City Council Wants Jacksons to 'Defray' Memorial Costs

Los Angeles officials are bracing themselves for Michael Jackson's upcoming memorial service and hoping for financial support from Jackson's family. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry said she'd "love it" if they would help defray some of the city's expected costs associated with Tuesday's memorial but council has yet to hear from the family.
During CBS' 'The Early Show,' Perry admitted the city doesn't have an estimate of those costs, but they are expecting a huge turnout. An official at the memorial press conference said that the Los Angeles Police Department has funds baked into their budget each year to pay overtime for extraordinary events, which this is considered. But council is worried the funds needed for proper security will exceed the budget.

Over the weekend, more than 1.6 million fans registered online for a chance to attend the Staples Center ceremony, and only 8,750 names were chosen. Now Los Angeles officials are concerned about other fans clogging city streets and are warning people who don't have tickets to stay away during Tuesday morning's events.
Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell of the LAPD told the press on Sunday morning that downtown streets surrounding the arena will be closed Tuesday while the memorial is being held (it starts at 10 a.m.). So, in other words, no use in showing up if you aren't armed with a ticket.
"Stay home," he said emphatically. "Stay somewhere where you can have access to a TV, some air conditioning and some friends, and watch it in a respectful manner ... rather than standing out here on the city streets."

Winners of the free online ticket drawing were e-mailed Sunday July 5th with directions on how to redeem their tickets, said Michael Roth, a spokesman for Staples Center owner AEG Live. The tickets will admit 11,000 people to the Staples Center plus 6,500 in the Nokia Theater overflow section next door. The streets around the stadium will be closed to prevent those without tickets from trying to attend, police said Sunday.
Only ticket holders and credentialed folks will be allowed in what's being described as a "safe zone." The "zone" is simply the block around the Staples Center, located at North Olympic Blvd., South Pico Blvd. and East and West Blaine St.
More Details:
>> Of the tickets, 11,000 will be for fans to enter the services in the Staples Center, while 6,500 are for a simulcast in the Nokia Theater next door.
>> Wristbands and tickets will then be distributed at an off-site location, and not at the venue.
>> No tickets will be sold, and there will be no outside broadcast at or around the Staples Center.
>> A worldwide video feed from the services which will be available to every network and on the Internet for free.
>> There will also be no funeral procession despite previous reports of one.
Details of what will actually happen during the service -- performances, appearances, events, etc. -- have yet to be announced.
The Jackson family had initially hoped to hold the memorial at the Neverland Ranch, but that fell through. There had also been talk of burying the singer at his old home.
Billionaire Thomas Barrack, who owns Neverland in a joint venture with Jackson, sought an exemption to bury the singer at the ranch. But the person says it's a complicated process and it couldn't be done for a burial this week.

I agree that the city should not bear the costs involved with the memorial...however how much tax revenue due you think the city will draw in from reaturants, hotels street vendors etc? If the city couldn't afford it then they should have refused to host it.

The city is NOT PAYING for the funeral. They are covering the cost of the city services. They are covering the cost for THEIR EMPLOYEES DOING THEIR JOBS. Is the city turning over tourist dollars generated from this memorial to the Jackson children? The city is making PLENTY off of this.

How much more does California have to do to the Jacksons for them to get the message? Why can this man not be buried in Indiana? Why would you bury your son in this broke hatin state? Hello Jacksons they hate your son! why are you burying him there? California was Joe Jacksons dream and for once can it be about Michael? Oh and I do think you should help fray some of the cost so that your dead son will owe nothing to these ungodly hateful people and bury him in Indiana!

Wait a minute.. the city has no idea of cost? Well.. how many officers needed per 50 people? How many cars, fuel etc.? How much private security will be needed? What will be the costs for clean up? OMG did I come up with some numbers? Now don't get me wrong.. but. if the city wanted to go ahead on this memorial 100% then the city pays, but remember these type of people are always looking for free bee's to compensate the outcomes of the 1800's. If the family suggested it.. ?? Honestly I believe you will not see one dollar from these phonies!!
