"I'm an American but my wife is not. She does not carry hers every day -- neither should you"

My wife used to carry hers in her wallet/purse and then one lost her wallet! Well, a few days went by. We had to cancel all the credit cards right away of course. And she started to go through the process of getting a new driver's license and another green card.

The driver's license? Easy.

The green card? Forget about it. Homeland Security made it clear it would be a royal pain. And no guarantees of even getting another one! They really make it scary.

Luckily, it was found where she apparently lost it -- in a retail store. We got everything back, even the money. And what a relief about the green card!

So only take your green card with you when traveling overseas -- you'll need it to re-enter the U.S.

"Yes, it is the law and my wife carries hers just like she carries her drivers license."

My wife carries her green card in a purse/wallet windowed compartment identical to the one usually used for drivers license. Her model has two so she has her green card opposite to the driver license in such a way that it is possible to show one without showing the other. I have also a co-worker that carries his in a similar comparment in his wallet.

When I lived abroad, I did keep my resident card with me at all times, just in case. Immigration concerns seemed to stressful to take the chance of having a misunderstanding, so it always seemed simple enough and worthwhile enough to just follow the rules. Just like carrying a passport while visiting abroad, I did keep copies in a safe place, again, just in case. I was never actually asked to show my card, so it turns out that I would have been fine not carrying it, but there's no way to know for sure if you will be asked for it.

Don't carry your green card with you -- carry a photo copy. Keep it in a very safe place.
