An English private collection
An identical bowl is illustrated by H. Brinker and A. Lutz,Chinese Cloisonne: The Pierre Uldry Collection, Zurich, 1989, pl. 16, where the authors suggested a sacrificial function for the bowl based on the shape of the vessel and the crossed vajra design, op. cit., p. 89. Both the present bowl and the Uldry bowl bear resemblance to a ritual vessel in the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by H. Garner, Chinese and Japanese Cloisonne Enamels, Faber & Faber, London, 1962, pl. 17B. Although the ritual vessel has a short beaked spout and ring handle attached to the rim, the lotus decoration, ornamental bands and incised vajra all compare closely to those on the alms bowls.
