What would you do if your girlfriend made a sudden confession one night and tells you she had butchered a woman you were having an affair with, sliced up her body and then systematically disposed of her chopped up remains in the trash?
You may contact police immediately, or may cut ties with her and hide, fearing that you will be the next target of her deadly vengeance.

The amorous boyfriend of killer nurse Tomoko Kaneda, however, did none of the above and instead proposed to her - an offer duly accepted by the jail-bound woman, Shukan Shincho (1/2-9) reports.

"The boyfriend made the shocking revelation before the court during Kaneda's trial," a court journalist tells the weekly. "He said he asked Kaneda to marry him three hours after she admitted to the killing of her best friend."

Satisfied with the knowledge that she had achieved her aim of making her man her own by removing rival Yoshiko Nagata, the killer surrendered to the police on July 19, 2001.

The audience at the Saitama District Court was stunned as the boyfriend continued: "I was moved by Kaneda's love, which was deep enough to kill Miss Nagata for me. Proposing to her was my way of rewarding her love.

"My affair with Miss Nagata was the cause of this incident. So I thought it must be easier for Miss Nagata to accept what had happened to her if I marry someone she knew."

Kaneda seemed happier than ever during her trial. "I intend to marry him and live a happy life together so we won't forget about Miss Nagata. It is my way of showing remorse."

The grandfather of 23-year-old Nagata did not hide his frustration when a Shincho reporter interviewed him. "It's bulls**t. How dare they say they want to lead a happy life? There is no way a murderer should be allowed to make a gain from what she had done. She has no rights to enjoy life," he said.

In November, prosecutors demanded the court to jail 25-year-old Kaneda for 18 years. She will be sentenced in February this year.

A legal expert said Kaneda could be out of jail in 10 years time. "A 14-year imprisonment is normal in this case. If she behaves herself in jail she will be granted parole in 10 years."
