View Full Version : Otaku are paedophiles in disguise?

Self-professed 'real otaku' rips into 'moe' fetish fakers
One of Japan's most prominent woman manga artists has lashed out at the country's burgeoning otaku culture, saying that those now proudly boasting of being geeks are little more than pedophiles, perverts and losers, according to Shukan Bunshun (5/18).
Mimei Sakamoto, a multitalented manga artist whose "Nippon no Mimei" is a must-read for all hip young Japanese, rips into the otaku, whose geek culture has moved into the mainstream courtesy of the business of "moe," a word that literally translates as "gushing" and describes the warm feeling the otaku get when they see something they like.
"Perhaps it's because 'Train Man' (the story of an otaku who wins the heart of a pretty woman) was such a hit, but recently I've seen all these dorky guys walking around in thick glasses and checkered shirts and it pains my heart to think that they may be hoping to meet some pretty girl who's going to fall in love with them. Sorry guys, the chances of that happening are zero," Sakamoto tells Shukan Bunshun.
Sakamoto goes on to lambaste the otaku tendencies to idolize young girls and women wearing spectacles.
"This fetish you call 'moe' is a pedophiliac fetish and is nothing more than perversion. It's not really something you should be gushing over," the manga artist says, addressing the otaku. "In other countries, they'd call what you're fantasizing over 'child pornography' and you'd all be arrested. I'm ashamed that these 'otaku' who are perpetual criminals have entered the mainstream and started an otaku boom."
Sakamoto continues, saying that those now regarded as otaku really aren't geeks at all.
"All the world is going around talking about maid cafes and stuff and making these so-called otaku look good. But people must realize that these guys are simply men incapable of recognizing reality and are incapable of being in a normal loving relationship. I can't stop crying over the fact that these people have been labeled as otaku and that we are now going through an otaku boom," she tells Shukan Bunshun.
The manga artist also points out that sharp marketers are also suckering the ersatz otaku.
"There's a tendency in the otaku market to avoid producing contents that are going to sell in terms of millions or tens of millions. Instead, they find a semi-hit then bring out figurines, DVD box sets, premium editions and all sorts of related materials that are drastically over-wrapped and sell to the same people who bought the original product in the first place," the manga artist says. "So-called otaku are caught up in this money making cycle and all they're doing is spending their hard-earned yen (which often comes from their parents in a lot of cases). And, what's really sad, is that loads of these gullible suckers don't even realize that they're being taken for a ride."
Sakamoto claims to have street credibility.
"I'm a fully-fledged otaku. I used to shut myself away from the world. A real otaku would never go out and about in the world because they wouldn't believe anything good could happen to them if they did so, anyway. They all believe the world is out to get them," Sakamoto tells Shukan Bunshun. "Real otaku should go back and shut yourselves off from the world again. The true value of being a real otaku lay in the belief that nobody else understands you."
In other words.... otaku are idolized nerds(?) who are nothing more than mainstream paedophiles(?)
I don't think I like that definition :box:

She has a point about certain things (like about the marketing and so on), but then again, she said all true Otaku should lock themselves away from the world and basically shun human contact unless that person is another otaku, which is not normal either.
Otaku are really scary people

hmmm...someone just had a message on here about "moe" being something else, but must have realized their error, and deleted it. For everyone else though, in this quote by the woman, she is referring to this moe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_%28slang%29
As you can see here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe , M.O.E. (Master of entertainment) is also on the list, but not what she was talking about.

I think the manga artist was talking about Japanese otaku....the real kind....not American "otaku."
I know that there are female otaku in Japan, but they don't make a whole lot of underaged male heart-throb characters. Most of the male characters are more in the "tall pretty man" category anyway. It's the female anime characters who are nearly always big-breasted teenaged nymphs in schoolgirl uniforms. ...in this way, I can see where that manga artist is talking about.

