Yesterday, President Obama announced that he would withdraw combat troops from of Iraq by August 2010. ThinkProgress noted yesterday that several U.S. military service members have embraced the withdrawal timetable. The announcement has also been welcomed by Iraqi leaders, who have favored a U.S. withdrawal for years:
– “We welcome such a decision and support it. … We consider this as a good-faith sign from the American Administration toward Iraq and Iraqis.” — Tahseen al-Shekhli, spokesman for the Iraqi government
– “[Maliki is] very comfortable with the plan. … I think we’re ready to take over the responsibilities from the Americans. Our forces will be up to it, and we are even ready right now.” — Yassen Majeed, adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
– “It is a realistic and responsible plan. It represents a recognition that Iraq must take matters into their own hands and deal with those huge challenges as an independent country.” — Mahdi al Hafez, Minister of Parliament
– “We will be ready to take over when the Americans leave.” — Gen. Abdul Kerim Khalaf, spokesman for the interior ministry and a “key player in the Baghdad security plan.”
A “realistic and responsible plan.”
That has a nice ring to it.
I just hope we can get all of our troops out sooner than later.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:02 pmThese men, officials and generals alike, know the situation on the ground. They live it. I believe them when they say that they are ready, willing, and able to assume control over their government. For all of the right-wing chatter about an invasion of Iraq after we withdraw, remember that many of the extremists were simply protesting our presence in the Middle East.
Let us look ahead to a more tranquil Iraq. While it’s certainly not perfect, we’ve done whatever there is to do. We simply cannot babysit the Iraqis.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:03 pmObama succeeds where Bush never did.
Suck it, trolls.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:05 pmHopefully the rest of the Iraqi people welcome the timetable, too, enough to do what they can to speed us on our way.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:05 pmBut Zooey, remember, Bush never wanted to succeed.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:07 pmI do believe that the Iraqis will embrace this date. It’s still a decent amount of time for us to finish the job throughout the area, and the peaceful elections that the Iraqis have been able to conduct is a joyful testament to our progress. However, they need to learn to assume control over their own government.
And let me say this: never again. This is why Washington warned against foreign entanglements to this extent.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:08 pmOver here a Detroit radio station paid a call to the ambassador of Kenya and confirmed Obama’s birthplace. Is Obama good for the job of President of the USA?
February 28th, 2009 at 10:13 pmJane,
He could have at least pretended…
February 28th, 2009 at 10:14 pmAnd a Kenyan ambassador who didn’t substantiate his claims is a credible source…how? Go back to your cave and learn how to submit something that’s relevant to the topic at hand, troll. I know that it causes you discomfort at night, but Barack Hussein Obama is the POTUS. He meets our Constitutional standards.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:15 pmOh, and this is something the conservatives that side with Berg (who is one of the founders of this “truth” movement, which even Michelle Malkin herself rejects as a fabrication) conveniently dismiss from their minds: he’s a 9/11 conspiracy theorist who is literally the laughingstock of his profession.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:17 pmYeah, I’m going to believe the “ambassador of Kenya” over a valid birth certificate issued by the State of Hawaii.
Knock it off already.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:18 pmCanny55: namecalling is not very nice. You should try and avoid it. The authenticity of the telephone call was confirmed by World Net Daily. He does not seem to meet our Constitutional standards.

February 28th, 2009 at 10:19 pmWorld Net Daily!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!
You are so funny, troll!
February 28th, 2009 at 10:20 pmZooey: Who controls the government of the State of Hawaii? Why are you so trusting of people who are bringing the USA down the dumps?
Listen to the radio call before making a decision.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:22 pmThey simply can’t acknowledge that Mooseburger and McCain lost the election, Zooey. Now they’re raising every irrelevant issue that they can in order to sustain this “constitutional crisis” that simply isn’t so. Barack Obama was issued a passport as a Senator, which requires a national birth certificate for registration. The live birth certificates were not available in Hawaii until twenty years after Obama himself was born there - they were first distributed in 1981, to be precise.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:23 pmRight, Obama controlled the government of Hawaii in 1961. Hell, he has so much power he even controlled it before he was elected to political office.
Stop being such a f ucking sheep.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:24 pmWell you head down to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and knock on the little white booth there next to the black iron fence, and tell the man inside your findings.
Be sure to take the article with you.

