A GROUP OF THREE VERY RARE EMBROIDERED BUDDHIST ROUNDELS
MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY
Each roundel exquisitely embroidered with silk threads using techniques including chain, satin and couch stitches, the first medallion depicting a Bodhisattva seated on a lotus flower above a tiered platform, the hands held together with forefingers extended in Abhiseka mudra, a gesture of annointing, the head and body emanating aureoles, surrounded by ruyi-head clouds, within a circular border; the second, similarly depicting a Bodhisattva wearing an elaborate headdress accommodating the Amitabha at the centre, one hand held to the bare torso, emerging to one side a wispy ether forming a cluster of ruyi clouds enclosing a moon, detailed with the hare pounding on the Elixir of Life, the deity is surrounded by further ruyi clouds; and the third roundel with Guardian King of the West, Virupaksa, dressed in military armour and holding a snake in one hand