Here's another bit of news for ya.... pretty sick though
Just plain disturbing: Japan's newest batch of idols on the wrong side of 10
Japan is sick. Not satisfied with a booming market in the borderline pedophile Under-15 pin-up princess business, now there's 9-year-old cheesecake going mainstream, according to Shukan Post (5/19).
Japan's market for pubescent pin-up queens has already proved to be lucrative, with thousands of perverted consumers forking out their hard-earned yen for a DVD filled with images of a scantily-clad 11-year-old called Saaya, who is billed as a "kyonyu," or "buxom" idol.
Saaya has also joined forces with California-born 12-year-old Jessica and another 12-year-old called Shizuka Umemoto to form a group called Sweet Kiss, which has Japan's nerdish otaku drooling lecherously at the various signings and "handshake events" they attend, the men's weekly says.
Now, however, Japan is stooping even lower with the emergence of 9-year-old Mizuki Yoshii, who has become the face of Japan's vile but burgeoning Under-10 idol business.
Born on May 15, 1996, Mizuki still hasn't reached double figures. But her sales figures are already impressive. Her photo collection went on sale in March, with the initial print run set at 6,000 copies. It has already gone into a second printing and topped 10,000 copies, the standard for a best seller in Japan. What's more, hits on her talent agency's website have skyrocketed since the 9-year-old appeared on the scene.
Mizuki's photo collection is little more than pedophilia. She appears clad in all sorts of garments, the vast majority of them scanty, and the shots cater to the traditional sick tastes of perverts, with the little girl decked out in her school uniform, PE bloomers and swimsuit -- all staples for child cheesecake fans in Japan.
Producers of the pre-pubescent pseudo-porn argue that there's nothing wrong with it.
"We did the shoot over 3 1/2 days in Okinawa in November last year. She doesn't need any make-up, so the shoot went really smoothly," an insider involved in the production of the photo collection tells Shukan Post. "We weren't trying to make her look sexy. We just wanted to display her in all the cuteness that's associated with somebody her age."
Nonetheless, Mizuki is made to strike pseudo-erotic poses, such as seductively licking an ice cream, that the men's weekly says are titillating.
And unfortunately, it seems the Under-10 market is viewed as something of potentially stable one.
"At the moment, Japan's pin-up market is polarized, with Aki Hoshino, at 28, representing the oldest segment of the market and the Under-15s at the other end," Masahiro Kitagawa, a self-professed "idol spotter," tells Shukan Post. "The weakening of Japanese men means guys now place a lot of importance on imagining they have control over the opposite sex, which has sparked the emergence of the Under-15 market. The way they've got the girls changing costumes all the time is supposed to be a way to satisfy guys' various fantasies. The polarization of the market is likely to continue, but I don't think it will go any lower than the Under-10s." (By Ryann Connell)

If u think about it hard enough... it is much smarter doing that than working, paying bills and buying anime/manga paraphanalia
At home - they pay no bills if they don't want to. Hell.. they probably don't even have to clean up most of the time
No Job - equals you get money from someone else. Meaning you don't spend your own money... but someone elses. And since you're asking most likely parents... there will most likely be and endless supply - especially from mom if your a boy
We are the stupid ones spending money on this stuff when we have better stuff we can be doing with our money since we actually have a life

What is an Otaku? After what i heart it is some kind of fan of..something..?
So there are pervs who get a hard one by starring at 15 year old teenagers or even younger "pin-up" girls....but why to these girls "model" in the first way? It is not like Thailand where children get sucked into things like this because of the need of money.

