Inverness Caledonian Thistle have named Terry Butcher as their new boss and Maurice Malpas as his assistant.
The pair have signed 18-month contracts with the Scottish Premier League's bottom club.
"There's a huge challenge here, and we're looking forward to it not only this season but next term as well - hopefully in the SPL," said Butcher.
"I think there's a great spirit here and it's going to be 15 cup finals for us until the end of the season."
Despite the new full-time post at the Tulloch Stadium, Butcher will also continue to assist to Scotland boss George Burley with the national team.
However, he will cease to work in his capacity as a media pundit.
Scotland colleague Burley was among the first to offer his congratulations on the appointment.
"I'm delighted for Terry. It's a great opportunity for him to get back into club management," he said.
"He's a great football man and I know he's excited about the prospect of tackling day-to-day management again.
"His new role won't affect his position with the national side.
"We are both absolutely committed to Scotland and taking the country to the World Cup finals next year."
Butcher, who won 77 caps for England and captained them to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990, took over at Motherwell in 2002.
The former England captain has also managed Coventry, Sunderland, Motherwell, Sydney FC and Brentford.
He forged a good partnership with assistant Malpas in his four years at Fir Park, with Malpas succeeding him as manager when Butcher left for Sydney FC.
However, the 50-year-old lasted less than a year in that job and his seven-month spell at Brentford ended in December 2007 after a run of five consecutive defeats and 520 minutes without scoring a goal.
Malpas also had an unsuccessful spell in the English lower divisions, managing Swindon for a spell in 2008.
Butcher's predecessor Craig Brewster was sacked following seven consecutive defeats, leaving the club at the bottom of the league.
Experienced coach Archie Knox, most recently assistant at Blackburn, had been tipped as an early favourite for the job after he was interviewed first on Friday.
Former Caley Thistle manager John Robertson and Chris Sutton, the recently-retired former Celtic and Aston Villa striker, were also interviewed by the Highland outfit.
Argentine World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles and former Scotland defender Willie Donachie - whose last managerial job ended when he was sacked by Millwall in October 2007 - had also expressed an interest in a move to the Highlands.
