YouTube Goes Offline

We are always looking for ways to make it easier for you to find, watch, and share videos. Many of you have told us that you wanted to take your favorite videos offline. So we've started working with a few partners who want their videos shared universally and even enjoyed away from an Internet connection.

Many video creators on YouTube want their work to be seen far and wide. They don't mind sharing their work, provided that they get the proper credit. Using Creative Commons licenses, we're giving our partners and community more choices to make that happen. Creative Commons licenses permit people to reuse downloaded content under certain conditions.

We're also testing an option that gives video owners the ability to permit downloading of their videos from YouTube. Partners could choose to offer their video downloads for free or for a small fee paid through Google Checkout. Partners can set prices and decide which license they want to attach to the downloaded video files (for more info on the types of licenses, take a look here).

For example, universities use YouTube to share lectures and research with an ever-expanding audience. In an effort to promote the sharing of information, we are testing free downloads of YouTube videos from Stanford, Duke, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCTV (broadcasting programs from throughout the UC system). YouTube users who are traveling or teachers who want to show these videos in classrooms with limited or no connectivity should find this particularly useful.

A small number of other YouTube partners, including khanacademy, householdhacker and pogobat, are also participating in this test as an additional distribution and revenue-generating tool.

So how do these downloads work? The video watch pages of the participating partners link to the download option below the left-hand corner of the video. To help you keep track of the videos you have previously purchased, we have created a new "My Purchases" tab under "My Videos."

If you are a partner who is interested in participating, you can find out more about the test and enter your information here.

Please do share your feedback with us by joining the discussion here.

Best,
Thai Tran

belthagoros (54 分前)
on a serious note tho, youtube has gone downhill ever since it had new ownership, half the videos have no sound because of this... finding a new, fair file sharing webstie
belthagoros (55 分前)
you can already download videos from YouTube, for free, with many websites and programs, this junk may generate a small amount tho, from the very few who dont...

i think tipjoy is the way to go if we are to encourage micropayments to let the producers decide means we are going to repeat the same old cycle...
Shryk (1時間前)
Umm.. you do know there's a Firefox plugin with which you can already download videos from YouTube in MP4 format? Google is your friend. And to those who whine about paying - it's the DOWNLOAD which is supposed to cost, not the usual streaming.
obzelite (8 時間前)
goodbye youtube, hello metacafe or someone else who is free. suck it up, you paid too much for it and your not going to make it back.
WatchDogxx (13 時間前)
Micro transactions seem to be the way everyone is going, personally i hate the trend, i don't understand why people put up with it.
WatchDogxx (13 時間前)
Why pay to download when i can download it easily without paying anything.

:(
Noliving (16 時間前)
Worthless as there are already software that allows you download streaming media from websites such as youtube and you can get that software for free.
dysthymicdolt (17 時間前)
Paying to download videos? Yeah right. I don't need, or like, anything on Youtube that much--even for a small fee.

I think is very good to share the content of the people to the people, and permit to download help for that purpose, thank you very much Youtube
Xenobli (18 時間前)
Paying for videos that a lot of people get for free anyway (through other means)? No thanks. Pretty pointless.
planasjoan (19 時間前)

I have recently started putting CC bumbers onto my videos - I think it would be nice if YouTube would allow YouTubers the option of choosing CC licenses and having that license information automatically show in the video information, even if they are not subject to fee based downloading. I do this manually, but having it as automatic is a nice way to spread the word on creative commons and raise awareness, and proactive participation. Also, I wish that Google would look at forming tie-ups with sites like Magnatune and Jamendo to encourage artists to use those sites, and to point out that there is plenty of music availbe there under licenses that permit video based derivative works of music on the site. Peace

Great Business model!
HouseholdHacker (22 時間前)
Thanks for letting us into the beta youtube! We are very excited!
LeximoTV (22 時間前)
This is not revolutionary. It will just promote more YouTube scripts.
lowryba (22 時間前)
Very nice. Can't wait till this "beta test" becomes standard.
LoveandEqualityToAll (22 時間前)
yes to Creative Commons licenses.
MichaelAivaliotis (23 時間前)
Why not let all creators allow downloads? Why just partners?
Gordian82 (23 時間前)
No, no, too good to be true ... YouTube ALLOWS DOWNLOAD?! *pinching self* I can already see next month's title: YouTube allows multiple accounts.
manuelhoffmann (23 時間前)
Nais, will there be an overview of all available CC videos? Or another resource for searching CC contents?