Brooklyn,
I listened to the radio broadcast in its entirety, and my inquiry still stands: how do you know the ambassador wasn’t sucking off of Obama’s fame in the area? Where did he substantiate his claims? Head back to World Net Daily and have a collective orgasm over the next bit of information that they uncover about Obama…
Did he forget the mustard on his hot dog last weekend, perhaps?
February 28th, 2009 at 10:25 pmMcCain wants to be a dictator, just like Bush wants. (They are caught saying this on tape.) Don’t think for one second that I’m endorsing McCain over Obama. A better choice is “none of the above”.
February 28th, 2009 at 10:25 pmObama came up with a measured, reasonable withdrawal that won’t turn Baghdad into Saigon circa 1975 come August 2010.
Then again, I’m sure Hannity or Glenn Beck will say we’ll have to nuke Iraq to make sure Babylon will never be rebuilt.

It does NOT substantiate his claims. In fact it does the opposite: it attempts to fool people into thinking they were referring to Obama’s father, and not himself. But any rational person listening/reading the transcript can see what’s going on.
The WND right wing site does NOT substantiate the DJ’s claims. The WND is simply another level of authenticity concerning the actual telephone call.

Really? Obama negotiated the SOFA? Must have missed that act of psychic time travel.
And I know this is going to tee you off, but if Bush had not ordered the Surge, the SOFA wouldn’t have happened and neither would this policy announcement.
I am NOT going to be drawn into defending Bush’s handling of Iraq, but to say “Obama succeeds in Iraq” is just silly. Obama hasn’t had time to do squat in Iraq except hold some meetings, make some speeches and issue some policies. War doesn’t respond to elections. Petraeus plan had the insurgency on the ropes long before the election - and that too helped Obama.
February 28th, 2009 at 11:04 pmHow about giving him credit for passing the stimulus against almost 100% gop opposition, that’s an accomplishment.
How about all of the bad bush policy that Obama has reversed, that’s an accomplishment.
How about uniting the American people in an effort to turn our country around against, well 100% gop opposition? that’s an accomplisment.
Your turn, tell us what the gop has ever done.

February 28th, 2009 at 11:07 pmFred,
February 28th, 2009 at 11:08 pmBut the surge did keep the hurricanes away, YES?
It’s the topic of this thread, Keltoi. Read it. Read the quotes above. Bush would never have succeeded with this, hence my comment. Stop reading your crap into it.
Hey, if we’re going to play the “looking into the past game,” if Bush hadn’t LIED us into war in Iraq, the surge would never have been necessary, the SOFA would never have been necessary, nor would the current agreement be necessary, Iraq wouldn’t be a big problem for this country, and lots of people would be alive who aren’t today.
Stow it, Keltoi.
February 28th, 2009 at 11:10 pmYea but Zooey,
February 28th, 2009 at 11:12 pmThen the hurricanes would attack!
The Iraqis were happy that Obama won, because they knew that if McCain won, he would not honor the “SOFA-like” agreement (which I’m not convinced was entirely legal to begin with. It would mean the Executive Branch had control over the military I thought only the Congress had. I could be wrong, and I’m sure the trolls will say I am. I’d prefer to rely on other sources.)
February 28th, 2009 at 11:12 pmZooey Says:
Stow it, Keltoi.
Pssh! Right.
Okay. Obama succeeds in Iraq in a month. Nothing that happened before Jan. 20 2009 has anything to do with creating the conditions for this policy announcement.
I’ll stow it under “absurd.”

February 28th, 2009 at 11:17 pmHey Max, the surge did keep blackwater in business, in Iraq and in New Orleans……imagine the right calling us names when they actually had mercenaries operating within our borders.

