我が家の長男とでもいうべきえびす君が目出たく旅立ちました。3人の中・高校生がいらっしゃるとても気持ちのよいご家族と巡り会えて，そのご家族が完全室内飼いという約束でここで２年あまりの修行を経て，立派な長男になられたえびす君が4日程前に引き取られて行きました。 とても嬉しかったのは翌日そのご家族が早速えびす君をグリーンフィールドに連れてくれました。もうすっかりそのこの犬になっていたえびす君がとても幸せそうでしたので，とりあえず安心しています。 もう成犬なのにどこかあどけない表情でとても愛嬌があるえびす君が行った後は一番の遊び相手になっていたちかちゃんがしょぼんとしています。 これで我が家が優しいプリンセスと品格溢れるちかちゃんとの4人家族に戻りました。 Ebisu, our eldest son--if one is permitted to call him that, has left home. We were most fortunate to be introcuded to a charming family with three school-age children who, on the promise that Ebisu be a full part of the family, inside with them most of the time, took him home 4 days ago. What was really lovely was that the very next day they brought him to Greenfield to play with Princess and Chika. Watching him, it was obvious that he was happy in his new home, a huge relief to both of us. Although he is now nearly 3 years old, basically fully grown, his expressions remain those of a puppy, and his closest playmate, Chika, has been in the blues for the last 3 days. So we are back to our old family, the always-sweet Princess and graceful Chika.
先日は学校、地域、スポーツとあらゆる面から芝生の良さを検証し、関係者や専門家の話を中心に芝生化研修会が行われた。学校関係者や行政の担当者が大勢参加して、とても手応えがあり、その結果として今年は数カ所が芝生化されるだろうと思った矢先の今日の電話。 「何々市役所の何々課ですがある保育園の園庭を芝生化しようと思っていますが、まずはとなりの駐車場を芝生化してみて、時々子どもをあそこで遊ばせて、芝生の良さを検証した上、来年は園庭をと園長先生が考えているから、駐車場を芝生化するにはどうしたら良いですか？」という内容にがっくり。 3−4時間かけて我々が頑張った研修会で結局はこの公務員が何も学ばなかったことになります。自分がしっかり研修をし、充分に芝生の良さを理解して、このような理不尽な依頼を園長からもらった時は「園長、当市としては芝生の良さを認めていますので、園庭を芝生にしないなら、貴方の絵保育園はこれからの事業の対象から外す」と言える様にならないと研修会への参加は無意味だった。 At a recent seminar attended by nearly 100 people, four panelists including a school headmaster, a former PTA president, and a grass specialist discussed the benefits of grass from various perspectives. I left with a good feeling, confident that several locations would be converted to grass this year as a direct result. Then the phone rang today. "I am so and so from the XXX department at the YYY City Council and we are considering converting some play school grounds to grass. Initially, the headmaster wants to convert the adjacent carpark to grass and have the children play there occasionally so that he can confirm the benefits of grass. If he is convinced, he will think about converting the play school grounds next year. Can you please give us some advice on how to convert the carpark to grass?" I was gob-smacked. Basically he had learnt nothing from the 3-4 hours hard work of the panelists. Seminars such as this have only done their job when participants are able to respond to ridiculous requests such as this by saying "We as a City Council acknowledge the benefits of grass for children but if you do not wish to convert your grounds to grass, then we will remove your playschool from the list of sites for conversion".
