Hong Gil-Dong originally had been despised as a leader of¡¸band of thieves¡¹in the distorted history. However, he was a hero and a person who conducted a campaign to promote citizen's right. He denied the discrimination arising from social hierarchy of Joseon and punished the corrupted officials who mistreated the people of Joseon.

What is Hwalbindang, the community that Hong Gil-Dong advocated even earlier than the republican of Cromwell of England by 1500 years?

Surprisingly, the final retiring place that Hong Gil-Dong and his party, Hwalbindang remains at the peak of Museong Mountain (614m) in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province.

Hong Gil-Dong Fortress is located at the peak of Museong Mountain (614m above the sea level), Gyesil-ri, Sagok-myeon, Gongju City, South Chungcheong Province.
It is the final retiring place that Hong Gil-Dong performed chivalrous robbery, leading Hwalbindang. It is strategically important place built on a higher ground that can see all the surrounding cities such as Hongseong, Cheongyang and Buyeo.

Its important remains prove the actions of Hwalbindang in Chungcheong Province. The records in¡¸Authentic of Joseon Dynasty¡¹notes that ¡¸ Hong Gil-Dong and followers acted in Chungcheong Province, but they were captured with the headman of the region, Gui-Son Eum, and sent in custody to Hanyang (old name of Seoul) and tortured.¡¹
