Japanese gals choosing to make chaste while the sun shines
Just when it seemed "chastity" had disappeared from the Japanese lexicon, the number of women preserving their virginity into their 20s and beyond is rising rapidly, according to Asahi Geino (7/21).

"There's no doubt Japan has more cute girls than before. There's a considerable number of pretty young virgins in their 20s who've recently been coming to see me for help," Japan's foremost sexologist Kim Myung Gan tells Asahi Geino.

"But cute girls have a tendency to develop complexes. The main three things they worry about are small busts, fat legs and body hair. Most guys wouldn't even notice what they're worrying about, but they are plagued by something that somebody may have picked up on before and that's made them close the shutters on men."

A survey by the lowbrow men's weekly revealed that 42 percent of the 100 20- and 30-something virgins polled said they felt some sort of sexual frustration, with 74 percent of the uninitiated saying that they would normally take matters into their own hands -- literally -- when it came to getting rid of any carnal tensions.

Three major factors were attributed as reasons for women remaining chaste well into adulthood.

Topping 70 percent, the vast majority of Japan's 20-something virgins still lived with their parents, often under the watchful eye of a strict, tradition-minded daddy unlikely to look lightly on his daughter's dalliances.

"I live with my parents and have got a curfew," a 20-year-old student tells Asahi Geino. "I've gone close before, but had to stop before going all the way because we were at my home and my parents were around."

Tradition and ignorance also play a part in keeping more Japanese women chaste -- while many want to save their first time for a wedding night, others mistakenly believe that simply having connubials will be enough to get them pregnant -- not as strange as it seems considering the inadequacy of sex education in Japanese schools.

"I simply haven't got the confidence that I'd be able to raise a kid at the moment, so I figure it's better not to run the risk of having one," a 21-year-old woman says.

Then, as sexologist Kim theorized, there are other women who choose chastity simply because they have an inferiority complex about such things as their appearance.

"I haven't got a set of boobs like all the girls in the pin-up magazines and I'd be really ashamed if a guy ever saw me," a 21-year-old woman from a brokerage says.

Other times, the complex may be about a bit more than mere looks.

"I just get the feeling," a 24-year-old virgin working for the government tells Asahi Geino, "that my vaginal odor is just too much." (By Ryann Connell)
