Scientists Solve a Shark Mystery

(May 8) -- Each winter, the basking sharks that live in the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans vanish for the cold season. Where do they go? The question has puzzled scientists for years, but they have uncovered at least part of the answer.
The basking shark populations that live off New England head to the tropics, National Geographic reports.

Scientists solved the mystery by tagging 25 of the giant fish and tracking them with satellite transmitters. Many of the sharks swam to Florida. Others headed to the Caribbean.
"When a tag popped up in the Caribbean Sea, I was really blown away," study co-author Gregory Skomal told National Geographic. Skomal is a marine biologist for the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.
One of the sharks migrated much farther than the others, down to the mouth of Brazil's Amazon River.
Skomal said the fish probably head to Florida because food is more plentiful in its warm waters. But the Caribbean? And South America? He couldn't explain those migrations.
National Geographic said the animals may be moving farther in search of new nurseries. But that raises another question: Where do basking sharks give birth? Scientists don't know. In fact, they've never even seen a young basking shark, the magazine said.

Keep in mind, Catie7, that if you copy someone's entire post it might be too big to post along with yours, so you need to choose which parts of it you want to copy and paste. Just choose the important parts you want to talk about or reply to. This isn't really too hard. It just takes a little practice fitting just the right number of words so it doesn't run over too far. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

Ctcatie7 02:48 AMMay 09 2009 How do you put the persons name befor yours, on your computer like what you just did,..........on the internet??.............what you do is place your cursor over the first letter of their post, click your left mouse key, hold it down and drag it while holding it down across their entire post, stopping at the end of it. Then, while their post is outlined in blue, you click on the right mouse key and hit "copy". This copies their post onto your computer's memory. Then all you have to do is go down to the "write a comment" block. There you right click again and hit "paste." Their entire post appears magically. Then usually you put a ....... or a @@@@ and say what YOU want to say. (Making it kind and smart) Then just hit "post"
