24 Dec 2008 (The Herald-Harare) President Mugabe has gazetted the official list of 2009 public holidays in Zimbabwe.  16 May 2008 (Associated Press) Earlier today, the Zimbabwe electoral commission announced that a run-off election between Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai will be held on Friday, June 27, 2008. As is usually the case, we expect the government to declare that date as a one-off public holiday.  18 Mar 2008 (IOL + AFP) President Mugabe has declared Saturday, March 29, 2008, a public holiday to enable workers to vote in the presidential, parliamentary and local government elections. Banks and businesses, normally open on Saturdays, will be closed on that day, while most retailers may remain open.  12 Aug 2007 (BusinessWeek) The government has lifted price controls on beer, to ensure that supplies are not disrupted during next week's 2 consecutive public holidays.  07 Aug 2007 (The Herald) The Minister of Home Affairs announced the list of public holidays for next year in terms of the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act, but he stressed that the list did not include any days which the President may declare to be additional public holidays.  06 Mar 2002 (Pan-African News Agency-PANA) Yesterday, Zimbabwe's President, Robert Mugabe, announced that he would declare Saturday, March 9, 2002, as a one-off public holiday to allow people to vote in this weekend's presidential election.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Zimbabwe public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.

Background Information

Weekend Public Holidays: It would appear as if public holidays that fall on a Sunday are moved to the next Monday. This conclusion was made after reviewing the dates from previous years. No official source has been found to confirm or repudiate this assertion.  Many companies close for one to two weeks over the Christmas/New Year period.  National Unity Day is a public holiday gazetted through Statutory Instrument 156 of 1997 to mark the signing of the Unity Accord between the country's two revolutionary parties, Zanu-PF and PF Zapu, on December 22, 1987, in Harare.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).

Observance : Any entry in the Observance column indicates that, in Zimbabwe, the holiday may be regional or non-official or limited to certain religious and/or linguistic groups, or begin at a time other than midnight. Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions.