Thanks for nothing! Ok, maybe that's a little harsh, but once again, you never cease to un-amaze me with Partner features.
itsjustinleon (1日前)
This is not revolutionary. I had the ability to download youtube videos for YEARS via a greasmonkey extension. I put step by step info about it on my blog that criticizes youtube here http://tubecynic.com/?p=84

What is this? As far as I read, your just talking about what you have done with the videos on youtube and what the people can do with them. One thing though, why would you close down Youtube?! I know, I know. People will be telling me all about this whole thing or what not. I don't now a lot about his, so could you actualy tell us something about that?!
Picuz (1日前)
I think it's not a matter if advanced users can download videos from youtube via a hack/program/app/temp files. The real importance resides in the sole attempt to provide new ways and more tools to share and create new content and share it again. For this I salute the strategy.
abstractyourtv (1日前)
Will you be offering RSS feeds with media enclosures (for podacsting)?
ScenicVideos (1日前)
This is perfect for me! I have all my videos available for download on my website (FREE) for people to use in their own video creations, green screen back drops animation what ever they can come up with. this will save me tons on bandwidth use! google youtube you rock! I am going to sign up now!
myhausmexico (1日前)
Sharing, sharing and more sharing that is what internet is all about. Well done Google.

im loving it!
TackyRackyComixNEO (1日前)
Tons of people already use external sites and the "Temporary Files" folder on their computers to download YT videos for free anyway. Then again, the majority of the YT community prob'ly doesn't know how to, so....yeah.
KatieSmet (1日前)
get firefox add-ons and download utube videos, youtube your so old school, get real
fczuardi (1日前)
Please don't limit this feature to partners and US residents, I am a Brazilian with lots of video content to share and I am waiting for ages for Youtube to give me some Flickr-like license chooser, I want to be able to flag it cc-by or even cc-zero in a standard way that can be recognized by machines and search engines, writing on the video's description or including the text in the video itself is not enough for people like me :) Thanks for the initiative, hope this go into the main product for everyone soon!
trevor813 (1日前)
this dont make since at all...
Ulrich228 (1日前)
Yes, as Blazethe3rd said, it is true It would be a waste adding those functions if there is software out there like Vixy, keepvid and Firefox's DownloadHelper, thet can easily download these videos without paying. Youtube you should do it, because you wont get any purchases. \ PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION.

I found out about this blogpost when http://twitter.com/EFF (EFF's twitter account) reported it.
dracosilv (1日前)
Hey... wait a second... Here's an idea. Make it so that the pay-for-download video is of a higher quality than what you can see online. That would make it more monitarily viable to implement. But still, the Creative Commons license is a *GREAT* idea, since now there are less legal barriers to the mixing of the video content.
Picuz (1日前)
Congratulations!, integrating Creative Common licensing options will no only provide a wider exposure platform to new and independent creators, but it is also a great example to big companies on how the new intellectual property methods, uses and benefits could mean for they´re dying business based on licensing, licenseing, licensing. Contratulations to all the YouTube community!, greetings from Mexico City! Emilio Saldana

this is stupid, there's this thing called "mediaconverter" and "keepvid"

This is huge, wonderful news! And fallofautumndistro: this is also big news for the "average vlog". Alternative licensing is KEY to new distribution models. Control of your videos; thats what its all about.
miltownkid (1日前)
This is awesome. Nice work YouTube dudez. :)
AveryMorrow (1日前)
I hope you will soon allow the average vlogger to make their own videos Creative Commons licensed, for anyone who wants to make an archive!
fallofautumndistro (1日前)
Awesome. Would have no use for the average vlog, but for music videos, short films and other artistic works this will be great.
