Dublin prices gap biggest for hair
Thursday, 8 January 2009 13:01The Central Statistics Office's regular comparison of prices in Dublin with those outside the capital has shown that meat prices are generally higher in Dublin, but petrol prices are generally comparable.
The CSO said it looked at 79 items in November last year. Average prices were higher in Dublin for 51 of these and lower for 26. Two were the same.
The biggest differences were in hairdressing, as a wash, cut and blow dry for men cost, on average, 50% more in Dublin. For Dublin women, the price was 25% higher. The price of rashers was 37% higher in Dublin, while a pint of lager cost 12.5% more in the capital.
But some food items were cheaper in Dublin. The price of flour was 16% lower, while a fillet of ham cost 14.3% less in the capital. Steak prices were just under 10% cheaper, while bread was 7.5% lower.
Separate CSO figures show that production in the country's manufacturing industries rose by 2.7% in November compared to the same time in 2007.
The most significant annual changes were seen in the medical, precision and optical instruments sector where manufacturing rose by 19.9%. Reproduction of record media rose by 9.2%, while radio, television and communication apparatus slumped by 21.3%.
The CSO says that the modern sector - which is made up of high-technology and chemical sectors - showed an annual rise in production of 3.9% while the traditional sector saw 0.7%.
