Ways You Might Be Breaking the Law (With Your Tech)
12. Recording Conversations
Rolling tape during a meeting or phone call is a great supplement to note taking, as long as you follow the rules. It's never legal to tape a conversation that you are not part of and wouldn't normally overhear, without permission of the parties. Federal law allows you to tape your own phone calls, even without informing other people on the line. But 12 states require consent of all parties on a call, and some extend the requirement to in-person conversations. For all the red tape regarding taping, check these guidelines compiled by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