Damn, Wayne, you raise a great point! When Bush was negotiating the SOFA the squealing around TP for the need for Congressional oversight was deafening. And yet…where in the thread or commentary is there any mention of the need for such Congressional oversight now?
(Cupping Ear….)
Nothing! In fact, Reid, Pelosi, Kucinich, they have all been kinda whining about Obama’s announcement about 50,000 residual troops, yet the outcry for holding a vote about this and exercising some good old Checks and Balances has become strangely muted since around…oh…gee, since about Jan 20! And the media isn’t calling for it either!
No wonder Obama could solve Iraq in just a month!
February 28th, 2009 at 11:23 pmYou made the “absurd” statement.
You trying to follow backups path into darkness? Who that reads or keeps themselves informed today would claim that the surge stopped the violence?

Mccain even tried to take credit for the surge and give credit to his surge for the awakening. I wonder if he also wants to take credit for the ethnic cleansing that was a big part of it too……..hard to find someone to fight if they are all dead.

Agreed. And I hope his policies in Iraq turn out just as he hopes. But success in Iraq didn’t start 28 days ago.
February 28th, 2009 at 11:47 pmSuccess in Iraq is getting as many of our troops out safely as soon as possible. Why do people think we need to militarily force our ways on other nations? There were no WMD and there were plenty of voices saying just that. The Iraq war was nothing but a big scam to loot the treasury of the USA. We payed a very dear price for a frenzy of profiteering. The sooner the end the more success anybody can claim.

March 1st, 2009 at 12:48 amLook, this is simple.
President Obama is doing what George W Bush always claimed to be doing. What we always demanded Bush do, but never did.
He’s listening to the commanders on the ground.
And the commanders set this time table as the earliest agreeable date that they felt comfortable with and that’s just all there is to it.
Same with Afghanistan.
He’s not adding troops to step up the war, but step it down.
How you ask? Simple.
The commanders on the ground asked him for more troops to combat the enemy with and less of the Bush regimes plan of unavoidably indiscriminate air strikes.
And the reason they asked him for this was because the air strikes were causing a disproportionate number of civilian casualties in relation to the number of enemy actually being killed. And that in turn creates more terrorists and enemy combatants for them to deal with.
So they asked President Obama for more troops to strike the enemy with so they could reduce the number of air strikes and thus reduce the loss of innocent human life.
When you take away all the right wing hype and diversionary nonsense all you have left is a President doing what we all tasked him to do.
Listening to his commanders on the ground.

March 1st, 2009 at 1:18 amI guess Keltoi is still having a problem with reality.
March 1st, 2009 at 1:24 amWhich is that if El Chimpy hadn’t launched us into a illadvised, crimminal invasion of a country that had NOTHING to do with 9-11, we wouldn’t need to have this converstion now, would we?
Patriot Actor Says:
HA that was a good one. I am still laughing. Billy O’falafel and Glenn the moron? They MAY be the best COMEDY team on TV but for politics I personally prefer, you know, REALITY.

Give it up… if there was anything of question on Obama Hillary would have found it during the primaries.
Anyway, this subject did make it to the SCOTUS thru some guy named Berg and was viewed as worthless, a waste of time and no action was taken.

