17:30 ~ the main event - World Cosplay Summit 2005!
The moment everyone was waiting for had arrived. A video of all the preliminary competitions around the world ran on the big screen and the MCs for the evening took to the stage. Toru Furuya of Mobile Suit Gundam fame was wearing the uniform of Amuro from the same anime. TV personality Tomoe Shinohara wore a cute and colorful outfit and conducting the event with these 2 well known characters was TV Aichi's own announcer, Mika Nakayama.

Part 1: Individual Competition
Now to the contest!
The 5 judges for the evening were: 1) one of the master artists of the Manga world, Mr. Reiji Matsumoto 2) renowned for his singing of anime music, the gPrince of Anison-kaih, Hironobu Kageyama 3) known for being one of the pioneers of cosplay, Ms. Ban Ippongi 4) Mr. Shin Nagai from Nagoya Mode-gakuen 5) animation producer from TV Aichi, Akeshi Takayanagi.
The 10 individual representative cosplayers from 7 countries were dressed up in the costumes of their favorite anime and manga characters. Karaoke was the theme of the contest and while the competition was intense, all entries put on an incredible performance.

Individual Contestants:
Spain: Carla Casteles Salom
Costume: Yukari Hayasaka from Paradise Kiss
Carla is a huge fan of the popular musical group, LfArc en Ciel (a.k.a. Laruku). This is one of the reasons that she chose to sing their hit song gBlurry Eyesh.

China: Kira
Costume: Shura no Asuka from Samurai Spirits
Kira was the lone male contestant in the individual program. His selection was the theme song from Gandam Seed gInvokeh. His rendition in Mandarin provided a unique flavor to his performance.

Western Japan: Sou
Costume: Lenne/Ren from Final Fantasy X-2
The first Japanese contestant of the evening! Sou from Western Japan wore the costume of the diva Ren (a.k.a. Lenne) and gave a heart felt rendition of the Final Fantasy X-2 theme song g1000 no Kotobah (1000 words). The passion Sou put into her performance effectively conveyed the character she was trying to personify.

United States: Deandra Ervin
Costume: Miyako from Kanrazuki no Miko
As those who were at the event know Deandra not only speaks Japanese well but her singing was also incredible! Those present were captivated in her performance.

Eastern Japan: Haruka
Costume: Sailor Moon from Sailor Moon Super
Haruka perfectly embodied her character. She performed in the costume that was so effective for her in the preliminary round.

Germany: Anja Burghardt
Costume: Crimson Girl from Demonbane
Beautiful! The lightness of her costume suited her perfectly.

Japan, Web Based: Yuna
Costume: Yuna Akashi from Mahou Sensei Negima
Yuna's really drew the audience into her karaoke performance. Her stage presence was top rank.

Italy: Georgia Vecchini
Costume: Sirene from the movie - Devil Man
As soon as Georgia entered the stage a din rose from the audience. Her combination of costume and karaoke performance was a sight to see.

Central Japan: Saira

Saira sang the official theme song for the Aichi Expo gI'll Be Your Loveh in English. Her selection was true to the roots of the regional entry.

France: Dounia Fergane

Dounia stated clearly that her reason for taking part in the preliminary competitions was to make it to Japan. Well, she did it, and her performance of gCutie Honeyh in beautiful Japanese got her very positive feedback.

1st Intermission: Live performance by Uchusentai NOIZ
Among the special guests for the evening was the music group Uchusentai NOIZ. They put on an unforgettable show and as an aside, their costumes were also supposedly hand made! Keep your eye on this band in the future.

Group Competition
In the Individual Competition, karaoke was the theme, however for the Group Competition a 3 minute performance was asked of each entry. With skits, sword battles and singing, it was really an ganything goesh competition. The gCosplay Performanceh is a facet of cosplay that has not yet caught on in Japan. As one would expect, these 10 teams that made it through their respective preliminary competitions around the world put on a series of unforgettable performances.

