Boom or bust: Breast milk ballyhooed to beat the bulge

Bra-ce yourself for this - breast milk could be the wonder drug to combat the obesity plague and, unlike other dieting snake oils, scientific data seems to suggest that this is no booby trap, claims Asahi Geino (4/19).

Key to the assertion is a substance called lactoferrin, a protein found in copious amounts in breast milk and a substance believed to cut visceral fat levels by as much as 40 percent.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare estimates one in every two middle-aged Japanese men, that is around 20 million guys, either have, or are on the verge of being afflicted by, metabolic syndrome - a combination of disorders that makes people more susceptible to heart disease and diabetes.

But last month, scientists at Lion Corp. found lactoferrin can drastically cut the visceral fats that are the major cause of metabolic syndrome and what make obesity such a killer.

"We conducted tests on 12 men from 35 to 60, giving them a 300 milligram lactoferrin tablet daily for two months. We discovered during a CT scan that they had an average loss of 22 percent of visceral fat and their waistlines shrank an average of 4 percent. In one case, one of the subjects showed a loss of 40 percent of visceral fat," a spokesman for Lion Corp. tells Asahi Geino.

Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine Prof. Hoyoku Nishino, who served as an adviser to the team doing the research, said the findings were unexpected.

"(Lactoferrin) is a protein found in bodily fluids. It's in tears, uterine discharges and even mucus, but the largest amounts are found in breast milk, especially new breast milk (produced one to three days from childbirth). It's been known across the world for a long time that lactoferrin has anti-bacteria effects that protect bacteria free newborns and also provide immunity. Our study was looking into whether the immunity breast milk provided could be used to prevent the outbreak of cancer. We were studying the matter for 13 years," the doctor tells Asahi Geino before going on to explain how the team found out lactoferrin helps fatties as much as babies. "We had absolutely no idea we were going to discover that lactoferrin has such an effect in reducing visceral fat. We started looking into whether lactoferrin could be used to fight gum disease. Tests began on company employees and we noticed one of the fatter ones started losing weight. The research team thought there may have been something else in the lactoferrin and began studying it further, taking about three years of research to collate data. The result was that we kept getting more and more data showing lactoferrin drastically reduced visceral fats."

Lion plans to commercialize its discovery, hoping that using the breast milk substance to prevent people from getting fat will fatten its bank accounts. Economist Takuro Morinaga predicts lactoferrin could produce a boom from the bust.

"The U.S. diet market is said to be worth around 4.8 trillion yen, but Japan is only about one-third of that at around 1.6 trillion yen. But if lactoferrin is as good as it seems, Japan's share of the U.S. market will grow to about half. In the world of economics, there is an old saying that the easy way to riches is to develop a medicine to end baldness or one to eliminate fat," Morinaga tells Asahi Geino. "Up until now there have only been minor successes in both fields and no really major developments. There is a market in developed countries throughout the world. This could be huge!" I suspect that with more and more research being done on breastmilk, more and more benefits will be found.

Would you (any bfing mother) give your breastmilk to your DH or other obese family member? Would you donate your BM to science for further research?

and for the FF'ers on the board: if you were obese and your health at risk, would you accept this substance from human breastmilk?

I would consider it if it was really proven to be helpful and effective. But I'll say the same thing here that I said over there...

where will they get all this breastmilk from if it catches on...and i think there are babies who deserve it first...before most cases of obesity.

i highly doubt my DH would ever take something like that :P he isnt obese though.

i too wonder where they will get it if it catches one.

Oh I totally agree!

And since I tend to have an oversupply, would it work if I drank it myself?!!!

i forgot the FF question.

No i probrably wouldnt take it i would rather exercise and diet like i did to lose my baby weight.I wonder if you take the pill then stop..would the weight come back?

Also...theres the problem of people thinking this is a miracle pill and then they take it and dont exercise and continue eating however they want.

Very interesting.

I've read some preliminary research that injesting breastmilk also helps to cure cancer. It really is wonderful stuff.

If I have an oversupply, I'd love to donate bm.

I think it's grea, and I think it's wonderful to donate BM, especially for research reasons.

The more that's found about BM, the more Formula can be improved, which emans that although it will always be a second best choice, it will be better than it is now!

BM does cure loads of minor ailments, I cured pink eye with just a few squirts, as well as an ear infection!! So I believe it may well have more and more abilities.

I think it's really interesting. I for one would donate any over supply I may have for research or to anyone who may want it. It would benefit me  the longer I'm pumping/breastfeeding the longer I don't have to worry about weight. I have more of a problem keeping weight on while breastfeeding than anything

I think it would bug me to see all this breast milk donated for research...a diet pill of all things... when its so hard to get mothers to donate breastmilk for actual babies.

ditto...i think if women really started donated BM for babies then the price would go down as well..maybe?Id much rather them donate the food for babies rather then middle aged men who can go out an exercise but dont

Eh....I'm not in favor of this. As Peggy said- unless the price of BM for CHILDREN who desperately need were to come down, I don't think it should be used for adults to lose weight. Lay off the cupcakes and get off their @sses first.

Well....that's not exactly how I see it. Visceral fat aka fat around the stomach is a serious problem. Having fat around the stomach is one of the leading factors in type 2 diabetes. There are also many other reasons why fat, and visceral fat specifically, is dangerous.

Visceral fat can also be one of the hardest types of fat to loose. Some people diet and exercise faithfully and still have a little bit of spare tire or love handles. It is very stubborn.

So in that context, I can completely see the value in this.

And ditto what Charlene said. The more we know about bm, the better we can make formula.

Lactoferrin is also found in cow's milk. I cannot find a peer-reviewed journal where this data was published, and this makes me leary of their conclusions. However, it sounds like the subjects in this study were given lactoferrin tablets (which any of us could buy at a health-food store tomorrow, I believe). They weren't given breastmilk, or even tablets derived of breastmilk.

I really can't imagine a researcher would suggest that we should "harvest" this from donated human milk. Calcium is good for us, too - why would we make calcium supplements out of human milk, when there are many other sources for it that are a lot cheaper? The researchers (corporate researhers) are simply establishing a link between something that is already known to be good (breastmilk) and something they likely want to make money off (lactoferrin).

Re: the original question - Yes, I would and have donated small quantities of milk for research. I didn't have enough extra to donate through a milk bank (I believe it's 100 oz minimum?). The study I participated in was looking for contaminants in breastmilk and only required a total of about 5oz, and that was over several months. Any studies that can 1) improve the quality of breastmilk we, as mothers, can make for our children, and 2) improve the quality of breastmilk substitutes for infants who aren't able to nurse, is worth 5 oz of my milk. I also wouldn't be opposed to donating for other well-constructed research projects.

According to the article...they are hoping to make a trendy diet pill because of the money :) Its nice to think of all the great medical uses that could possibly come out of it...but if people want to do the research where the money is...how can you stop them?

The research will go to diet pills..at least according to the article...and MOST people want diet pills simply so they dont' ahve to diet the right way.

We have a lot of TV commericals around here about milk helping with weight loss. Their catch phrase is "milk your diet".

If they found that specifically BM helped with diabetes or something like that, I would support it being used.