March 1st, 2009 at 4:35 amGeorge Bush was hoping Iraq would fail forever so his contractor buddies could be in Iraq forever to line their deep pockets with American money! Well, the orgy is over! Ha ha.
March 1st, 2009 at 7:21 amWell, this explains why Americans are still stupid. They’re watching Fox News in droves! See?
March 1st, 2009 at 7:22 amWell, they’ve wanted us out for years now. We could have saved thousands of American and Iraqi lives if we had listened earlier.
March 1st, 2009 at 7:49 amAbout 67% of Americans are opposed to the Iraq War. About 27% are in favor. Before the invasion, I told everyone this would be the result. We have killed over 4200 of our troops, disabled about 300,000, killed over 1.3 million Iraqis, created 5 million refugees, wasted $3 Trillion of taxpayer money, increased our enemies, and made us less safe!
March 1st, 2009 at 9:16 amFor all those people who say the surge worked, I say the jury is still out. Its just like the man who beats his wife. He doesn’t beat his wife anymore as long as the cops are in his house. The question is what does he do when the cops leave? The same can be said about the surge. We will see if it worked when we start leaving.
March 1st, 2009 at 9:38 amMaybe after we leave Iraq the people of the middle east will begin to realize that their real enemy is not the United States, but the common enemy, the Republican Party.
March 1st, 2009 at 9:48 amThe surge did nothing…….see post #60
March 1st, 2009 at 9:59 amThat is my point Fred. For all the wingnuts who claim the surge has worked, we don’t know what the surge has really done. Things seem better as long as we have our boots on the peoples necks. The question is, does Iraq go back to doing what it did before we put all these troops on the streets.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:14 amSure! Tell me another one!
March 1st, 2009 at 10:15 amJohn Kerry Says: Tell you what?
March 1st, 2009 at 10:18 amOk, you mean like:
there are wmd’s and we know where they are?
They will greet us as liberators
the fundamentals of the economy are strong
tax cuts for the rich and deregulation will usher in a new era of prosperity.
how am I doing jk, that better?
March 1st, 2009 at 10:18 amPy no attention to Troll JK, guys. It looks like his meds have stopped working and his Troll Tourette’s (or “Trollette’s Syndrome) has kicked up again.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:22 amThe timeplan is good. For a normal withdrawal under the best of circumstances, you need 10-12 months. 18 seems very reasonable to me.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:24 amHey Ralph, jk likes to think he is the man behind the curtain, somehow privvy to facts that the rest of us seem not to have available to us or we are in denial of their validity.
Truthfully, I think he lives in doonsbury as he appears to be more of a political cartoon depicting the negative aspects of the republican agenda. In other words, la la land.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:25 amNewsweek had an excellent piece about Iraq by Scott Johnson:
Portrait of a Shadow…
http://www.newsweek.com/id/184764/output/print
It is the story of Abu Ahmed…who helped create and equip the Iraqi insurgency. U.S. forces tried for years to kill or capture him. Now he has a different mission: to destroy Al Qaeda in Iraq.
It would be wrong to believe that the Increase in US Troops was solely responsible for turning the Iraq Situation around.
It was a change in STRATEGY, by enlisting the Help of Former Iraqi Insurgents, that eliminated Al Qaeda’s most Important Asset….INVISIBILITY.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:29 amWell there’s this one where this guy walks into a bar…
Hi John Kerry!
March 1st, 2009 at 10:29 amBadger says: I agree, but what worries me is the fact that the central government in Iraq is weak. When we start pulling troops out what are these former insurgents going to do? We have made such a mess of this country that I fear we will see Iraq break apart into many failed states, and then will the pressure be for us to go back in? That is my nightmare.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:36 amYeah, Americans would rather be lied to and told to go shopping and that the the fundamentals of the economy are strong when they are in ashes……that worked so well didn’t it?
March 1st, 2009 at 10:36 amRead the links at 60, obviously you didn’t. there is no one left to fight. They are all dead or gone…..that’s the only thing the surge did, allow the ethnic cleansing to be completed.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:38 amPatriot Actor, that’s an intriguing theory about economic crises. It’s a shame you had to publish it here on a thread about Iraq withdrawal plans, but I suppose mainstream economic journals aren’t very open-minded about new ideas coming from outside their ivory towers, eh?
March 1st, 2009 at 10:39 amHey Freddie baby!
How about some new material? Got any???
Anyone wanna bet that we won’t be out of Iraq in 16 (oh sorry…19!!) months? And, IF the Messiah somehow does this, what do you consider the 50,000 (or a third of what’s there now) soldiers (that you all hate!) doing there still?????? The joke’s on you all especially dealing with the all important Con Man Community Organizer (what the hell is that???)!!
March 1st, 2009 at 10:40 amJK, where’s your doctor’s number? I think I’m just gonna give him a call… just as a precaution.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:41 amHi John Kerry
Can we talk abold abold the excessive use of the bold.
All joking aside, I am curious to know how it became your signature characteristic. Stuff like that interest me…
March 1st, 2009 at 10:46 amAngels81,
I share your worries about the future of Iraq. Iraqi’s have not dealt with the Kurdish sentiments for Autonomy…which could come to a head over the oil rich city of Kirkuk.
Ambasssador Crocker worries that the most significant Event in post Saddam Iraq has yet to happen.
No one can deny that Iran’s influence in the region has Increased.
BUT…as America found out the Hard Way…None of this has anything to do with Al Qaeda’s Attack on Sept. 11.
Iraq may well end end up with an anti-American strong man running things….but I don’t believe Al Qaeda will be allowed any presense or influence in Iraq.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:47 amWell, yeah honey bunch. Your’s seems pretty stale though. How about anything from you execpt bold insults, that would be new.
What would you like to talk about? Tell us why the Iraqi’s are embracing Obama when they had turned their backs on bush and were becoming closer allies with Iran?