Well in my opinion there are levels of Otaku. Three of them:
Level 1: Fan-Otaku.
This type of Otaku simply likes anime, manga, that genre of games and movies. Watches/Reads a quite a few of each, outbalancing other forms of entertainment, but not by much. This otaku is hardly noticeable and usually look like any scrawny kid or what not that may look like a modern school geek in America. This type is perfectly fine. Stays in check with reality. Recovery chances: Over 80%.
Level 2: Obsessed-Otaku
Mid-range Otaku. This is the anime group, he ignores most of his peers except for those that seen up to the latest episode of [Anime name] as soon as it comes out. Watches anime all the time and seen mostly everything. Jacks off to hentai (Sick bastards, I never did get the point of making cartoon porn....why? dear god why?!). Collector of some anime/manga objects. Social level falls into limited time. Day dreams about being an anime hero/villain or some RP in an anime. Chances of recovery: 50% (depending on age).
Level 3: Darth Otaku.
Stereotyping at its worst. A fat grown man, thick glasses, and other retro physical appearances. Completely lucks himself (no 'her', I doubt women can reach this level) in his room and watches anime around the clock. Hardly/Doesn't work, when does immediately wastes all money on collectables such as DVDs, Models, games (all limited editions), posters, cosplay, life size models, Manga (every issue). Has an immense collection of everything that has to do with anime/manga and very rare models, cards, special editions of DVDs and what not. Most likely has Lolita (is that how you spell it?) fetish. Shuns reality as he assumes he is misunderstood and falls into his fantasy world of screwing [insert anime chick]. Knows every single anime, better than Anime News Network or something similar. Complete stereotype of an American nerd/geek/spaz. Recovery chances: None.
:bored: How bored can I get to write that?
So Anime is evil? It brainwashes people to...OMG BLEACH IS ON! (lol).

I wouldn't say it's evil, it's just that many hardcore otakus just take their damn hobby too far.
Otaku doesn't just mean anime or idol fanatic (The idol fanatics are usually called wota by the way.), there are also Computer Otaku, Game Otaku, Sport Otaku, Car Otaku, Outpost Nine Otaku, etc. It's just someone who really likes their hobby.

If you've ever been to a morning musume fan board you'll see lots of the pedo type otaku. It scares me that they've got every CD, photobook, and picture of these girls... when they're older than I am by a few years and they're looking at the really young ones... and they talk like they actually know the girls.
I'm an otaku in the more "traditional" sense... that is, I never go out anymore. But that's more because I hate people and that fact that gas is expensive than anything.

This "some guy" was actually around the same age as Reina but the way he talked about her and being with her was a bit...:boggled: I can't imagine what he would say if he saw this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4o8EIWRQzU)
I like Eri Kamei, but in a "Say, this girl is pretty cool and funny!" way instead of a "I LOVE HER WITH ALL MY HEART! ONE DAY YOU WILL SEE US TOGETHER!!! *orders a ticket for Japan**" way. Of course I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't consider hooking up with her if I had a chance. But If I don't, unlike the rest of the wotas it wouldn't be the end of the world for me. *remembers the Mari Yaguchi incident last year *:eyepop: *
I don't consider myself as an Otaku because I have a life outside my home, nor am I obessed with Momusu.

I guess, seeing all this and the other otaku thread, I'm an average kinda guy, or the way I'd like to say it... The Evolved Geek.
I used to be this nuts for anime, but I guess that kinda died out when I started hanging out. Most of the girls I knew that were also otaku tried to "save me", but I guess it didn't work out in the end.

Otaku might just mean fan in America, but in Japan it still has a decidedly unheathy undertone. Like not just fan.
Here's the analogy as I see it.
Fan is to Otaku as Boyfriend is to Psycho Stalker
They've got words for "fan" and "afficionado" and so forth in Japanese. Otaku is where it crosses over into an unhealthy obsession.

My fiance and I have decided that 90% of Japanese men are pedophiles, and he argues that Japanophiles are pedophiles too. :watson:
The kiddie porn (whether or not they'll admit thats what it is or not) disturbs me so much, but to ad to that- even the women are expected to look and act like children (or act dumb, in other words). It drives me crazy to see a full grown woman being admired for acting like she's a 10 year old- and shunned for acting her age.
Not that America seems to much better actually- here they want women to look like women, but act like morons. :bored:

The women in said article is basically saying that the word 'otaku' in Japan, which previously had quite negative connotations, is becoming more like the word 'otaku' in anime communities in that some people wear it as a badge of pride as far as being socially inept is concerned.

