Warfare is expected to break out in Great Falls High's gymnasium on Wednesday and school administrators don't mind a bit.
More than 600 students will present projects on war-related activities from the 1300s through the present in the second annual War Fair. Volunteers will judge the projects, and scholarship money is at stake.
"They are working like dogs right now," said Geff Habel, social studies teacher at Great Falls High.
This year's event moved to the fieldhouse because it's been expanded beyond freshman world history students to theater and art students as well. There will be more than 180 presentations, which must include aspects of math, science, technology and of course, history. Students can work in teams and must give oral presentations.
Habel said there will be demonstrations on everything from the V-2 rocket to Japanese comfort women during World War II.
Volunteers from Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, 4-H and the Uptown Optimists will judge.
"How it's going to go, I don't know yet, but I think it's going to be all right," Habel said.
This year, theater students are adding a live "wax museum" aspect to the fair, dressing up and acting like historical figures. Art students are adding an art installation to the presentation as well.
Habel said it's challenging because students have to work in groups and are expected to become highly knowledgeable in their area of interest.
"You've got to become an expert," he said.
This year $5,000 in scholarships will be awarded, but Habel said students won't receive the money until graduation to encourage them to stay in school.
War Fair starts at 10:30 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. The public and parents are invited to attend.