What the hell is that? It appears to be the babbling of a nine-year-old. Oh, you weren’t referring to your “comment”?
I realize that reality is to you like sunlight to a vampire, but I’ll take a chance on you bursting into flames:
Draw down next year, and in one more year have all the troops out of Iraq. I have no real problem with that, myself.
March 1st, 2009 at 10:50 amFred, Just because you posted something #60 doesn’t make it true. I wish it was as black and white as you claim, but what is going on in Iraq has a lot more gray to it. Ethnic Cleansing is a huge part that has brought about walled communities. Putting massive firepower in these communities has also had an effect. I ask you, what happens when that massive firepower is removed? Can the central government of Iraq keep the Ethnic Cleansing from starting up again? If the so called surge did anything, it has slowed down the Ethnic Cleansing and that also is a fact. We have made such a mess of this country, that I’m afraid it like trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

lonely?
:)
March 1st, 2009 at 10:57 amI didn’t post it as “truth”, I posted it as an example of what other thinking people believe happened.
I never claimed it was black and white exept for the fact that the surge did not bring peace to Iraq. What happens next is in Obama’s hands and I agree that there are many grey areas. That does not change the fact that the surge did nothing to contribute to the peace that broke out there under the umbrella of the “surge” The surge would have been another Faluja otherwise and would have failed….
March 1st, 2009 at 11:02 amWell, I may be wrong, but irrc, there’s a codicil in the agreement that permits USers to remain if they are ‘invited.’
Nest Paw?
Which proviso leads me to believe there will still bu USer boots (and blood) on the ground in Iraq WELL past 2010, 2015, or 2020.
Cuz there’s always a reason that can be ramped up to stay,m if that’s what’s required.
I recall Nixon got ran and got elected on a platform of ending the Vietnam war.
Which he did.
18 months into his SECOND term, after another 30THOUSAND GIs, and countless South Asians had been exterminated…
Which is just my way of saying: I’ll believe it when it happens…and then only about half way, at that.
And then after Iraq, there’s gonna be big trouble in Afghanistan.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:02 amFred, were in any of my posts did I say the surge brought peace? In post #60 you said the surge did nothing. I’ve shown you were that statement is not true. I don’t think we know what the surge has done, which was the point I was making.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:05 amComment by John Kerry — February 13, 2008 @ 8:24 pm
March 1st, 2009 at 11:06 amActually, it’s the gop that hates the troops. You should be ashamed of your record. It proved that you are un-American. Republicans basically get an F:
republicans do not support the troops, democrats do
They are still there because your messia, bush, got them and us mired down there in an unnessesary and costly blunder.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:09 amFred, you say the surge has done nothing and I say we don’t know what the surge has done. I guess we should just agree to disagree.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:11 amWe can disagree JJ, I respect that.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:17 amMichael Ware:
“…the U.S. subcontracted out an assassination program against al Qaeda way back in early 2006. And this was conceded by the then-chief of military intelligence in Baghdad and by [U.S.] Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad himself. That’s what broke the back of al Qaeda.
Then when America put 100,000-plus insurgents on the U.S. government payroll, including members of al Qaeda, that not only took them out of the field, but it also let them run their own assassination programs against the Iranian-backed militias.
…But the key to the downturn in violence that we’re seeing now is not so much the surge of 30,000 troops in itself.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:18 amWhat it’s been is the segregation of Baghdad into these enclaves. It’s been cutting a deal with Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of the Iranian-backed militia. And primarily it’s been putting your enemy on your payroll — the Sunni insurgents and many members of al Qaeda. That’s what’s brought down the violence. This is your American militia, the counterbalance to the Iranian militias.”