Group Contestants:

Spain:
Gisela Chillon Perez,
David Lopez Fernandez,
Jorge Luna Perez

Costumes: Fullmetal Alchemist.
This group is both close friends through cosplay and the music they play together. They played gReady, Steady, Goh, the opening song for Fullmetal Alchemist, while a video that they had created ran in the background. It was an impressive performance and the audience responded with calls of gKakoii!h (Cool) and applause.

China:
Xiao Mei, Bei Yu, Gu Feng
Costume: Samurai Spirits
In China the concepts of gCosplayh and gPerformanceh are said to be inseparable. The group from China really did an amazing job demonstrating this. In particular Xiao Meifs spins and moves truly looked as if she were dancing across the stage.

Western Japan:
Miyapin, Namari, Ayumi
Costumes: Gunbuster 2 (Aim for the Top / Top wo nerae! 2)
With talking, singing, and a variety of surprise props, the group from Western Japan had a strong presence in front of the crowd. With the costumes they wore and the atmosphere they created, it was almost as if the real Nono, Raruku and Chiko were actually up on stage.

United States:
Elizabeth Munden, Laura Ann Chase, Lynleigh Benton
Costumes: RosenMaiden
Befitting a nation where the art of live performance is so developed, the US teamfs presentation and acoustic effects were flawless. Having revealed a performance different from the one they did at the preliminary competition means that they had less than a month of preparation time. Impressive work!

Eastern Japan:
Takumi, Shion
Costume: Inuyasha
Among all of the group entries, Eastern Japan was the only team with 2 members. They gave such an impressive performance that people did not notice the difference in number of performers.

Germany:
Anne Rose, Stephanie Kienast, Young-ji Kwon
Costume: Magic Knights Rayearth
With their own original choreography, the German group sang Yuzurenai Negai (Unyielding Wish). The unique way that they used their capes in their synchronized moves was impressive. Even their breathing was in synchronicity!

Japan, Web Based:
Barbie Tsukino, Kaie Tada, Writer Shitara
Costume: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon
This highly qualified performing team with an impressive web presence is know for competing abroad and has even won competitions in the United States. Being long time fans of Sailor Moon and appearing in the costumes is one thing, however their piece de resistance at WCS2005 was their hand made golden orca. (A regional symbol which adorns the peaks of Nagoya castle)

Italy:
Francesca Dani, Emilia Fata Livia, Elena Fata Livia
Costume: Soul Caliber II
The 3 sirens presented a vivid and technical battle scene that transfixed audience and judges alike. Without words or song their compelling act wascamazing.

Central Japan:
Nakamura-han (Lord, Lady, Youth, Puchi Youth).
Costume: Lupin the Third
The representatives from Central Japan were participating as a family. As at the Central Japan preliminary competition they impressed the audience with a lip sync performance of their lovable gLupin Danceh. Seeing parents and children thoroughly enjoying cosplay together left a lasting impression.

France:
Wendy Roeltogen, Pauline Mesa, Laurence Guermond
Costume: Tokyo Mew Mew
The lyrics gChu! Natsu party!h went well with the cute choreography of the French group. The song was a perfect selection for the summer event. Their collaboration was so genuine it was almost as if they were an idol group performing on stage. The attention to detail with the costumes also received high marks.

2nd Intermission:
Theme Song for Neon Genesis Evangelion sung in 7 languages
During the second intermission, special guest Mr. Toru Tanabe took the evening to a dynamic point with a moving rendition of the ending theme song for Neon Genesis Evangelion sung in 7 languages. Tanabe-san is a popular baritone opera singer in Germany. What's more, when the movie gLast Samuraih was playing throughout Europe Tanabe-san was starring actor Ken Watanabefs voice in German! Tanabe-san has been a leading figure in raising the image of Manga in Germany through his release of the popular animation music CD in German gAnime Songbook "Rakuraku" vol.1h.
It was through Toru Tanabe-san collaboration efforts that the singing of the ending theme song for Neon Genesis Evangelion in so many languages was indeed possible. The moment brought home the rising interest that Japanese Anime and Manga is achieving around the world today.
