Flight Plan Filing Changes for RNAV Arrival/Departure Routes

Effective June 29, 2008 at approximately 0900z, pilots who file an IFR flight plan and are qualified for and want to use RNAV departure or arrival routing, including RNAV SIDs and STARs, must use an ICAO Flight Plan (FAA form 7233-4) and identify their applicable Communication/Navigation/Approach Aid Equipment qualifiers and enter their maximum RNAV capability values in the Other Information NAV/ field. After June 29, 2008 at 0900z, pilots filing a Domestic (NAS) Flight Plan (FAA form 7233-1) will be assigned conventional routing only.

DTC DUAT's ICAO flight plan form has been enhanced to allow it to be used to file domestic IFR flight plans and it supports all required fields needed to obtain the RNAV departure or arrival routing.

What is DUAT?

Not everyone knows what the DUAT acronym stands for. DUAT is the FAA's Direct User Access Terminal (DUAT) service for pilots. This service provides direct access to weather briefing, flight planning, and flight plan filing information to allow pilots to obtain a self briefing and file a flight plan prior to flying. The service is free to qualified pilots, dispatchers, and other authorized users.

Who can use DUAT?

In order to use the DUAT Service, you must have an access code and password. If you possess a Pilot Certificate and current medical or are a student pilot with a current medical and you are in the FAA provided database, you can log onto the our Web Site at www.duat.com, click on register, enter your name and certificate number, then choose a password and access code. Passwords must be 6 A/N characters (e.g. birth date, "flying", aircraft tail number, etc.) and personalized access codes must be 9 or 10 digits (e.g., phone number with area code, social security number, etc.). See below Flight Views Issue 1 for further details. If you have a problem registering, you can contact our 24 hour help desk at (800) 243-3828 and they will be happy to assist you.

FAA Security Bulletin

The U.S. Government continues to receive credible indications that extremist individuals are planning additional terrorist operations against U.S. and Western interests within the U.S. and overseas. Such operations, possibly involving civil and general aviation (GA) aircraft, could be carried out whenever attack preparations are complete and operatives are in place. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has no credible information concerning specific targets, timing, or methods of attack. However, the GA community should observe good physical security for aircraft and facilities and be continuously on the lookout for suspicious persons, activities, and operations around airports.

Terrorists who are no longer able to hijack commercial airliners because of increased security at commercial airports may turn to GA airports and aircraft to conduct operations.

The TSA asks members of the GA community to report all unusual and suspicious activities. If you observe persons, aircraft, and operations that do not fit the customary pattern at your airport, you should immediately advise law enforcement authorities.

Your immediate action is requested for these items:

  • Secure unattended aircraft to prevent unauthorized use.
  • Verify the identification of crew and passengers prior to departure.
  • Verify that baggage and cargo are known to the persons on board.
  • Where identification systems are in place, encourage employees to wear proper identification and challenge persons not wearing proper identification.

Increased vigilance should be directed toward the following:

  • Aircraft with unusual or unauthorized modifications.
  • Persons loitering in the vicinity of aircraft or air operations areas.
  • Persons who appear to be under stress or the control of other persons.
  • Persons whose identification appears altered or inconsistent.
