(April 19) - WASHINGTON - CIA interrogators used the waterboarding technique on Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the admitted planner of the September 11 attacks, 183 times and 83 times on another al Qaeda suspect, The New York Times said on Sunday.

The Times said a 2005 Justice Department memorandum showed that Abu Zubaydah, the first prisoner questioned in the CIA's overseas detention program in August 2002, was waterboarded 83 times, although a former CIA officer had told news media he had been subjected to only 35 seconds underwater before talking.
President Barack Obama has banned the use of waterboarding, overturning a Bush administration policy that it did not constitute torture.

The Justice Department memo said the simulated drowning technique was used on Mohammed 183 times in March 2003. The Times said some copies of the memos appeared to have the number of waterboardings redacted while others did not.
The Senate Intelligence Committee is investigating the CIA interrogation program, which under President George W. Bush also included slamming prisoners into walls, shackling them in uncomfortable positions and depriving them of sleep.
Bush administration officials had claimed such methods were needed to get information but the repeated use of the waterboard on Zubaydah and Mohammed were sure to raise questions about its effectiveness.

MontgomeryJl12403:24 AMApr 21 2009The wierd logic used by those who are pro-torture...the terrorists do so we should act just like the terrorists! Torture has always been around, the Japanese, Chinese, Pol Pot, Burma...but not until Bush/Cheney did we write phoney legal opinions to justify Americans torturing! Guess you all would have been arguing to march the German people into gas chambers...since that is what Hitler did. GET THIS...we are the good guys, no........................................Being good doesn't mean you have to be stupid. War is War! A fight is a fight. There is no such thing as a fair fight or a clean honest war. You use deception, stealth, fire power, intelligence, and every resource at your disposal to win. You being the good guy don't propose to your enemy a clean and honest fight. You don't suggest to him fist only and not bring your gun with you because that will be the last fight you will ever fight you idiot.

RogR1667 03:19 AMApr 21 2009 Torture does NOT work. It has been stated by those that are experts at it.************* How do you become an expert at waterboarding? By waterboarding! If they claim to be experts and fail to reach their goal, well I guess they couldn't be experts after all ? In order to be an expert you have to be profecient at whatever you it is you are an expert. I guess we are pretty good at it! It kept our country safe.

You've never been in a communist reform camp have you? You've never been a captive of the North Vietnamese Communist have you? Why don't you ask them if it works or not? You don't need an expert to tell you if torture works or not. All you have to do is look in the mirror and ask yourself how much pain can you stand before spilling everything?========No, I haven't experienced any of that. But many of the people saying it doesn't work are in that business and would know better than you or I. Even John McCain agreed it doesn't work . Would you say he knows? I , as I'm sure most people who've never experienced anything so horrible, would agree to anything just to get the torture to stop . And THAT is the problem. You could get all sorts of bogus confessions/info. . Even military leaders have stated that.

RogR1667 03:19 AMApr 21 2009 Torture does NOT work. It has been stated by those that are experts at it. And the majority of prisoners that it was used on were found to be innocent. This country is supposed to be about growing and becoming better and being an example to the rest of the world. And that cannot happen when we say to hell with the laws that we create/agree to , just because we're dealing with a group of ruthless murderers. Otherwise, what's the use in having and agreeing to those laws to begin with? We cannot drop all commen sense and logic and behave as the barbarians just because we want revenge.---------------------------------Barbarians do not waterboard, they behead, you imbecile..

MKN84 03:16 AMApr 21 2009 He should have given them the information they wanted, then they wouldn't have had waterboard him so many times. These Muslim extremists are extremely stupid. Dogs are smarter.==================I'm certainly not sticking up for any terrorists in any way shape or form, but I wouldn't say it had anything to do with stupidity. Muslim extremists, as with any religious extremist, will take any torture /punishment, etc., that you can dish out. Because they are not afraid to be tortured or to even die for their cause. It could be argued that the interrogators weren't very bright ,and the tactics not so good, if it took that long and that many times to get anything out of them.

JollyCoolWater 03:14 AMApr 21 2009 TO: Sonja7039...........................It is you who don't get it. I feel like I'm talking to a damn stupid wall. The real issue here is not whether water boarding works or not. It is about these stupid liberals looking out for the best interest, welfare, and rights of these terrorist monsters who kills indiscriminately in the name of Allah. . . . Who knows, you might be one of these virgins.-----------------------------------------------------Ah, I see. Now I do get it. You are completely crazy. Sorry, I didn't know. Have a good day.