先日はタグラグビーの中国ブロック大会に鳥取代表として出場した我がクラブのジュニアー部がよ線路運度を２勝０敗で突破し、準々決勝で惜しくも２点差で姿を消しました。それは結果だから良いとしておいて、今日はその試合内容の感想を述べます。 他の殆どのチームが単一小学校のチームだけあって、沢山の練習の成果があり、サインプレイを多用し得点を取る、組織デフェンスで相手の得点を塞ぐ、まるっきりイングランド国代表を見ているような錯覚が起きてしまいます。 それと比べて、コーチ曰く我が少年軍団は「さしずめフィジーのラグビーを見ているような感じで、股関節の稼働域が広いダイナミックな走りでグラウンド狭しと走り回っていたので、見ていて小気味よかった」という印象を残した。 まだ小学生や中学生の青少年にコーチが考えて大人顔負けのサインプレイでラグビーをやらせておくのはいかがなものかと思います。その年ではパスを出す、パスを受ける、相手をかわす等など基本技術だけを子どもに教えて、試合では彼らが自由自在の自分たちのしたいラグビーをやってもらった方が楽しいのではないでしょうか。また、そうすることによって、彼らのラグビーに対する情熱の持続に繋がるのではないでしょうか。 Last weekend the KRFC Junior section participated in the Western Japan regional tag rubgy tournament as the Tottori champions. They qualified for the knock-out round by winning their two group matches with ease but lost the quarter-final by two points. That is the result but today I choose to discuss the content of the matches. Most of the other teams represent a single primary school, meaning they have opportunities for plentiful training. Their well-organised set plays and defensive patterns reminded me for one of the England national rugby team. On the contrary, our kids, to borrow the coach’s words, “remind the spectators of the free-running, less-structured Fijian teams, and watching the kids cover the ground with their dynamic strides and totally ad-hoc play was very refreshing.” I have serious doubts with forcing kids to play a series of set patterns designed by an adult and more suited to adult rugby. Surely youngsters would enjoy it more if, having learnt the basic skills including passing a ball, catching a ball, and evading a defender, they were left to their own devices in the match itself. Surely this is how you ensure that their passion for the sport lives on.
金曜日から降っていた雪でグリーンフィールドが完全に雪化粧となり、残念ながら週末のラギグビー練習が中止となったがそれは日本に限った話ではないので別に問題だと思っていないです。 言いたいのは積雪で使えない芝生はどうなるかと良く質問されます。ではお見せします。今日の午後、犬達を散歩に連れて行ったら一部では雪が融けて、芝生が顔を見せていますがご覧の通り全く問題ありません。 実は積雪があると、凍らない、利用されない、水分が沢山あり、かなり芝生にとって好条件ですので雪が融けると凄く元気になるのです。 Our weekend rugby training was cancelled due to the snow that fell from Friday but that is not a situation unique to Japan, so is not a problem. I am frequently asked what happens to grass if there are heavy snow falls. Well, let's see for ourselves. In one section of the ground, the snow had melted when I took the dogs for their walk today. You can see from the second photo that the grass looks fine. What happens is that when there is snow on the ground, the grass does not freeze, it has ample water, and is not used. The conditions are actually pretty beneficial for the grass so when the snow melts, it is really healthy.
今週末は初練習の予定だったが金曜日の夜からの大雪でグリーンフィールドが真っ白になり、練習が中止となりました。 こうなると「僕らの出番」と言わんばかりに大はしゃぎになるのは我が家の愛犬3匹。 Our first training session of the new year was cancelled due to snow but that meant only one thing to our three darling dogs.
