Beard dye tips, please
-
Friday, February 23, 2007 6:03 AM
Anybody here dyed their beard, or part of it? (Besides the obvious guy, I mean). Any tips? I assume it will need bleaching or something first. What is the procedure? What are the pitfalls?

Could definitely benefit from some tips from the man himself. I, too, am interested in this.

When I've done it (for other people ) I used a Flash Lightening kit from Manic Panic to bleach it out. The hair is coarse, so it takes a little longer. Make sure to keep the bleach a good half inch from your skin, never put it right next to it or on the skin. IF any does get on you wipe it off with cold water right away. If you wrap the part being bleached in tin foil and hold a hiar dryer to it to heat it up it will also work faster, but keep checking it to see if it's where you want it. Once the bleaching is done just pick a color and go. Manic Panic also sets faster with heat and gets more vibrant the longer you leave it on. It does fade out over time, because it's a vegan dye. But you get a lot more color choices from them and after bleaching, the last thing you want to do right away is put more chemicals on your hair.

While we're on the beard thread. Any way to shape or sculpt the goatee so it looks more like a V than a big chinny bush?

I tried facial hair bleach which didn't do shit. So after trying numerous different formulas we just decided to go with straight clorox bleach whcih did the trick. It hurt a little bit but I was fine the next day.

I've done it a few times... At first the bleaching part sounds like a pain in the ass.. But its rather simple, just apply hair bleach on desired area, leave it be for 30 minutes or til you see its blonde enough, then wash that off, apply color, depends on the formula too, some need peroxide, some dont, I use a 2+1 formula dye, which is 2 'portions' of peroxide (volume 40) and 1 of color. I usually leave it for about 30 minutes and... Just have quick looks at it, retouch it and stuff like that. Wash it off and its set to go. And this is what eventually I ended up looking like: Lousy pic, I know, but it was taken with a shitty cell phone and with a light bulb right on my face... Pic is about (over) a year old.

When it comes to the color dye... I give a big +1 to aluminum foil, hair dryer, and leaving it on a whole lot longer than the directions say. Like literally just leave it in as long as you can stand it before you get bored or feel too ridiculous from running around with aluminum foil on ya. Unless your hair is blonde, you aren't going to see a thing unless you bleach it. That I do suggest following the directions for, though. Manic Panic makes some, but your local drug/department store should also sell some. There's also products now that contain the bleach and color all in one step. Those are awfully convenient. Not as many color choices, but I've seen red, blue, pink, and purple. I've seen those also at my local Walgreens and WalMart and stuff. Rule 15

Bleach first until hair gets near white, then dye.

Sorry about the poor focus on the first 2 pics... Before During After It's a bit more coppery than I wanted, I was after something a bit brighter. But it will do. I did it as part of the World's Greatest Shave thing.

You can go to almost any store, (Kohl's, WalMart, KMart, Sears....) and by beard groomers. They are like a clippers and come with attachments to keep it many lengths. I used to have one like Jordan does now, but had to trim it back...way back when I entered the Radiography program.
