An underhanded undies thief arrested recently stole thousands of women's undergarments and literally lived in an apartment that was wall-to-wall panties, according to Asahi Geino (9/21).

Even police were shocked by what they found in a raid on the home of 46-year-old company employee Kazuo Miyake after they raided his apartment early this month.

"The suspect had filled his home completely with women's panties, even sleeping on top of them. He had these hangers like clothes drying racks that he rigged up so that he could hang underwear all over his walls, too," a police investigation insider tells Asahi Geino.

Miyake lived in a single-room apartment about 18 meters square, with nearly every available space taken up by stolen skids.

"We were carrying out patrols near the home of a woman who had repeatedly fallen victim to a panty thief when along came Miyake. The woman had started hanging her underwear in a place further back on her verandah, it made her garments less susceptible to the attention of passersby. Because of this, Miyake ignored her underpants this time, and instead started snooping around another woman's place. When he tried to take them, we nabbed him," the cop says.

It's not the first time Miyake has been pinched for pilfering panties. He was also arrested a decade ago for the same crime. And the middle-aged man has made no secret of his liking for ladies' lingerie.

"I can't remember exactly when it was, but he turned up one night, laughing and flashing around some panties saying he'd worn by mistake," says the operator of a chicken-on-a-stick restaurant Miyake frequented. "When I looked at the panties, I saw they were pink and silky women's ones. He did the same thing another couple of times."

Maguro Shimonoseki, a writer on things erotic, says Miyake is stuck with his proclivity for panties for perpetuity.

"There are different degrees of fetishism, but fundamentally fetishes can't be 'healed' for life. Whether fetishes lead to crime is matter of how much energy people are willing to expend on them. If somebody has a fetish that's so strong they're willing to risk their social standing and reputable name for it, then it could very well lead them into crime and they could be arrested repeatedly," Shimonoseki says. "(Miyake) looks like he was one of those people."

Friends say the knicker nicker was extraordinarily shy.

"He wasn't the type who was easily able to talk to women," a pal says. "He'd only ever talk to a woman if she'd talked to him first."

Police, however, say he certainly didn't hold back when it came to getting his paws on panties.

"He apparently stole underwear to satisfy an urge inside him," the police investigator tells Asahi Geino. "I think he probably lives in a world of his very own." (By Ryann Connell)
