“I did it about two years ago. All my race grid queen and model friends have done it, too,” Miho, a 23-year-old hostess at a posh Ginza club tells Asahi Geino (3/31).
Miho, the men’s weekly notes, is talking about permanent hair removal…from her anus. She’s apparently just one of the growing numbers of young Japanese women who’re tackling their complex over having hairy butts.
“Pubes are a real pain,” Miho says. “On the night before a date with my boyfriend, I have to pluck all the hairs sticking out one by one. I have to screw myself around in all these weird positions to get at them and it hurts my neck and my eyes.”
Hideaki Kawaguchi, a doctor at the HT Shinjuku Clinic, a member of the Nihon Igaku Datsumou-kyoukai or Japan Hair Removal Association, says that women are seeking hair removal treatment not just between their legs, but also all the way to the very back.
“A large number of women feel embarrassed by having a hairy bottom,” Kawaguchi tells Asahi Geino. “I suppose many women are using the backdoor during sex nowadays.”
Prices vary according to the, well, thickness of the jungle, so to speak, but generally somebody looking to permanently rid themselves of unwanted hair will have to foot out about 200,000 yen.
That’s hardly a trifling amount for the average young woman to pay out, which has largely meant the demand is coming from those in higher-paying jobs such as those who use their bodies for show or feel.
“Some women ask us to give them receipts addressed to their companies,” Kawaguchi says. “In those cases, I’ll often have a joke with them, like suggesting that if the company is going to foot the bill, they may as well leave only a heart shape.”
Another physician, who isn’t named, says that there are also women who have had their hair removed only to come back seeking advice when their spouses haven’t liked it.
Kawaguchi has a simple reason for the flair for no hair.
“I’d say the biggest reason behind the huge growth in demand for hair removal,” the doctor tells Asahi Geino, “stems from living in an age where it is acceptable to actively pursue sex.”
