Fix Leaking Faucet

Turn Off Water
Before you start tinkering with your leaky faucet, turn off the main water source. If the leak is from the hot water faucet you may be able to turn off the water at your hot water heater, leaving the cold water to your house on.

Plug Up Drain
Next, plug up the drain using some rags. This will help prevent small parts from falling down the drain.

Removing Handle
the cap of the faucet handle you will find a screw holding the handle to the stem. Turn the screw counterclockwise and remove the faucet handle completely.

Remove Collar
Once the handle is off, remove the collar around the stem.

Remove Stem
Remove the entire stem from the assembly using channel locks or a valve stem wrench. Take the entire stem with you to a plumbing or hardware store to find the exact replacement stem or washer you need.

Reinstall Stem
Put everything back into place. Install your new stem and/or washer. Reinstall the faucet handle and tighten the faucet nut back to its original position.

Check for Leaks
Now it's time to check. Turn on the water supply and check whether the faucet still leaks. Tighten the screws more if necessary.
