This is an interesting theory and may be true. No one will know for sure, and the fact that Van Gogh spent years battling his demons of drug addiction and insanity in mental institutions as well as on his own and with the help of his brother, Theo, makes the idea he cut it off himself possible. However, Gaugain too was a tempermental artist and it is interesting as a theory. He was a mentor to Van Gogh and idolized by him so I could see this being a possibility as well. Very interesting, I have a book on Vincent's letters to Theo and it will be interesting to read them again!

Nonnel9 J9, I used to live in Miami, but not since the Homestead Track was built. Been to Sebring many times, though I don't remember all of any of the races. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Sebring was a flat-out blast. All you packed was a toothbrush and beer. ( So I don't get yelled at ). I think Jim Dine, Leroy Neiman and Norman Rockwell's grandson go there also.

I always read wear Van Gogh cut off just his ear lobe, and not the whole ear.But you read all kinds of stories about artist. Many back then were kind of crazy because of the lead paint they used. some lived in the studios, The got their food and the paint mixed up with their food. The would rub their eyes with paint on their hands. In later years many artist were almost blind or needed glasses. Some say Van Gogh had Claucoma.

perhaps the self portrait was done from a mirror thus reversing the image, left ear appearing as right ear. From what I've read Van Gogh was not mad but incredibly lucid, passionate and long suffering.

If somneone swipes your girlfriend, it is not an ear that you cut off. I don't beleive the story.
