What, why, who, when, where and how - Some Highlights and Facts

For the fourth consecutive year, we have gathered statistical and technical
information about aesthetic plastic surgery procedures in different countries.
These numbers are now on our website. In 2000 we received replies from 20
countries, in 2001 from 30, in 2002 from 35 countries and in 2003 from 46
countries. The numbers became more accurate as more members reply to our
questionnaire. We do use a correction factor (multiply the number of answers by
the number of ISAPS members in each country.)

What:
It is with pleasure that we publish for the 4th year the ISAPS International
Statistics for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the only data available from certified
plastic surgeons around the world.
Why:
We want to quantify the world of aesthetic surgery worldwide, to understand the
tendencies on new techniques and technologies and try to learn from these
changes.
Who:
These statistics represent the total number of aesthetic procedures performed by
the 1002 members of International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery � ISAPS.
ISAPS is the first International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, which
gathers plastic surgeons engaged in the active practice of Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery with a special interest in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Only surgeons who are specialists in aesthetic plastic surgery in their own
countries and who belong to their national society of plastic surgery form it.
When:
Members were asked to enter the number of aesthetic procedures (not areas of the
body) performed from January to December 2003.
Where:
Surgeons from 46 different countries have replied to the questionnaire. The
country with more members is the US with 176 members. Some countries have only
one representative.
How:
Members received three monthly email reminders to fill in a questionnaire
available on our website. The research for the first year was done totally by
email. Up until last year, we still sent letters to the members and received
replies via mail or fax. The entry for 2003 finalized at the end of July 2004.
We received 134 replies, 13.4% of the members.
Some Highlights and Facts
Highlights
The first ten countries perform 68% of the total of procedures. The first five
countries are in the American continent: USA, Mexico, Brazil, Canada and
Argentina. They account for 47% of the procedures worldwide. Europe comes next
with Spain, France and Germany totaling 14%. Japan and South Africa follow, with
7% of the procedures.
Sex � Although there are variations from country to country, the world
percentage of patients who seek aesthetic surgery is 88% female and 12% male. It
has been similar for the last three years.
Age � Also different in some countries, but, in general, around 12% of the
patients are younger than 20 years old, 25% are older than 51-years-old and the
majority, 63% are between 21 and 50-years-old. This also has not changed much in
the last three years.
Procedures � Of the first ranked 10 procedures three are non-surgical
(applications), number one, Botox, number five Perlane and number 6, Restylane.
The surgical procedures are, in decreasing order, Blepharoplasty, Breast
Augmentation, Lipoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Breast Reduction, Facelift, and
Abdominoplasty.
Non-surgical
Botox applications have been in first place of surgical and non-surgical
procedures for the last three years. It has grown in popularity from 9.1% in
2001, to 13.1% in 2002 to 14.3% in 2003. What is impressive is that in men,
Botox has more than doubled in two years, from 7.9% in2001 to 16.6% in 2003.
Collagen application has drastically dropped from 13.1% in 2001 to 2.6% in 2003,
maybe because surgeons can now use different options, such as Perlane and
Restylane. These products were added to our questionnaire in 2002, and now hold
fifth and sixth places of all procedures in 2003. Perlane has grown from 2.4% to
6.2% in 2003. Restylane augmented from 3.3% to 5.8% in 2003.
Procedures � Surgical
Lipoplasty, which includes liposuction and liposculpture, the most popular
surgical procedure up until last year, has dropped to third place.
Blepharoplasty (eyelids) and Breast augmentation are first and second.
Approved procedures.
One of the advantages of being an international society is having access to
rules and legislations from different countries, through the members. We
introduced a new section this year on controversial procedures, asking if they
are approved in their country for medical use. According to our members:
Botox is approved in most countries, but Denmark, Great Britain, Greece and
Japan.
Silicone gel-filled implants are still not approved, for every purpose in Japan,
South Korea, Taiwan and the USA.
Soy-oil filled implants have been banned almost everywhere, but in Brazil,
Lebanon, Rumania, South Africa and Turkey.
Internal ultrasound liposuction is not approved only in Japan.
Preferred breast implants
This year we also asked the members to state their preference for the type of
breast implant. Implants with a textured capsule, filled with cohesive gel
silicone is the preference.
