ISAPS Statistics 2004
|
For the fifth consecutive year we produce the ISAPS International Statistics on Aesthetic Surgery procedures.
These numbers relate to the 585,891 aesthetic procedures performed by the
members of the International Society of Plastic Surgery � ISAPS � in 2004. These
statistics do not represent the work of every plastic surgeon in each country
and this is why it is smaller than the numbers presented by National societies
of plastic surgery. For example, in the US there are 6,600 members of ASPS, the
National plastic surgery society, and only 189 are ISAPS members; In Brazil
there are 4,400 members of the SBCP and only 144 are members of ISAPS.
ISAPS members however represent an important part of the plastic surgery
community in every country. They are surgeons with a special interest for
aesthetic surgery and they usually represent an international standard of
education and quality of work. Last year data was collected by email for the
first time. Again this year, between April and June, we sent three emails with
the questionnaires to the 1285 ISAPS members worldwide. We received by the end
of July 2005, 165 answers from 42 countries. Some doctors had difficulty sending
the data by email, so they faxed them to the Webmaster who filled in their forms
for them.
As in previous years we applied a correction factor to the numbers to
statistically represent all the ISAPS members.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The USA continues to be the country with more ISAPS members and more aesthetic procedures performed.
- Mexico continues for the second consecutive year in second place. The recent
trend of Medical Tourism we believe has benefited Mexican surgeons who get more
business, due the good quality of their work and the proximity with the US.
- Brazil has dropped in two years from second to seventh place. This can be due to
the economic changes in the country, with a drop in the income of the
population, now prefering cheaper procedures and doctors who are not members of
ISAPS.
- For the first time we divided the world in five continents, America, Europe,
Africa, Asia and Oceania. America (North, Central and South) is in first place
with 43,92% of the procedures, Europe second with 33,26%, Asia third with
16,54%, Africa fourth with 4,04% and Oceania fifth with 2,23%.
- Usually the international proportion of procedures according to sex has been 90%
female and 10% male, with variations of one or two percent in the last five
years. Last year many articles have been published in the international press
stating that the male population is having more surgery every year. This is not
what the numbers show. There are some countries were the male population is
higher and this can be due to the responses coming from surgeons who perform
hair transplantation, a procedure mainly for the male patient. There has
actually been an increase in the number of women in the US, where more than 94%
of the patients are women.
- Many publications in 2004 devoted pages to the �boom of plastic surgery in
adolescents.� In the last four years we have had only about 12% of the patients
below the age of 20, 60% between 21 and 50 and 28% older than 51. This year we
see that this proportion is stable. The under twenties surgeries proportion is
the smallest in Europe with less than 11%. Almost 70% are performed in patients
between 21 and 50 years old. Europe is the Continent where less people older
than 50 have plastic surgery, only 20%. In Asia 29% of the patients are older
than 50.
- Of all the procedures performed by ISAPS members in 2004, 25% are non-surgical.
Here we include applications, such as Botox, which was again the number 1
procedure last year, and other substances including Restylane, Perlane,
collagen, PMMA and hydrogel. Together with chemical peels these are now very
popular among ISAPS members.
- The most popular surgical procedure for both sexes is blepharoplasty (eyelid
surgery), followed by breast augmentation and lipoplasty. Lipoplasty, which was
for a long time in first place for both sexes, has now dropped to third place.
Rhinoplasty (nose) is fourth. Fat injection, a procedure that a few years ago
many surgeons believed did not work is now in fifth place, double the number
from last year.
- Considering only female patients worldwide we have first breast augmentation,
followed by blepharoplasty and lipoplasty. This shows that the fears about
breast implants have been overcome and the procedure is again very popular. The
most popular procedures for men are rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and lipoplasty.
- The breast implant questionnaire revealed that the preferred implants are
textured capsule and cohesive gel-filled.
- We are releasing a Comparison between the 2002, 2003 and 2004 statistics and the
3 most popular procedures per country.
