Oyakeakahachi was also called as Gawara Hong akahachi. He became a notable figure in the age of rival warlords, and he lived in groups based on Ohohamachon at that time; he was adored as the king of people.

In the 18th year of civilization (A.D.1486), King Sangjin of Jungsan Dynasty of main island of Okinawa sent an envoy to Yaeyama district and prohibited Irikiyaamari Festival by accusing it as obscene, but the residents of the island raged against this suppression on religion. Oyakeakahachi led the revolt against Jungsan Government.

He waited for the response of the Jungsan government by not paying the taxes for three years, and King Sangjin sent 3,000 crack contingents and 46 warships along with Gunnampung, shaman of Gumido and a representative prince. The king appointed him as a general to suppress the rebellion. Akahachi struggled hard but failed and disappeared at Jeowon. It was the 9th year of Myeongeung (A.D. 1500), 454 years ago.

Cherishing tombstone of Gawara Hong
Akahachi insisted free civil right against feudalism, and fought bravely for the residents of the island. Although he lost at the battle, his spirit and action are still in the hearts of the descendents.

By the tombstone here, we pay tribute to his great achievement.