去年は予想を遥かに超えるペースで芝生化プロジェクトが飛躍し、嬉しいことにはいろんな方面で芝生化が実施され、数多くの住民が生活の中の一部として芝生の良さを体験出来て、より理解出来る様になりましたが その半面自分自身の血圧が以前も数回書き込みをした様に薬を飲まなければ行けないレベルまで上がって、しつこく下がらない状態になってしまいました。 これは芝生化が広まる過程の中で避けられない通過点だと思い、半ば諦めかけたところ、恒例の週末マッサージを受けているときその先生がおっしゃった言葉でかなり気分が楽になりました。 彼が「今の体から何かとても充実している状態になっているものを感じる］と言った時は、去年までの期間はポット苗を植え付け、肥料を撒き、水をやり、芝刈りを定期的にやってた時期で、今年に入れば芝生が自分の力で自然に広まり、気持ちのよい絨毯に出来上がる様に、この活動に賛同して下さっている沢山の方々のネットワークが機能し始まり、運動そのもの自体が無理なく自然に安定した広まりを見せる段階に入ったような気がしました。 それと、自分自身が今までの様に気を張って頑張るのではなくて、自然体で行く年になるのではという気持ちになりました。 Our grass project expanded at a pace far surpassing expectations last year, at once a very pleasing development as many school fields and parks were converted to grass and hundreds or perhaps thousands of residents experienced at first-hand the enjoyment of having grass as an integral part of their living environment, greatly improving their understanding of grass but at the same time leading to my blood pressure rising to levels requiring daily medicine (something I have referred to in the past) and stubbornly remaining at those levels. I had almost accepted the high blood pressure as an unavoidable price to pay to ensure the success of the project but while having my regular weekend massage this evening, the masseur said something that made me feel a lot better. "For the first time, your body is emitting a sense of fulfillment". When I heard these words, I realised that the period up to the end of 2008 had been a time of planting seedlings, watering them, fertilising them, then regularly cutting the grass as it spread, while this year was the start of a period in which the grass grows under its own strength until it becomes a soft and pleasant carpet. By this I mean the widening network of people supporting and assisting with the project as it spreads at a natural pace throughout Japan. No longer do I have to exert excessive effort to drive the project forward. Rather, I can relax and go with the flow.
田舎生活が11年目に入り、20数年生活していた都会では一回も感じたことのない地域社会の一員になっている気持ちが毎年強くなって来ていることが実感して来ます。 それまでは自分中心に生きて、自分中心に活動し、周辺の方々と殆ど接点がないと言うか関わりを持たなかった自分ですが、今はしっかりとこの社会に解け込み、ここの方々と交流し、活動を共にしている自分に驚いている今日この頃です。 ふとした遊び心でグリーンフィールドを作り始めて早７年目に入ろうとしていますが多方面の沢山の方々にお世話になり、今は全国での知り合いや友人に囲まれている生活がとても心地よく、やっと一人前になったような気がします。 振り返って、今まではどうしてこれが出来なかったのかを自分に問いつめると返って来る答えが「昔は酒を飲んでだろう｣と。 そうです。2009年は僕の断酒生活が6年目に突入します。「酒飲まなくてもこんなに充実している人生が可能だと分かっていたら」と思わないです。良くも悪くも今までの経験があっての今の自分ですから、後悔はないです。 ただ、昔の酒飲んでいる時の自分よりは酒を飲まない今の自分の方がとても大好きです。 飲まないで、この大好きな自分とこれからずっと付き合いたいです。 そして、飲まない主人として今まで一緒にいてくれるのが奇跡としか思えない最愛の妻とずっと幸せを感じながら生きていたいです。 As I enter the 11th year of my life out of the fast lane, I notice more strongly every year a feeling that I never experienced in my 20+ years living in big cities, a feeling that I am an integral part of the local community. Before coming here, my life was very selfish, I did what I wanted to with almost no contact with the people living around me. I am constantly surprised to notice that here I have become part of the community, I have daily contact with many people, and share many activities with them. It is now nearly seven years since I started to build Greenfield, on nothing more than a whim, and now find myself constantly being helped not only by many local residents but also by a wide-ranging circle of friends and acquaintances spread nationwide. This life feels good, so good that I finally feel that I am becoming a normal human being. On reflection, the answer to my question as to why I was never able to achieve this state previously is that I was drinking then. Yes, I am now entering my 6th year of sobriety. I do not wish that I had only known earlier just how fulfilling life can be without alcohol. My life is my life, and I am the sum of all my past experiences--good and bad--and I have no regrets. What I do have is a strong awareness that I like the me who doesn't drink more than I like the me who used to drink. I want to spend as long a life as possible with the me I like. I also want to spend a long and happy life as a sober husband with my beloved wife, a fabulous woman who miraculously is still with me. ｜一覧｜ |
