 » What is ImgBurn?

ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!

It has several 'Modes', each one for performing a different task:

  • Read - Read a disc to an image file
  • Build - Create an image file from files on your computer or network - or you can write the files directly to a disc
  • Write - Write an image file to a disc
  • Verify - Check a disc is 100% readable. Optionally, you can also have ImgBurn compare it against a given image file to ensure the actual data is correct
  • Discovery - Put your drive / media to the test! Used in combination with DVDInfoPro, you can check the quality of the burns your drive is producing

ImgBurn supports a wide range of image file formats - including BIN, CUE, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG and PDI.

It can burn Audio CD's from any file type supported via DirectShow / ACM - including AAC, APE, FLAC, M4A, MP3, MP4, MPC, OGG, PCM, WAV, WMA and WV.

You can use it to build DVD Video discs (from a VIDEO_TS folder), HD DVD Video discs (from a HVDVD_TS folder) and Blu-ray Video discs (from a BDAV / BDMV folder) with ease.

It supports Unicode folder/file names, so you shouldn't run in to any problems if you're using an international character set.

ImgBurn supports all the Windows OS's - Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 and 7 (including all the 64-bit versions). If you use Wine, it should also run on Linux and other x86-based Unixes.

It's a very flexible application with several advanced features that are often lacking in other tools, especially when it comes to burning DVD Video discs. It supports all the latest drives without the need for updates (including booktype / bitsetting / advanced settings on many of the major ones - i.e. BenQ, LiteOn, LG, NEC, Plextor, Samsung, Sony).

There is an image queue system for when you're burning several images (which you can automatically share between multiple drives if you have more than one) and an easy-to-use layer break selection screen for double layer DVD Video jobs. The Automatic Write Speed feature allows you store your favourite burn speed settings on a per 'Media ID' basis, right down to a drive by drive level. Data captured during the burn (write speed, buffer levels etc) can be displayed / analysed using DVDInfoPro.

Whilst ImgBurn is designed to work perfectly straight out of the box, advanced users will appreciate just how configurable it is.

Oh and let's not forget the best thing about it.... it's 100% FREE ;-)

ImgBurn v2.4.4.0 Released! Friday 10th April 2009 Take me to the top, baby!
Originally intended to be a 'next day' release to fix the bug in v2.4.3.0 whereby the 'Supported Write Speeds' text was missing from the disc information box, I decided to wait few more days and add/tweak some other bits based on your feedback (and my own!) Smile Emoticon

As it happens, the v2.4 series did need another 'maintenance' release and this is it... sorry!

FirmwareHQ.com Goes Live! Wednesday 1st April 2009 Take me to the top, baby!
Firmware HQ

http://www.firmwarehq.com/

As the name suggests, the site is dedicated to providing you with a one-stop-shop for the latest firmware releases for your optical disc drives.

The site is a joint venture between the man behind 'Digital Digest' and us lot (and by that I mean myself and the beta team!).

The site has actually been up and running for a few weeks now, but with the release of v2.4.3.0, I figured now was a good time to plug it! Wink Emoticon

ImgBurn now uses the search engine on FirmwareHQ.com rather than the (until recently) defunct one on RPC1.org when you use the 'Tools' -> 'Drive' -> 'Check For Firmware Updates...' feature.
ImgBurn v2.4.2.0 Released! Tuesday 22nd July 2008 Take me to the top, baby!
This will probably be the last 'maintenance' type release for the v2.4 series, meaning I can finally start to implement some decent new features!

Thanks again to everyone that have helped make this release possible.

Finally... something serious on April Fools day! Fool Emoticon

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank a few of the unsung heroes out there...

1. The Beta Team - They find the bugs so you don't have to! Occassionally they also come up with some decent ideas and if I'm feeling in a good mood I implement them! Wink Emoticon

2. The Translators - Helping to bring ImgBurn to the masses! I've enough trouble just doing the 'English (United Kingdom)' version so it's great that others take the time to translate it into their own language.

3. The Donors - All the kind people out there that donate some of their hard earnt cash. Seriously, without you lot ImgBurn wouldn't exist.

