Japananese porn starlets’ inspiring new careers
By Masuo Kamiyama
Yuri Komuro
From 1996 to 1999, Yuri Komuro was one of the brightest stars in the adult video firmament. Now 30, the petite (157cm) performer, with inspiring vital statistics (88-60-87cm) has gone on to a second career as an author.
“When I look back at my acting days, it was lots of fun,” she recalls to Asahi Geino. “Just by following somebody’s instructions to disrobe I could make millions, or even tens of millions of yen. I think back on the opportunity with a sense of gratitude.”
And how did she put her earnings to use, the magazine asks.
“I blew my money in all kinds of spectacular ways,” Komuro giggles. “What was left, I used to buy a car and personal computer. If I had saved the income from just three films, things wouldn’t be so tight now. Life is hard for AV actresses once they retire.”
Komuro, fortunately, always enjoyed writing, and is realizing an increasingly large percentage of her income from her efforts.

Initially her acting colleague Luna Hoshizaki had turned to writing and provided Komuro with introductions. In addition to pieces serialized in magazines, she also does interviews with women who work in the sex trade, as well as providing advice to people with sex problems.
“Most of what I do has some sort of connection with eroticism,” she tells the magazine. “I’ve always had a strong sexual awareness, even as a kid. When I was in kindergarten, I invited a neighbor’s son to fondle my breasts. And I once, before I knew better, told a university student in the neighborhood to “give me a blow job [sic]” and he licked me down there. Today, that would be treated as a crime.”
Now age 30 and retired from film making, Ms. Komuro nonetheless says she desires sex more than ever.
“I’m finally at the stage where I can really enjoy sex,” she confesses. “I never had an orgasm during a film shooting. Except when somebody worked on me with a vibrator.”
Well-endowed, leggy Ruka Aida was famous for intense sex scenes and gained a reputation for insisting her male counterparts never use condoms. After a stint working as a masseuse-cum-hooker in a Yoshiwara “soapland,” in June 2004 she opened her own bar, called “Ruka,” in Tokyo’s Roppongi district.
The choice of profession should not be too surprising: Ms. Aida had always had a liking for strong drink, and during her acting days would often sip sake at “host clubs,” where she dropped as much as 3 million yen in the course of a single evening.
“When I was working as a masseuse, I’d go from Japanese rice wine to champagne to shochu and then brandy. Couldn’t remember a thing the next morning, but then I’d look at the bar tab — woo! I had no sense of how to hang on to money.”
“I never liked the feeling of condoms,” Aida, now 37, tells Asahi Geino, recalling her AV career. “Even when performers were required to use them due to concerns over AIDS, I’d refuse. Same goes for my private life. But these days, I haven’t been doing much sex, maybe only once a week,” she confides. “I guess I blew off most of my steam when I was young. These days when my boyfriend asks me for sex, I just give him a hand job.”
Among the other “retired” AV performers Asahi Geino tracked down for this story were Nao Saejima (now 37 and working as an artist); Sally Yoshino (27, a striptease dancer); Misato Sugihara (a pro wrestling “diva”); and the busty (90cm) Hitomi Hasegawa, star of the 2001 production “Shojogu” (virgins’ palace), but now a self-described “erotic missionary” who plans and appears in “sexy events.”