I hate those girl in Japan, the ones that act like their innocent adolescent girls. With that artificially high voice too... ugh. I don't find it cute at all.
I hate ditzy girls in America too, they aren't any better. Well, actually, hitting up a ditzy girl at least doesn't make me feel like I'm trying to get with a 12 year old.

scroll down to the bottom. man...i swear if i ever have a daughter in japan......i dunno....
I'd be one of those crazy motherfucker Americans running around the studio with this (http://www.barrettrifles.com/rifles/rifles_99.htm) gun and taking people out. I would be just a tad upset if that was my kid.
Oh my god, that gun is so sweet, i want one.
You could call me otaku, i watch anime, read manga, don't play games(old pc and i don't like japanese games, because i mostly play rts), but i find it strange, how some internatioal organization didn't done anything about this whats happening in japan, if this stuff been done in some other countries, usa, europe etc. you would go to jail and for a long time and think its right.
How i know otakus in japan were people (mostly man) who didn't fit in the japanese strict society and shut them up in this anime world, because they could fit in real, but now it become big biznes and companies try to profit from it, also i find that media holds a lot responsability for that whats goin on, if media shows only underage girls its obvious that man will like them, media forms the standarts now.
sorry for bad english.

not in england its not... as most ppl don't know what it is...hell...most ppl can't even pronounce the word properly....
i'm not an otaku anymore...i can't afford to be one
"Otaku" here is a word used to call those anime maniatic lovers...i like to call them "anime nerds" because they don't talk about anything else than "OOOOHHH MEEENN!!!! did you see the last ep of Naruto and stuff?!?!?!"....and nothing else exists for them than anime series...the word is applied mainly to some young boys and girls who like japanese animated series with school bags full of badges....but also to some older guys, and i mean older....
But, as i am into the illustratration world, sometimes i saw maniac 35 and 40 y/o old and fat guys (hey! they look older i mean it!) who are real otakus who ask me to draw their creature "of their dreams" naked (yes hentai, i don't do that stuff anymore) obviously they paid me a good money ....and it's creepy,
i specially remember, at some anime convention (i was part of the staff and in charge of the video game tournament), one guy(he was probably 30-35 y/o) and ask me to draw the girl from that karekano (naked) anime and when i finished the sketch, he started to cry,, and started to comment all the life of that char, how old it was, and he knew even its bday and gave me a speech like a speech president about the fuckn char, damn! and me playing mr nice guy "o...k.....su..re..." and thanked me and...argh! dare to say, gave me a powerful hug....and open a folder into his school bag (full of badges) and got it into with a thousand other hentai illustrations....that was the sickiest thing....
frankly, i was into anime ONCE in my life, the truth is, it helped me a lot because it gave me inspiration and references to become what i am today, an almost profesional illustrator, thanks of anime ( part of) was a good influence in my case....but i never was an otaku....for sure....i could never been an otaku....it's kinda sad obsession....

I don't see otakus as creepy so much as I see them as sad. It's unfortunate that they can't have found something they loved that involves being social, and helps them contribute to society--as opposed to shutting themselves up in their rooms, and masturbating to old episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Funny that American English is supposedly closer to what English actually used to sound like than what it does now in Britain or Australia (or other commonwealth countries). And if you really want to return to spelling 'correctly' why don't you just go back to Chaucer... 'Whan that Aprille with his shoure soute...'

Here's a question. Comparatively, the time between Chaucer and Shakespeare is tiny, yet the language in them is dramatically different - what brought about this dramatic restructuring of the language in such a relatively short time?

Anger at the continent and the new interest in theatre. Maybe it more Marlowe than Shakespeare, where the change is evident.