Oops, I made some last minute changes in 2.3.1.0 for the detection/parsing of FAT16/32 file systems and apparently that messed up the detection/parsing of all the others! Doh!

Please accept my sincere apologies!

LG GBW-H10N Blu-ray Disc Rewriter Review! Tuesday 13th February 2007 Take me to the top, baby!
SVP Logo SVP Communications very kindly lent me one of their Blu-ray drives so I could get ImgBurn v2.2.0.0 working with Blu-ray drives / media properly. Thanks SVP ;-)

With all the testing I was doing, I figured I might as well knock up a mini review of the drive too!

You'll find it in the new 'Reviews' section :-)

Finally it's here - v2 with the long promised 'Build' mode! You can now use ImgBurn to create ISO images from files on your hard drive, or burn them directly to a disc.

There are a few new guides in the forum for those of you that need them. (Thanks Corny ;-) )

Please Note: You may get a 'PECompact' virus warning from your AntiVirus software. This is a false alarm and will hopefully be fixed when they update their definition files. 'PECompact' is merely a compression program.

Update @ 10:33 PM GMT: I've updated the file on the 'ImgBurn' mirror. You shouldn't get any more 'PECompact' virus warnings if you redownload that one.

1.2.0.0 had so many new bits / changes that it was inevitable a few new bugs would be introduced.

This release hopefully resolves those and adds a few new features to boot! See the changelog for more info.

I strongly advise everyone to update to this version.

Myself and the beta team have put a lot of effort into this release, not only with the program itself, but also with the forum.

Thanks to generosity of SVP Communications, we've managed to put together a 'Drives & Media' testing sub-forum.
The new sub-forum is basically a collection of threads where we've burnt + scanned almost every type of disc/dye that we could get our hands on (46 different ones so far).
There is also a nice new guide available that'll tell you how to get the most out of the Queue system. (Thanks Corny ;-) )
ImgBurn v1.1.0.0 Released! Friday 2nd December 2005 Take me to the top, baby!
It has been a while since the initial release, but hopefully you'll see this update has been worth the wait!

Highlights for this release include:

Image Queuing
Verify Mode
Discovery Mode
IBG Files / Write Speed Graphs (in partnership with the excellent DVDInfoPro)

For a full list of all the new features, please take a look at the changelog.

Whilst it appears half the world knew about DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn is still relatively unknown.
If you like what you see, please do recommend it to your friends and family. As it's 100% free, there really is nothing to lose!

Oh and on the subject of testing with more types of media, BIG thanks to SVP Communications for helping to make this release possible.

==================================================

As a side note, and on the subject of Layer Jump Recording, I have 2 drives that seem to support it.

BenQ 1640 and Pioneer 110.

Both are running latest firmware (BSMB and 1.37) but neither of them burn as expected.

The BenQ seems to totally ignore my LBA for 'Shifted Middle Area Start Address' and 'Manual Layer Jump Address' - although the commands I send ARE accepted.

The Pioneer accepts the addresses the BenQ ignores but then errors out as soon as it starts to burn L1 with the error 'Invalid Address For Write'.

I'm sure basic (DAO style) LJR shouldn't be THIS difficult to get working! DVD-R DL media is very expensive and I can't afford to mess around!

As I'm sure you all know, DVD Decrypter was shut down due to legal reasons. Not wanting to waste all my hard work, I'd like to introduce you to ImgBurn! - (Say hello ImgBurn) - "Hello" :o)

ImgBurn is an enhanced version of the 3.5.4.0 burn engine - and it will continue to get better and better as time goes on.

I hope in time you'll grow to like ImgBurn as much as you did DVD Decrypter.
DVD Decrypter Development Ends! Sunday 5th June 2005 Take me to the top, baby!
That's it, no more DVD Decrypter :-(

 » License
First and foremost, ImgBurn is a freeware tool. You cannot bundle it with your own commercial application and you cannot sell it in any way, shape or form.

As an individual, you're allowed to use it anywhere you like - be it at home or at work (assuming they don't mind of course!).

I'm not against it being rolled out in a corporate environment, just make sure the users know they are supposed to contact you with any support type issues and not me - I'm not an extension of your helpdesk!
