--Slam Dunk' manga magazine fouls out over plagiarism claims--
"Slam Dunk" has been, well, slam-dunked, according to Cyzo (January).
One of Japan's most successful manga, basketball-themed "Slam Dunk" ran in Shukan Shonen Jump for seven years from 1990 and sales of its spin-off books have topped over 100 million copies.
Now, however, Takehiko Inoue, the author of "Slam Dunk," is faced with allegations of plagiarism just months after he sent shockwaves through the manga world by making a similar, and successful, accusation against another artist.
Inoue successfully accused Yuki Suetsugu of ripping off his work, which led to a court ruling a few months ago banning all 25 books making up Suetsugu's "Eden no Hana" series and ordering their recall.
Inoue's litigation sent shockwaves through the manga world, but now Inoue is facing accusations that he stole work for "Slam Dunk."
"Some of the cuts of players pictured in 'Slam Dunk' are almost identical to the photos of NBA players in basketball magazines. I wouldn't go so far to say that he's done exactly what Suetsugu did and traced other drawings, but there's no doubt he's at least used the photos as a reference," a comic industry magazine's chief editor tells Cyzo. "Considering we're talking about an artist who's sold over 100 million copies here, the effects of being exposed like that could be pretty far-reaching."
Japanese law has examples of artists who've fallen foul of copyright laws by using others' images as a reference for their own manga.
Shueisha, publisher of the "Slam Dunk" series, refused to answer Cyzo's questions about the case before the magazines hit the presses.
And not helping Inoue's cause is that many have taken delight in the claims and are doing what they can to spread the word.
"Making a bad situation even worse, there's a site from South Korea, a well-known copycat capital, that listed the manga frames from 'Slam Dunk' right beside the photos of NBA players that they are supposed to have been copied from and let the whole world know," a writer specializing in online news tells Cyzo. "This has caused Inoue to lose a whole lot of face." (By Ryann Connell)

Hm. I always assumed they used photos or video for reference anyway. But Suetsugu traced other drawings?? Sheesh, deadlines can make you do crazy things.

.......????????? What does it mean by copycat capital? It's just that I've never known of it and heck I lived there for 10 years once.
Edit:
o(o.O)o
I found the site and it does seem very much like that photographs (although only few) have been translated directly to the manga. But it does seem pretty cruel to say that you plagiarized(sp?) a photograph. I wonder who's going to sue though, NBA photographers?

This is bad, I love InoueŽs work, above all Slam Dunk!
IŽll quote crossbones on this one, "I always assumed they used photos or video for reference".
Why donŽt they go ahead and sue Harold Sakuishi for using allot of references on Beck for instance?
It may not be plagiary but still, references are used in allot of manga and I guess in U.S comics as well.
Manga that reflects on real life must have some kind of real life references, at least that my opinion.

Anyone know where I can download Slam Dunk? I can't seem to find it...

Old dead thread is old and dead.

For a moment I thought this was new... >_> I wouldn't be surprised if something this ridiculous happened nowadays..

Holy crap. A two and a half year old thread(with only a few replies to boot) revival. At least you used the search function. But your topic can definitely have it's own thread since there's no Slam Dunk thread and this one is strictly about the copying controversy.
Anyway, are you looking for the manga or anime? I recently downloaded the fansub because I lost my old version. But it is out there. Found it on a SD fan site.

Looking for the anime Crossbones, all I've found thus far were foreign fansubs, I need them in ENGLISH! *sigh* Best I've seen was French thus far...

I'd actually like to know what happened after those events. Do you know Crossbones? I know Inoue is doing Vagabond now, but was he charged for the plagiarism back then?

I've got them on disc somewhere but they're really bad quality.
if that doesn't bother you I'm happy to upload them if you like *once someone tells me how to*
edit: nevermind just get it off boxtorrents

I kind of want to see those photos, to see how much they really do represent real life NBA players xD
Weird >< I was thinking of Kung Fu Dunk when I started reading.. and I was slightly confused, until I reread it
