Did Too Much of the Berlin Wall Fall?

(May 12) -- You might remember the images: scores of Germans gleefully tearing down the Berlin Wall in late 1989 as the Soviet Union fell apart and Cold War came to an end.
But now some Berliners are having second thoughts -- not about the demise of communism and the reunification of their country, but about the demolition of the wall itself. Were they too good at destroying the barrier?

As the 20th anniversary of the wall's fall approaches on Nov. 9, some Berliners wish more of the structure was standing to serve as a memorial, The Washington Post reports.
Burkhard Kieker, the director of Berlin's tourism bureau, told the newspaper that the city shouldn't forget the era that the wall represents.
"One mistake was to take away too much of the wall," he said. "We did the job in a very German way -- very organized -- and we finished it off, almost completely."
The 96-mile wall was built in 1961 to separate West Berlin from East Germany. The two Germanys reunited in late 1990.
Preserving it may seem like a no-brainer to outsiders, but The Post explains why it's a sensitive matter in Germany.
"The problem that we have, and what makes it very difficult in contrast to, say, the Mall in Washington, is that we're not commemorating our victories. We're commemorating our acts of shame," said Rainer Klemke, who oversees Berlin's historical sites.
Many people want to forget the Cold War. There are other factors at play, too. Some in East Germany feel like their culture and politics have been taken over by the West since reunification; and some in the former West Germany accuse easterners of feeling nostalgic for the communist era.
Berlin has started cleaning up two dilapidated parts of the wall that are still standing. And officials plan to build a Cold War museum near Checkpoint Charlie, the famous border crossing where U.S. and Soviet tanks stood off in October 1961, soon after East Germany built the wall.
The standoff involved a dispute over whether East German guards were authorized to examine the travel papers of a U.S. diplomat entering East Berlin. It ended peacefully.

Ak841 09:06 PMMay 13 2009 Reagan had nothing to do with the wall coming down. Russia was in trouble way before Reagan came into office. Reagan was a puppet other people pulled the strings.Read up on Reagan before he entered the whitehouse you monkey! He was actually a damned good Governor and prior to that was head of the Screen Actor's guild. Regardless of your Socialist leanings, you have to give credit where credit is due. Reagan restored this country, after Carter managed to run it into the ground. He also was a good manager in that he delegated the work, and didn't try to micromanage everything much like Hitler did and Obama seems to want to do.

Sykiks "...there is your Reagan legacy...be proud of it."You need to read up on your history. You just don't like the fact that Reagan oversaw the demise of the Soviet Union. Yes we spent more money than the Soviets did, but that was Reagan. He wanted to make the US so strong and put us so far ahead of the Soviets that they'd go bankrupt. It worked. The USSR collapsed. In its place arose Russia - or Putin's new and improved USSR. The world was made a better place because of Reagan.

Most people voted that the Berlin Wall should not have been kept. I voted that it should have, for history's sake, like The Great Wall of China. I recall it was virtually uncompromisable, and no one ever escaped. Those who tried were shot by machine gun. No, I think it should have been kept and preserved for historic preservation. At least most of it should have been kept, > 50%.

Sykiks, YOur grasp of history tells you don't read much.Still, if Reagan was the do nothing prsident you claim, I'd still rather have him than Obama, who in 100 dsys has tanked our economy, trashed the stock market and overseen the devaluation of our homes...oh, and lt's not forget we are now so buried in overspending I'm not sure we can ever get out

Sheeesh...ignorant people. Reagan happened to be in office when the wall fell....that is about it. The reason the wall fell is simple...we had more money to spend than they did. They couldn't afford to keep up with the Americans any more. The Soviet Union was falling before Reagan was ever sworn in. Reagan was an actor....albeit not a very good one, but he could still read the lines that were given to him to say. Even mediocre actors can deliver a good speech when all they have to do is read it. He was a figurehead for those behind him much like W was. Hell...the man had Alzheimers...he was lucky to remember his name the last four years....he didn't do anything except give prewritten speeches and look good for 8 years...oh and create the homeless problem by cutting funds to mental health facilities and having most of them dumped on the streets...there is your Reagan legacy...be proud of it.
