WASHINGTON (June 23) - The subway train that plowed into another stopped train, killing at least seven people and injuring scores of others in the nation's capital, was part of an aging fleet that federal officials had sought to phase out because of safety concerns, an investigator said Tuesday.
But the Metrorail transit system kept the old trains running despite warnings in 2006, said Debbie Hersman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

The rush-hour crash sent more than 70 people to hospitals. Mayor Adrian Fenty announced Tuesday that seven had died, including the operator of the moving train. Earlier, the District of Columbia Fire Department Web site announced that three bodies had been found in addition to the six fatalities reported Monday.
(There are conflicting reports on the number of dead. The Washington Post puts the number at nine, while The Associated Press has it as seven.)
Fenty said two victims were hospitalized in critical condition.
Hersman said investigators expect to recover recorders from the train that was struck. The train that triggered the collision was part of an old fleet that was not equipped with the devices, which can provide valuable information to determine why the crash occurred, Hersman said.
She told The Associated Press that the NTSB had warned of safety problems and recommended the old fleet be phased out or retrofitted to make it better withstand a crash. Neither was done, she said, which the NTSB considered "unacceptable."

It was the worst crash in the history of Metrorail, the pride of the District of Colombia tourism industry that has shuttled tourists and commuters around Washington and to Maryland and Virginia suburbs for more than three decades.
The operator of the train that barreled into the stopped cars was identified as Jeanice McMillan, 44, of Springfield, Va., according to Metro officials.
McMillan was hired in March 2007 as a bus driver and was tapped to become a train operator in December. Metro spokeswoman Candace Smith said employees start out as bus drivers before moving to trains.
One of McMillan's neighbors said she was proud of her job and was a meticulous mother who ironed her Metro uniform every night.
"If she could have stopped the train, she would have done everything in her power," said Joanne Harrison, who lives across the hall from McMillan.
She put a note, decorated with purple ribbons and hearts, on McMillan's door.

"Your friendly smile and your appealing welcome will always be dear to our hearts," the note said. "Don't you worry, we will take care of Jordan, your only child, your only love."
Passenger Maya Maroto, 31, was riding on McMillan's train.
"We were going full speed — I didn't hear any braking. Everything was just going normally. Then there was a very loud impact. We all fell out of our seats. Then the train filled up with smoke. I was coughing," Maroto said.

Maroto, of Burtonsville, Md., said there was confusion after the impact because no announcements were immediately made. She said some passengers wanted to climb out, but others were afraid of being electrocuted by a rail.
Tijuana Cox, 21, was in the train that was hit. She had her sprained arm in a sling Tuesday.
"Everybody just went forward and came back," with people's knees hitting the seats in front of them, said Cox, of Lanham, Md.
The only other fatal crash in the Metro subway system occurred Jan. 13, 1982, when three people died as a result of a derailment. That was a day of disaster in the capital: Shortly before the subway crash, an Air Florida plane slammed into the 14th Street Bridge immediately after takeoff from Washington National Airport. The plane crash, during a severe snowstorm, killed 78 people.
In January 2007, a subway train derailed in downtown Washington, sending 20 people to the hospital and prompting the rescue of 60 others from the tunnel. In November 2006, two Metro track workers were struck and killed by an out-of-service train. An investigation found that the train operator failed to follow safety procedures. Another Metro worker was struck and killed in May 2006.

mwperedo, I agree with you 100%! Also, for those that don't know the Metro System, chances are the trains were running on the automatic system (train operators can override the system; however, during rush hour they generally are told to not override the auto system (today they are running on manual (the operators have total control). Furthermore, as bad as this accident was it could have been much worse. Both trains were inbound (evening rush hour is outbound).

One more thought. DC is a hard working city in general. It really is. But, the people who really work in DC -- the really hard workers -- as in anywhere in the country are those who are blue collar. In DC, some of those people are white, but most are African American, African, Hispanic, Asian, etc. There are some people on welfare, sure, but never heard of or saw an immigrant on welfare -- don't think you qualify. What I saw everyday were all those people working two full time jobs or three part time ones and doing all the crap jobs that no white person in the city wants to do so that their children would have a better life. And what I see of the black community in an around DC is that it is coming up. Maryland has the most blacks people who make six figures in the country and most of those people came from tough backgrounds and are now high-level professionals. I think everyone who is sick of people who are not just like them should put on their shoes for a day or so.

