 yen ($560) each. They’ve been branded with King Tut stickers [perhaps because you'd have to be as rich as a pharaoh to buy one].
Would you pay 52,500 yen for a watermelon?

I don’t even really like watermelon…
So, what does the Arabic say? And wouldn’t heiroglyphics have been more appropriate?
Knowing the track record of this sort of thing, no doubt something Muslims will find offensive….
اهرام= pyramids…plural form of the word هرم
بطيخ = watermelon
احمر = red (the color)…but it needn’t be included…I’m not too sure why they did
I just bought two organically grown watermelons at the farmer’s market for $4 USD each (around 375 yen).
well I just bought my limited-edition star-shaped watermelon for $5000! Ha!
Do you think if Japan ever fully embraces the Internet there will be a collective realization that everything around here is more expensive than it should be and the very idea of a $100 melon or a $50 grape is actually offensive? Or do they already know they’re paying too much and someone’s convinced them that’s OK because they’re getting something special in exchange for all that cash?
Uh…you don’t think $100 melons and $50 grapes are the norm or anything
do you? You can buy regular ones for much cheaper…
Personally I feel sorry for the Europeans, who have to pay through the nose for cars. I mean, look at the prices of Rolls-Royces and Ferraris.
I think it’s due to cooking shows where they highlight the main ingredient of a dish, and it always turns out to be some extremely rare veggie or meat that costs an arm and a leg, which they hype up by highlighting the crunch it makes, or the way the juices flow from it when you cook it, or because it is becoming extinct, etc.. Then, of course, you have the talento talking about how great the food is and you can really tell the difference, blah blah blah.
Once you know the process of growing watermelons in weird shapes, you will be surprised how simple it is to grow them and hence will definitely find the price of $560 beyond ridiculous.
But I doubt I will get offended if I were to live in Japan. It’s part of the culture and the product is certainly supported by the local economy. Actually if you do some simple calculations, as long as 1 watermelon is sold, that money probably can cover the cost of growing the batch of 16.
Someone’s making a $559.00 profit over there…
LOL all you goons that say no are just poor people.
Stay away from us rich people,
lol brb time to eat my octagonal shape watermelon.
Think of it: if you start cutting horizontally from the top to the bottom you get increasingly larger squares! Brilliant!
Well at least sell it for 30-40 or probably 50 bucks.
that’s alot for a watermelon.
but 560 is wayyyyyyyy tooo much!
DIY
Pyramid watermelon
1. Plant watermelon in your garden (or others if they allow!)
2. Sprinkle and wait until you see the offspring of watermelon
3. built pyramid mould without bottom
4. put the watermelon in the mould by let the branch go through the top of pyramid
5. wait.. wait.. wait
6. bingo! you can sell it for 54,500 yen. Dont forget the King Tut sticker to up the price
7. lets make it a couple of dozen, then we can get rich
I think that you’d probably need a few different sized molds as the fruit grows, but your point stands.
