About Our Speaker
This time we are honoured to have as our speaker H.I.H. the Crown Prince, who has graciously consented to speak to us on "Water Transportation in Edo", in a PowerPoint presentation. The meeting will be held in the theatre of the Canadian Embassy, thanks to the kindness of the Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Jonathan T. Fried, who will also host a reception after the meeting. As in previous years, the meeting will also be graced by the presence of our honorary patron, H.I.H. Princess Takamado.
This meeting is for members only, and members were already asked earlier to make reservations for this event, which they will have done before they receive this. As this will be the Annual General Meeting, we will begin with a short business meeting at 6:30, allowing time for it to be concluded before the lecture meeting, which will begin at 7:00 with His Highness's arrival. Her Highness Princess Takamado, as our patron, also wishes to attend the business meeting, so, in order for everything to run smoothly, we ask everyone to arrive in time to be seated by 6:15 (having first allowed themselves enough time to check in and receive their copies of Vol. 22 of the Transactions, which will be available for full members (that is, those paying full membership fees) to pick up. Unfortunately, those who come late cannot be admitted.
Abstract
This will be the second time that His Highness has spoken to us. The last occasion was in January 1992, our 120th anniversary year, when he spoke to us on "Water Transportation in the Seto Inland Sea." For that event the British Ambassador, H.E. Sir John Whitehead, kindly hosted us at his residence, and the meeting was also graced by the presence of T.I. H. Prince and Princess Takamado, at that time not yet our joint honorary patrons. His Highness the Crown Prince has made a serious study of water transportation in historical times. During his time at Oxford University (1983-1985), he studied the history of transport on the River Thames, and later wrote a book about his experiences in England, "Thames to tomo ni," which was published by his alma mater, Gakushuin University. This was later translated by Sir Hugh Cortazzi and published by Global Oriental for the Japan Society in 2006 under the title "The Thames and I". In this book Sir Hugh very ably conveys His Highness's warm personality, which all who know him can vouch for.
Coming Meetings
The meeting on February 23rd will be a joint meeting with the College Women's Association of Japan (CWAJ). The speaker will be Mr. Alex Kerr, author of Of Dogs and Demons.