March 1st, 2009 at 11:25 amIn fairness some folks are little travelled. When they do cross Spittle County line and land overseas they tend to stay in compounds which protect them from the local culture. Even Canada scares them. Odd though that they think the packaged luau buffet and flame dancer were so fasicinating when they went on that Hawaian honeymoon at that “resort compound”…
I hate to say this but I am almost feeling sorry for our old simian faced arch-rival Twajie. He has been reduced to being little more than the slow-witted doorman at his anti LGF blog.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:29 amIt now appears to be a front for a fascist neoconservative Zionist Vogon cult. Twajie and the other two stooges, along with Twajies BFF Dr Gaius Baltar were demoted to the rank of troll third class. It’s obvious to anyone with more than a triple digit IQ that they haven’t got any better at trolling since last summer.
Here is the sad part, Eric Oldom has played Twajie like a cheap piano and now has hung him out to dry. We all know how paranoid poor little Twajie is, so it must be hell on earth coping with the fact that he could easily be found.
Hey Twajie, do you have trouble sleeping?

Yes, That is what separates us from them, they haven’t evolved beyond double digits.
March 1st, 2009 at 11:39 am128 John Kerry Says:
I find it interesting that reich-wing Limpublicans have been referring to Obama as the Messiah. I have yet to see anyone from the progressive side use this language. Clearly JK and his ilk use this term in a futile effort to insult progressives that have hope that Obama will be good for America.
I am not going to speak for all progressives, but speaking for myself I am not at all insulted when a wingnut refers to Obama as the messiah. Obama is just like any other politician, and he may or may not end up being a good president, but no rational person would call him the messiah. In fact, it is sacrilegious heresy to do so. Given that the reich-wing is supposed to be the party of the religious right, why are they so quick to use Jesus to slander their opponents? Correct me if I am wrong, but calling Obama the messiah is very much like taking the name of the lord thy god in vain.
Repent JK lest your immortal soul burn in hell for all eternity with the rest of the Limpublican party.
The reality is that the joke is really on you JK. We are happy to have removed Limpublicans from power, and if Obama is not a perfect president, at least he isn’t a Limpublican. We the people cannot trust any Limpublican ever again with political power. We will battle fascist Limpublicanism until it is but a footnote in history and no amount of trolling will change that.

March 1st, 2009 at 1:26 pmIf i remember back to the campaign i remember a debate where barack obama promised to have the troops out by march of 2009. what happened to that promise?
March 1st, 2009 at 1:51 pmthe withdrawl annouced by his administration was set up by the bush administration. he has done nothing but go along with the agreement.

President Obama made an executive decision. He and his advisers have made a slight alteration to the withdrawal. Progressives are willing to compromise and are happy that progress is in fact being made after all these years. We believe that the President is working in the best interest of the country.
March 1st, 2009 at 2:31 pmThere certainly are a lot of experts on Iraq here. I wonder, who here has actually BEEN to Iraq??
And this name calling nonsense really has to go. This is NOT what our country needs, and it makes us look pretty bad. We can disagree and still respect those we disagree with, can’t we? After all, we’re the ones often preaching open-mindedness. Let’s put our money where our mouth is and stop these childish insults.
March 1st, 2009 at 4:44 pmNo one is claiming to be an expert on Iraq, Mike. I would venture to guess that some of the least informed people about Iraq, have been there. The most informed people in Iraq—Iraqis— are seldom heard from in the MSM.
Trolls get what they deserve.
March 1st, 2009 at 8:58 pmThe fact that Obama will leave some 50,000 combat troops (not to be identified in the media as combat troops but with all the duties and rights to fight as combat troops now have) until 12-31-2011….isn’t anyone seeing this as just a contiuation of Bush’s policies?
March 2nd, 2009 at 12:45 amThe fact is the war continues until we “win” which means “pacifying” the Iraqi patriots and nationalists so the wholesale theft of Iraq’s natural resources can continue unabated. The only thing that has changed is that the media have made Americans THINK the war is over and Obama is pulling out our troops.
