Mossypond: You obviously have not dealt with Alaskan Brown and Polar bears. These magnificient animals will cross your track and actively hunt you if hungry. A 200 pound black bear and a 1000 pound Brown Bear are two distictictly different anamals. A Brown Bear will look at you like you owe him money, a Polar Bear will see you as food , and nothing else. I hunted caraboo, moose, deer, wolf, sheep and mountain goat in Alaska, but never stopped watching my backtrack for bear. Had one in my sights once with a tag in my pocket but refused because I respect them too much. I was carrying a 458 Win at the time. I love the big bears , but you sir, are .....?

GOOD for the old guy, I'm GLAD it worked for him! I've lived in bear country for over 50 years, and have had MANY bear encounters. I've NEVER had to kill one OR call the authorities to have one trapped - despite the fact that I've had various bears inside our buildlings over the years. Most I've ever had to do to one was shoot them with rubber buckshot in the rump - after that they steared clear of our buildlings even though we saw them walking by on the mountainside later on. Today we've got two bears around that I've seen recently, and neither one of them have bothered us because I ran them both off last year. Now, all I've gotta do is step outside and tell them to scram and they do!

Barack's solution: A hungry bear meets a hunter who wants a fur coat. They negotiate and both get what they want! Hint: the bear is full!

Ask Timothy Treadwell if he knows anything about bears, since he claimed grizzlies are nothing more than college frat boys in fur coats before him and his girlfriend were eaten by bears.

Actually, Longleg, bears are generally good-natured. Unfortunately, they are also notoriously unpredictable. If you ever find yourself facing one, you are better off somewhere . . anywhere . . else. Since wishing doesn't usually work this side of the great and wonderful world of Oz, make a lot of noise and hope you'll still be alive tomorrow.I give my personal salute to the elderly gentleman who barked like a dog. Also my profound relief that it happened to work with that particular bear.
