(April 22) -- A pilot flying a home-built airplane had to make an emergency landing on a Florida boulevard -- and his on-board video cameras captured it all.
Kyle Davis, 22, the pilot, and his passenger, Joe Surowiec, were headed from Winter Haven to Lakeland, both in Florida, on Sunday for a flying festival, according to Central Florida News 13. But after they got airborne, the engine failed.

"The options for me were land on the road or land on the lake," Davis told the news station.
Davis touched down safely, and the men were able to walk away from the landing.
Davis' flight instructor praised his student.
"Watching that video, he was just awesome," John Amundsen told the news station. "I just hope ... if I ever have a situation like that, I can be as cool as Kyle was."

Wow, such skill. Yeah, b*******t. his passenger gave it away as a hoax when he asked about the filed, twice. And like other poser said, notice how there is absolutely no traffic. Looks to be about noon or maybe 1pm no later than 2pm and no traffic.

Did you notice that there was traffic heading in the opposite direction on the other side of the highway, but the direction they headed on had no traffic? How can you choose to land on a highway as opposed to a field or lake when every highway I drive on has numerous cars travelling on it.

Thankfully, he's a better pilot than a mechanic.

Every fixed-wing aircraft has a "glide ratio." The lighter the aircraft, the longer the glide ratio. However, helicopters DON'T have a glide ratio at all. With them, it's a "fall ratio."

fighter Jets have less wing span, this allows for tighter turns. if the fighter jets wings were longer they would be ripped off during a high G turn. also due to a fighter jet's power plant it is no more than a rocket sled with short wings. if the engine quit it would fall like a rock. Single engine planes do have a glide scope rate of fall far less. hence a glider with long wing span are able to stay aloft longer. So this dude who was landing his plane on the road was staged, the engine was stalled intentionally and only turned on for longer lift when the rate of fall would have put him in a house or tree. notice the engine never spit or coughed.

A 747 has a glide ratio. Fact............The F18 glide ratio is far worse than a small civilian aircraft............so the dicision time available and the available touchdown areas are far fewer. The old F8 fighter had a high station altitude of 8,000 feet over the proposed touchdown point and the manuever required a tight 360 degree turn to touchdownI hope you noticed that the engine was cranked twice to facilitate staying airbourne longer. Kinda odd for a engine that had failed

Cmptrgru34....YOUR A IDIOT....how can you compare a F-18 to a Shitty homebuilt...difference in weight is about 30,000lbs.....and one is made of Metal and the other of Alum....alittle difference in weight....do you actually think if your 747 or 737 had ALL its engines fail you would be able to Glide....think again...IDIOT

Wow, KUDOS for this young man making a safe landing under what would definitely be considered a very stressful circumstance! Being so "cool under pressure" is a great trait to have, and luckily, it served him, his passenger and those living by the road very well!

Plass4010 ....................................Water landings are much harder than you would think. You also have to take into account submerged objects. My grandpa made a water landing in his PB-Y and ripped the bottom of his plane open due to a submerged log. I would personally try to land in the field given the option.