There are a lot of good hard working black people. The low life scum N make it bad for all the normal blacks. You know if you have one bad experience with someone ethnically different from you, you forget all the good ones. If a minority is treated better by the govt than you are that's the gov ts fault. most people try to get as much as they can. Its the govt fault for giving to them

I have a relative who works for metro. They have been defunded quite a bit over the last 5 years -- lots of layoffs and safety suffered. This is the result. It's a terrible tragedy. Metro is a great system and well managed on the whole. DC is a poorly run city because it keeps getting pulled between the feds and the city and most of it is a really poor city. I have seen lots of things happen as far as race relations in DC, but I have never seen Black people in the city do something like fake they were on the train after a wreck -- I mean people do all kinds of things, but I certainly couldn't split something like that by race. I am extremely sorry for the families of the people killed and those injured on the red line yesterday, including the metro operator. I have ridden that line countless times. May I please mention to all those being hateful, that if you were on a metro-line train during rush hour, you are a person who works and works hard.

I am not ashamed at all, its called FREEDOM OF SPEECH if you dont like it, oh well, theres things on here others say I dont agree with, its ok, I welcome all opnions, even ones different than mine, thats the difference with me, I welcome all sides, I DONT GET OFFENDED!!!! Its JUST A WORD! Tired of this insanity over WORDS!!!!! I get offended at rich companies getting bailed out, taxes going up because some rich person doesnt want to take a pay cut to save their company and lots of others. Yes I thank you for fighting the good fight and am greatful each day I have these freedoms but this current governemnt is trying to take these away from us, what our ancestors fought for...I didnt do anything wrong, tried to state a point but again you have to read between the lines, I dont care what nationality the driver of the train is, its a tragedy all around and unnecessary death DUE to greedy rich companies. Tax dollars have nothing to do with it, they should have just done it.

The trains should not have crashed because when a train passes a signal the light behind it turns red and a stop arm automatically goes up that will activate the emergency breaks of a train behind it that gets too close. This is definitely a mechanical problem. The train operator probably should have been able to spot the train ahead and stop on time, but the signal system should not have allowed the trains to get that close

Wow to think I serve in the Armed Forces to protect the Freedom , Rights and Security of people like Olwarior and THE UNIQUE LOVER . You two should be ashamed of your comments. Instead of having compassion for the victims and their families you act like you life is of better value than those on the metro. The fact that the train operator was a women has nothing to do with the accident either and if she was black, but I do not recall reading her ethnicity in the story, that too has NOTHING to do with that. Unfortunately my job does not allow for me to pick in and chose whom to protect in this country. My fellow soldiers have lost life, limb and eyesite to protect those who appreciate not only the American Freedom, the lives of those around them, our families and loved ones and frankly the air that you breath. It saddens me to think they have lost their lives in protecting the two of you with your racist comments and your ignorant way of thinking. It also seems as though people...

ozblood, my point exactly- AND they wonder why people speak badly of them in general, this is why! But yes there are whites that are JUST as bad too, it takes all kinds and bad people are all colors and nationalitys yes but its hard to not be bitter when some get special treatment...if you say you are not white, you get help faster from welfare, dont believe me? Try it, go apply and check the box hispanic, black etc....and have a friend check the both anglosaxon/white and you will see what I mean. I know cause I have friends who did this and they are white, and put down different and they got help quicker, its a fact, the foreign people get treated this way because if they didnt, they could go tell their home country they were misstreated and there would be hell to pay...its true even if you dont want to believe it. Its sad, illegals get better treatment than americans.

I lived in the Washington, DC area from September 1984 through October 2008. This was an unbelievable accident. I used MetroRail and MetroBus until my health required me to use MetroAccess (the third componet of Metro, the ParaTransit Service in the DC area). No matter what anyone says, even after this accident, MetroRail is still the best subway system (part of the system is above ground / part in under ground) in the country. No eating, or drinking is allowed in the MetroRail System (if caught by Metro Police, they are subject to arrest. Also, the system closes at midnight. This accident was the worst in Metro's 33 year history. The only other time that Metro customers lost their life was in 1982 (the same day that the Air Florda plane crashed into the 14th Street Bridge during a snow storm). There was a MetroRail accident a number of years ago at the Woodley Park/Zoo Station that resulted in some minor injuries. There were also two accidents where Metro employees were killed, ...
